Dear Parents/Guardians:

Beginning next week, your child will be reading Lois Lowry’s Newberry Award-winning novel The
Giver. This is a futuristic tale of a seemingly utopian society where pain, hunger, and war do not
exist. In this novel, we will be discussing the sacrifices made to live in a world free from pain,
hunger, war—and even pleasure. Narrated by a twelve-year-old boy whose newly appointed job is
essential for the survival of this utopian society, The Giver is a modern science-fiction narrative.
Your child is about to embark on a journey of thought-provoking themes—such as conformity, free
will, and euthanasia. We will be reading and discussing this novel for the next couple of months. It
is imperative that you monitor your child’s reading at home. I strongly encourage you to ask your
child questions to ensure his/her understanding of the text. The majority of your child’s literature
grade will depend on his/her understanding of the novel and its themes and literary techniques.

A copy of The Giver will need to be purchased for your child. You may purchase this book for
under $10 at Target, Barnes and Noble, or Books-A-Million. Your child will be able to write in the
book and keep the book. Upon completion of the novel, our class will be conducting our own
Ceremony of 13, similar to the Ceremony that takes place in the book. I appreciate your
cooperation and involvement in your child’s education.

Sincerely,

Ms. Ratliff
