Public-Private Roundtables at the Fourth Clean Energy MinisterialValerie Riedel
This report summarizes the key outcomes of the six industry-government discussions held as part of the fourth Clean Energy Ministerial, in 2014. Energetics supported our client (The U.S. Department of Energy) in preparing this report, providing substantive editing, graphic design, photo selection, and content planning assistance.
In order to foster a grass-root bottoms-up approach to innovation and development and to arrive at solutions for local problems, which are sustainable and scalable, there is a need for seeking out and campaigning for ideas that have the potential to solve challenges. Accordingly, based on the innovative ideas received from the local people regarding developmental projects, a ‘One MP – One Idea’ Competition may be held in each Lok Sabha constituency annually to select the three best innovations for cash awards and certificate of appreciation for next five best innovations.
The National Innovation Council (NInC), Government of India has launched a Global Innovation Roundtable (GIR) as a policy dialogue to outline a new paradigm of inclusive innovation.

Increasing Cluster Performance by Combining rCUDA with Slurminside-BigData.com
Federico Silla from the Technical University of Valencia presented this deck at the Switzerland HPC Conference.
"Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) are currently used in data centers to reduce the execution time of compute-intensive applications. However, the use of GPUs presents several side ef- fects, such as increased acquisition costs as well as larger space requirements. Furthermore, GPUs require a non-negligible amount of energy even while idle. Additionally, GPU utilization is usually low for most applications. The use of virtual GPUs may address these concerns. In this regard, the remote GPU virtualization mechanism could be leveraged to share the GPUs present in the computing facility among the nodes of the cluster. This would increase overall GPU utilization, thus reducing the negative impact of the increased costs mentioned before. Reducing the amount of GPUs installed in the cluster could also be possible. In this talk
we present the remote GPU virtualization mechanism using as case study the performance attained by a cluster using the rCUDA middleware and a modified version of the Slurm sched- uler, which is able to map remote virtual GPUs to jobs. By leveraging rCUDA+Slurm, cluster throughput, measured as jobs completed per time unit, is doubled at the same time that total energy consumption is reduced up to 40%. GPU utilization is also increased."

NAEE is Nigeria’s Largest International Forum on Renewable Energy & the Environment.
NAEE™ is forging new partnerships. It’s where leaders come to devise winning strategies to conserve precious resources, save money, and meet people that can help them be more profitable, more efficient, and protect the planet while doing so. NAEE 2015 is where it all happens. Where it’s always happened, every year since 2011.
It is 20 years since China opened its doors to the
West. Now a new era is beginning for trade in
China as it becomes a member of the World Trade
Organisation.
What have we learnt to date from transferring
technologies to China, particularly those designed
to protect the environment? How do vendors of
environmental technologies access this opening
market?
While recently working in Asia, some things were
clearly evident. It takes money, time, persistence
and careful planning to achieve widespread adoption
of a new environmental technology in China.
Firms that succeed in China:
• get advice from others who have been successful;
• collaborate with the Chinese on research;
• collaborate with other foreign companies in business
activities;
• form joint ventures with Chinese companies, but
recognise that partnerships work well too;
• provide a comprehensive package where and
when it is needed;
• protect their intellectual property (but are also
prepared for some ‘technology leakage’);
• establish a local presence;
• respect cultural differences; and
• access the resources of governments in Australia
and China.

Observability Concepts EVERY Developer Should Know -- DeveloperWeek Europe.pdfPaige Cruz
Monitoring and observability aren’t traditionally found in software curriculums and many of us cobble this knowledge together from whatever vendor or ecosystem we were first introduced to and whatever is a part of your current company’s observability stack.
While the dev and ops silo continues to crumble….many organizations still relegate monitoring & observability as the purview of ops, infra and SRE teams. This is a mistake - achieving a highly observable system requires collaboration up and down the stack.
I, a former op, would like to extend an invitation to all application developers to join the observability party will share these foundational concepts to build on:
Removing Uninteresting Bytes in Software FuzzingAftab Hussain
Imagine a world where software fuzzing, the process of mutating bytes in test seeds to uncover hidden and erroneous program behaviors, becomes faster and more effective. A lot depends on the initial seeds, which can significantly dictate the trajectory of a fuzzing campaign, particularly in terms of how long it takes to uncover interesting behaviour in your code. We introduce DIAR, a technique designed to speedup fuzzing campaigns by pinpointing and eliminating those uninteresting bytes in the seeds. Picture this: instead of wasting valuable resources on meaningless mutations in large, bloated seeds, DIAR removes the unnecessary bytes, streamlining the entire process.
In this work, we equipped AFL, a popular fuzzer, with DIAR and examined two critical Linux libraries -- Libxml's xmllint, a tool for parsing xml documents, and Binutil's readelf, an essential debugging and security analysis command-line tool used to display detailed information about ELF (Executable and Linkable Format). Our preliminary results show that AFL+DIAR does not only discover new paths more quickly but also achieves higher coverage overall. This work thus showcases how starting with lean and optimized seeds can lead to faster, more comprehensive fuzzing campaigns -- and DIAR helps you find such seeds.

Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).

My slides at Nordic Testing Days 6.6.2024
Climate impact / sustainability of software testing discussed on the talk. ICT and testing must carry their part of global responsibility to help with the climat warming. We can minimize the carbon footprint but we can also have a carbon handprint, a positive impact on the climate. Quality characteristics can be added with sustainability, and then measured continuously. Test environments can be used less, and in smaller scale and on demand. Test techniques can be used in optimizing or minimizing number of tests. Test automation can be used to speed up testing.

6. JUCCCE China Energy Forum 2011
“Innovative Technologies for China’s Circular Economy”
Chengdu, November 19-20
Terms to Know
The Circular Economy
A Circular Economy is a general term used in China for an industrial economy that allows for economic
growth while protecting valuable resources and the environment. By working together, industries and
services can enable one facility’s waste to be another’s input. The Circular Economy brings manufacturers,
green cities, ecological industrial parks, governments, infrastructures, manufacturers, and consumers
together to optimize the use of resources, have cleaner production and maintain an industrial ecology.
The JUCCCE China Energy Forum will introduce innovative technologies and partnerships that can further
develop the Circular Economy in China.
The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT)
MIIT was formed in 2008. It superseded the National Development and Reform Commission, the
Commission of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defense (except nuclear power
management), the State Council Informatization Office, the State Tobacco Monopoly Bureau and the
Ministry of Information Industry.
MIIT’s responsibilities that relate to energy include: forming and organizing the implementation of policies
devoted to promoting energy saving; the comprehensive use of resources and clean production in the
communications and other industries; helping draft plans which promote the comprehensive use of
resources and clean production; organizing and coordinating the major demonstration projects; and
promoting the use of new products, technologies, equipment and material.
The Ministry of Environmental Protection (MEP)
MEP is responsible for carrying out environmental science and technology work, organizing key scientific
research projects and technological demonstration in the field of environmental protection, facilitating the
development of environment science and technology administration system, and international cooperation
and exchanges on environmental protection.
Joint US-China Collaboration on Clean Energy (JUCCCE)
A non-profit organization changing the way China creates and uses energy through cross-sector and cross-
border collaboration on sustainability solutions. JUCCCE accelerates the greening of China by catalyzing
systemic change in key drivers of energy use such as urbanization, industry and consumer behavior. During
its first four years, JUCCCE has already helped catalyze key tipping points in China that will lead to
reductions in energy use and emissions nationwide: Smart Grid, sustainable cities, and consumer media
green coverage.
For information on attending the Forum, email events@juccce.org or see www.juccce.com/forum
7. JUCCCE China Energy Forum 2011
“Innovative Technologies for China’s Circular Economy”
Chengdu, November 19-20
China Energy Conservation and Environmental Protection Group (CECEP)
CECEP is the only state-owned enterprise specializing in energy conservation, emission reduction, and
environmental protection. It focuses on sustainable cities, sustainable industry, cleantech and new energy
projects. CECEP has 172 subsidiaries and over 30,000 employees. Overseas, CECEP has established
offices in over 20 countries to oversee engineering projects in over 60 countries.
CECEP is a think tank, a solution provider for government departments and large-scale industrial
enterprises, and a technical consultant. As the consultative institute designated by the State Owned
Assets Supervision and Administration Commission of the State Council (SASAC), CECEP manages the
“pilot training program for energy managers of central enterprises.” CECEP constructs advanced energy
efficient buildings and low-carbon industrial parks across China.
City of Chengdu
Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan province, is the focal city for China's "Go West" development program
and a top investor in the clean energy industry. It is one of the core political, economic, and cultural cities
in Southwest China. With a population of 11 million people and in 2010, a nominal GDP of over USD82
billion, it is attracting many institutions and enterprises from both mainland China and abroad to set up
their headquarters or representatives offices there. On the first annual the Low Carbon China Forum in
2010, Chengdu was honored with the titles “Contributing City to Low Carbon China” and the “Most
Competitive Low-Carbon Industrial Base City” for 2009.
Chengdu’s industrial zones include the Chengdu Economic and Technical Development Zone, the
