PERUVIANS HAVE MUCH to celebrate in regards to the rapid progress the country has made in reducing malnutrition. In 2013, only 3.5 percent of children under five years of age in Peru were underweight. Even smaller proportions— 0.5 percent and 0.1 percent—were moderately or severely wasted. But the statistic that many nutritionists point to when lauding the country as a nutrition success is Peru’s rate of childhood stunting (Figure 14.1). In 2014, 14.6 percent of children under five years of age were stunted. While this rate is not as low as the country’s other nutrition indicators, it reflects a remarkable improvement. Less than a decade earlier, the prevalence was twice as high (29.5 percent).4 How was this rapid progress achieved—not only at a national level, but across all of Peru’s diverse regions, even poor rural ones including the Andean Highlands, and even amongst the poorest 20 percent of the population?Comprehensive Multi-Dimensional Programming for Nutrition JESSICA BATEMAN

Cas Initial Findings 16 Feb
1. A 2008 survey in Cambodia found improvements in maternal nutrition were improving child nutrition at birth, but malnutrition was worsening in children under 5, likely due to increases in food prices.
2. Both urban and rural areas saw increases in infection rates, but rural areas had much higher levels. Food consumption was decreasing in both areas but more sharply in urban locations. Poor urban areas were hit hardest by food prices and considered an emergency situation.
3. Breaking the malnutrition-infection cycle requires focusing on community screening and supported referrals for severe malnutrition, with the greatest immediate need in poor urban areas. The situation needs close monitoring with local data to see rising malnutrition incidence.
Boosting Nutrition Impact via Integrated Program Strategies
The document summarizes an integrated nutrition program in Bangladesh called Jibon o Jibika that targeted 200,000 children under age 2. It showed that reducing undernutrition was more effective when all program components, such as food production, marketing, health, water and sanitation, were implemented together. He outlined pros and cons of other seeds like safflower, canola, flax, hemp, camelina and soybean for oil production. Effective processing of oilseeds requires attention to seed dryness, cleaning and filtering to produce high quality oil.

Despite increasing recognition that fresh, healthy, local foods are scarce in low-income communities, and the creation of a number of healthy food initiatives targeting these communities, historically underserved communities still lack novel, profitable, and sustainable businesses that supply healthy, affordable and taste-satisfying foods. Bringing together the business and public health sectors, Communities IMPACT Diabetes Center at Mount Sinai School of Medicine invited business students to submit concepts and plans for viable, market and community-driven business solutions to one of our most pressing public health needs: healthy, affordable food in underserved communities. The proposed enterprises must have served communities with limited availability to healthy foods, be tailored to the particular assets and challenges in the communities, and must be developed in consultation with target communities. Proposals were judged by a panel of experts in business, food and local government. Teams competed for $25,000 in start-up funds and other business support services.
