needed services (may act as helper, interpreter,

4. Advocate: SW takes a partisan interest in the client and his/her cause.
Objective is to influence another party, usually possessing some power
or authority over the client
• Will argue, debate, bargain, negotiate, manipulate the
environment on behalf of client
• May use non-consensual strategies, e.g., direct confrontation,
administrative appeal, courts and political systems.
5. Enabler: SW helps client find the coping strengths and resources within
themselves to solve their problems
• SW performs a supporting and empowering function to
enable client to achieve defined change
• SW may help client change own reality/environment if this is
the source of the problem

6. Counselor/Therapist: SW’s goal is to help restore, maintain, or enhance
the client’s capacity to adapt or adjust to his/her current reality
• SW engages in a case-to-case approach to problem-solving
• SW provides emotional support to specific techniques include
purposive listening, reassurance, persuasion, direct advice,
teaching, guidance, suggestions, logical discussions, and
exercise of professional and/or legal authority
• There are client problems caused by factors in the client (e.g.,
wrong attitudes, distorted values, low self-esteem, ignorance,
lack of self-understanding, limited use of knowledge) so client
is the main target of change, but change may occur in the
client situation as a result of change in the client
