The pyramids of Giza were built using ramps and cranes to transport stone blocks to higher levels. Ramps reached platforms where cranes would turn blocks 90 degrees to proceed up the next ramp section. Internal tunnels and ramps were filled with rubble from construction. The Pyramid of Khafre at Giza featured a nearby Great Sphinx statue with the head of the pharaoh and body of a lion to guard the site.
