Why do we share?

                   • The Web is the natural place to publish
                            information for public dissemination
                   • Transforming how we organize ourselves &
how we’ll address the world’s most
pressing problems in the 21st Century

make a life by what we give.”

Sharing worldwide

We are sharing documents and data worldwide, routinely
         with people we don’t know.

We’ll hear a lot during this conference about why
         governments share and the benefits.

If achieved, it will transform how governments serve their
         citizens in the 21st Century.

• Linked Data is
           about publishing
           and consuming
           data using
           international data
           standards
       • Based on 20 year
           old idea
       • A system of linked
           information systems

IN 3 BRIEF YEARS ...

Starting in 2008, a few heads of state directed open
government data to be published on the Web ...

Last month (September 2011), Presidents Obama
(USA) and Rousseff (Brazil) endorsed the Open
Government Partnership, along with 7 other nations

Each launched their government’s National Plans
during the meeting of the UN General Assembly

WHAT HAS A STANDARD
                       EVER DONE FOR ME?
Web standards are the reason ....

The World Wide Web in less than 20 years became
the most extensible, robust information network
                    ever created

That a data sharing revolution is even possible

We can share open documents and open dataWeb
                    standards are the reason ....

Consider the alternative ... Closed. This possibility is
