Presenting acts_as_most_popular: A plugin to cache most popular lists, such as most viewed videos, common to many social networking applications. acts_as_most_popular is built on top of Cache Money
Cache Money is a new model caching framework for Active Record that transparently stores, synchronizes and expires model instances in memcached, through Active Record callbacks. It's a framework that provides almost all the pieces of transparently turning an application without model caching into one with model caching at the flip of a switch. In this presentation I'll show what the framework delivers, its limitation and what problems to watch out for when putting it in as drop-in intermediary for your database connection.
This document discusses jQuery UI and plugins. It provides an overview of jQuery UI classes that can be used to style elements. It also demonstrates several common jQuery UI widgets like buttons, accordions, dialogs, and tabs. The document discusses jQuery UI effects for animations and transitions. It provides tips for identifying good plugins based on aspects like their API, documentation, support, and community. Overall, the document is an introduction to using jQuery UI and evaluating jQuery plugins.

Our application got popular and now breaks under load. The document discusses common issues that cause applications to break as user load increases, such as overuse of shared scopes, inefficient database queries, and slow client-side performance. It provides examples of better approaches and techniques to optimize performance, such as using distributed caching, improving query efficiency through joins, compressing assets, and prioritizing critical CSS and JavaScript.
jQuery Anti-Patterns for Performance & CompressionPaul Irish
The document discusses various jQuery anti-patterns that can negatively impact performance and compression. It describes caching selections, using document fragments to append content outside of loops, avoiding unnecessary re-querying of elements, and leveraging event delegation with delegate() instead of binding individual handlers. The document emphasizes optimizing selector syntax from right to left, avoiding universal selectors, and detaching elements from the DOM when manipulating them to improve speed.
This document discusses the future of CSS and web development with web components. It introduces some key concepts in web components like templates, shadow DOM, custom elements, and HTML imports. Templates allow creating hidden chunks of HTML, shadow DOM provides encapsulation for styling, custom elements define new HTML tags, and HTML imports bundle related scripts and styles. Web components aim to address issues with current frontend development approaches and enable more modular and reusable code with standards like templates, shadow DOM, and custom elements. Polyfills can provide support for these features in older browsers. Popular web component libraries include Polymer and Mozilla Brick which provide pre-built reusable elements.
This document discusses performance optimization and scalability in CMS systems like Odoo. It covers three main topics:
1. Asset bundles help optimize performance by concatenating and minifying JavaScript and CSS files to reduce page load latency. They are implemented as Odoo views for caching.
2. ORM prefetching allows efficient querying of related records to avoid N+1 queries. It plans parent-child relations in a minimal number of SQL queries.
3. Preforked workers like in Gunicorn help scale the system by handling an increasing workload across multiple processes.
This document provides a tutorial for creating themes and customizing websites built with Odoo CMS. It discusses starting with basic HTML pages, using snippets to build reusable components, adding JavaScript and CSS logic, organizing snippets, and adding customizable options. The goal is to demonstrate how to achieve infinite customizations through templates, inheritance, and overriding variables to create fully customized themes while leveraging the robust Odoo backend.

jQuery For Beginners - jQuery Conference 2009Ralph Whitbeck
This document outlines a presentation on beginning jQuery. It introduces jQuery, its history and core team. It also covers how to set up jQuery and explains its core functionality, including selecting elements, manipulating the DOM, AJAX, and events.
The document discusses various security vulnerabilities in Ajax applications including CSRF, login CSRF, JavaScript hijacking, XSS, and history stealing. It provides examples of how these attacks can be carried out and emphasizes the importance of validating and sanitizing user input to prevent scripts from being executed maliciously on a site. The document also recommends techniques for protecting against these attacks, such as using authentication tokens and disabling client-side script evaluation for untrusted sources.
Cookies store small pieces of data in the user's browser and are used to implement sessions. Sessions associate user data stored on the server with a unique ID (stored in a cookie). Users are authenticated by verifying their username and password which starts a session if valid. Authentication verifies a user's identity, while authorization determines what resources they are allowed to access based on permissions.
The document discusses using the Google Custom Search API to build a web application for searching definitions from the SML Basis Standard Library. It provides steps to generate a code snippet from the Google Custom Search and paste it into a page to display search results. It also describes using the Google JavaScript API to make search requests from the client-side and process the results by displaying them on the page while avoiding cross-domain errors.
Progressive downloads and rendering allow content to be delivered and displayed to the user incrementally to improve perceived performance. JavaScript should be placed at the bottom of the page to avoid blocking. CSS can block rendering so should also be delivered non-blocking when possible. Techniques like flushing output, non-blocking scripts, and data URIs can help deliver content progressively. MHTML and preloading can help optimize delivery across multiple HTTP requests. The overall goal is to start displaying content as soon as possible while content continues downloading in the background.

ActiveRecord is the default ORM used in Rails to map database tables to Ruby classes. It provides an active record pattern implementation that allows models to be queried and persisted to a database. ActiveRecord encourages a model-driven development style with non-anemic models and associations that add methods to related classes for easy data access and management. While it abstracts some SQL details, ActiveRecord exposes SQL as needed and requires SQL knowledge to handle more complex queries.

Webinar: Designing a schema for a Data WarehouseFederico Razzoli
Are you new to data warehouses (DWH)? Do you need to check whether your data warehouse follows the best practices for a good design? In both cases, this webinar is for you.
A data warehouse is a central relational database that contains all measurements about a business or an organisation. This data comes from a variety of heterogeneous data sources, which includes databases of any type that back the applications used by the company, data files exported by some applications, or APIs provided by internal or external services.
But designing a data warehouse correctly is a hard task, which requires gathering information about the business processes that need to be analysed in the first place. These processes must be translated into so-called star schemas, which means, denormalised databases where each table represents a dimension or facts.
We will discuss these topics:
- How to gather information about a business;
- Understanding dictionaries and how to identify business entities;
- Dimensions and facts;
- Setting a table granularity;
- Types of facts;
- Types of dimensions;
- Snowflakes and how to avoid them;
- Expanding existing dimensions and facts.
