This paper discusses transformer life management and condition assessment techniques used in Germany. It provides 13 case studies of issues identified in transformers along with the diagnostic procedures used to detect the problems. The case studies cover issues with insulation systems, cooling units, cores, windings, on-load tap changers, and mechanical defects. A wide range of diagnostic methods are discussed including dissolved gas analysis, furan analysis, moisture detection, thermal monitoring, and partial discharge measurement. The case studies demonstrate how various diagnostic techniques can be used together to identify and locate transformer issues.
