An Analysis of Black Panther

An Analysis of Black Panther
Black Panther is often hailed as one of the movies that Black Panther positively portrays African American communities. The dominant public discussions about Blacks, for example, normally contradict s their views about themselves. Additionally, their depictions in the movie world is often a representation of the American social climate. Indeed, the stereotypes that are extended to them is often apparent in early films and mainly acted as derogatory images that are exaggerated as a means way of mockery. This negative popular culture traces back to the minstrelsy and black face, which is a musical phenomenon in which whereby White actors impersonated Blacks. However, emerging contemporary films often attempt to defy these negative stereotypes by assigning Black characters superior roles. Black Panther glorifies African Americans by overcoming stereotypes and providing a positive narrative of Black male characters. Comment by Prof Waller: Stop letting the culture write your papers. YOU need to write you papers and essays from now on, even after thuis semester is over; you need to be able to write as your self for term papers and for dissertation theses in the future. “Hailed” is a euphemism from media, public relations and dumb movie posters. You are not even saying this, you are writing a topic sentence that ought to describe your topic. YOU are expressing a (questionable) sentence that the movie is positive, and a flat out false claim that the movie portrays African American communities (it does not even portray AFRICAN communities, but luckily, your topic sentence only needs to introduce a topic, which you have done here. I hope this strange claim however, does not taint your thesis. Comment by Prof Waller: This is a troubled thesis—it is not edited enough and so there is ambiguity about modification (‘discussions’ is plural, so the verb, ‘contradict’ here needs to be singular. Also, there is a coherence problem. Are you seeking to argue that the ‘discussions’ contradict ‘THEIR views about THEMSELVES? How can discussions have views, or views about THEMSELVES. That is incoherent. Comment by Prof Waller: There can be no ‘additional’ thesis sentences—you need a summary of support here or whatever your thesis was. Is this second thesis sentence your actual thesis? The form of the essay needs to now take the weight of clarification since your grammar is unclear. Comment by Prof Waller: A basic coherence problem is your use of pronouns, ‘they’, ‘their’ and ‘them’. What does these pronouns refer to? It seems you mean that they refer to your subject ‘Blacks’ from the topic and the first thesis sentence, but that is unclear grammatically—this means you did not do a careful enough third draft. Comment by Prof Waller: This is a third thesis. I’m pretty sure you paid no attention to the outline of essay form as you were writing—remember that I t ...
This document discusses several films and concepts in film analysis. It provides discussion questions about the films Casablanca, Citizen Kane, and The Scarlet Clue. It asks the reader to watch some early short films and answer questions about them. Finally, it poses additional questions about films, characters, and film terminology to test the reader's understanding. The document examines films from different eras to analyze themes of character development, social attitudes, and film techniques.
The document discusses various style and voice concerns in writing, including the appropriate use of first and third person pronouns, formality versus informality, and ensuring one's writing reflects a natural personal voice. It provides examples of passages that effectively or ineffectively demonstrate these qualities. The document also briefly covers topics like quoting, paraphrasing, summarizing information from sources, and using punctuation correctly with quotations.
This document discusses the movie Avatar and how it can be analyzed through a postcolonial theory lens. It provides both positive and negative critiques of the film from postcolonial perspectives. Some see it as anti-colonial for depicting the indigenous Na'vi winning against colonizing forces, while others argue it repeats colonial narratives by having the story told through the perspective of the white male protagonist. The document explores these complex and contradictory readings through discussion of concepts from postcolonial theorists like Bhabha, Spivak, and Said.

Noir essay comment and influences from societyEmily Bell
This document provides an outline for a paper analyzing how classic film noir movies from the 1940s and 1950s commented on American society during that era. The paper would define film noir as a genre, explore its origins in German expressionist cinema, and discuss the stylistic conventions it employed. Using examples like Scarface, Casablanca, and The Big Heat, the outline calls for paragraphs analyzing how the films depicted Americans' pre-war and post-war anxieties, attitudes toward criminals, and evolving roles of women through their characters and plots. Taken together, the movies examined would show how film noir contributed to the era's pervasive feelings of fear and suspicion.
The document discusses various style concerns related to using a personal voice in writing. It states that a personal voice does not require using first person pronouns or being informal, but rather means using natural language. The document provides examples of passages with and without a personal voice. It also discusses using quotations, paraphrasing, and summarizing and the differences between those techniques.

The document summarizes and compares how wind is portrayed in two Romantic poems: Percy Bysshe Shelley's "Ode to the West Wind" and Samuel Taylor Coleridge's "The Eolian Harp." In Shelley's poem, the west wind is depicted as both a destructive and preservative force of nature, destroying leaves in autumn but carrying seeds to regenerate new life in spring. In Coleridge's poem, the wind provides the erotic sound of the harp, bringing joy to listeners but without vital importance to nature. Overall, the document analyzes how the two poems present different representations and roles of the wind.

Analytical Writing and Thinking
10 December, 2014
Noir 2.0: Why Blade Runner Keeps Film Noir Alive
When one thinks of a rain-soaked Los Angeles at night, with a detective navigating
danger to crack a revolutionary scheme, one would probably think of a film noir classic like Kiss
Me Deadly. You’d probably also think that those black-and-white films of dangerous women and
deadly crime schemes of 70 years ago have long since died. However, if you throw in a dash of
science fiction technology, some high-contrast neon-lit cinematography, and a futuristic LA
dystopia, you have Blade Runner, a 1982 neo-noir directed by Ridley Scott. Widely regarded as
a “cult classic,” Blade Runner initially performed poorly in the box office weekend, with a gross
of $6.15 million, only a fifth of its total budget. Since then, it has gained tremendous popularity,
now grossing almost $34 million (“Blade Runner”). This film holds the keys for the directors of
today to create films in the noir tradition that are socially and politically cutting, and shows that
it is still very possible to produce films with the visual noir stylistics without being restricted to
the black and white film of old. As such, I believe that Blade Runner would be an invaluable
addition to the Analytical Writing and Thinking course focusing on the progression of film noir
due to its uniquely futuristic yet stylistically noir cinematography, its presentation of modern
social and political issues that even today face significant controversy, and its unrelenting motif
of the “fear of the future” emphasized by technological overreaching and environmental
destruction.

Since the classic film noir cinematography is characterized by dark shadows and sharp
contrasts in black-and-white format, one might be tempted to say that film noir has died solely
because of the invention of color film. However, Blade Runner does much to dispel this view
through its use of visually stunning color cinematography that incorporat.
The document provides information about narrative theory and concepts that can be used to analyze media productions for an exam. It discusses several narrative theories and concepts, including:
1. Tzvetan Todorov's concept of narrative structure as involving an initial equilibrium, a disruption of equilibrium (disequilibrium), and a resolution or new equilibrium.
2. Vladimir Propp's concept of character archetypes in narratives, such as the hero, villain, helper, donor, princess, dispatcher, and false hero.
3. Roland Barthes' concepts of the hermeneutic (enigma) code and proairetic (action) code that create mystery and suspense in narratives.

This is the theory revision I created for my A2 Media group a couple of years ago. There is some general narrative theory, Media theory Laura Mulvey etc and Racial Representation theory, Stuart Hall, Paul Gilroy, bell hooks etc. This was based on Media and Collective Identity focusing on the representation of black culture in British Film and American Music Videos.
This document provides an overview of various media theories that can be applied to analyzing representations in media. It discusses theorists such as Laura Mulvey, John Berger, Bell Hooks, Stuart Hall, Tricia Rose, Paul Gilroy, Michael Eric Dyson, Kobena Mercer, Jacques Lacan, Michel Foucault, and concepts like narrative theory, audience reception theory, and moral panic. Revision tips are provided, emphasizing applying these theories to coursework and case studies through references to different media like films, music videos, and magazines. Key ideas from different theorists are summarized, such as Hall's notions of "slave figure," "the native," and "the clown/entertainer" characterizations of

Comparing Humanistic-Existential Psychotherapy with Other Approaches
Psychologists have developed various theories on human psychology. The Humanist,
existential, and humanist existential models explain the personality changes. The models are
central in therapies as they define how people perceive and accept life challenges. The humanist
model emphasizes the innate goodness in people, while the humanist-existential psychotherapy
model argues that personalities change, and people can develop new attributes based on
circumstances.
Two models: Humanistic-existential psychotherapy and Humanist psychotherapy
Humanistic-existential Psychotherapy
Humanistic Existential Psychotherapy (HE) postulates that the human personality is
dynamic, and changes occur across the lifespan that defines personality at each point
(Hounkpatin et al., 2015). The model integrates humanistic and existentialist approaches. The
humanist perspective claims that human beings are good, while the existentialist proposes that
people are neither good nor bad (Daei Jafari et al., 2020). Integration of the two models creates a
dynamic person capable of actualizing based on situations and strengths. The model is adopted as
a transition from the traditional conception of personality as a stable element that remains
consistent throughout life. The HE models framework asserts that individuals confront and
challenge a meaningless life as they transform their lives into a personality they desire. The
person pursues self-rated health, self-efficacy, psychological turning point, and life satisfaction
that involves a subjective evaluation of an individual’s wellbeing (Hounkpatin et al., 2015).
These components keep an individual driven to improve their lives. Notably, societal norms and

In Massachusetts, we have several groups for substance use both such as AA meetings and , NA meetings that are held in most area areasjust not a sufficient amount. Some. So me groups are also held at treatment centers by alumni which is a great thing because it will provide members with great responsibility skills. Some of the groups like psychoeducation and 12 steps meetings are mainly for those who are going through andchallenges and have a past with substance use. I plan to hold a group not only for those who have been through it but also withhave family members that are looking for resources and better understanding of the disease. The need for substance use group in the Boston, MassMassachusetts community is in high demand. Although Boston is a wide community where the rent can be high and have good paying jobs, many still struggle s with the everyday life stressors that can lead to excessive drinking. In my community I believe that the need for substance use group can benefit so many specifically those in the poverty area, because they are dealing with these issues every day. Also, due to therapy being frown upon in their environment and some lack the ability to seek professional help. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), depression is a common and severe
health issue that affects how someone feels, thinks and acts. The most common symptoms of
depression are; having bad moods and feeling very sad, losing interest in the activities that were
once fun, loss of appetite, which in turn will lead to massive weight loss or gain that is not related
to dieting and difficulty in concentrating, thinking or making decisions (LeMoult & Gotlib, 2019).
People become depressed due to various factors; some of the significant social factors that
bring about depression include; encountering traumatic events, separation from parents or
caregivers and being bullied. Personality some people are inclined towards experiencing
depression. For instance, people who tend to hold worries, have a low-self-esteem, are
perfectionists and are very sensitive towards negative criticism naturally have a higher likelihood
of facing depression.
Depression throughout history has always been a health problem for people. According to
articles written by philosophers and writers throughout humanity's history, there is depression,
which is a health condition. The articles also include some of the continuous struggles that have
been made to find a solution on treating this condition. For instance, the ancient Greeks and
Romans had different thinking on depression. Some of the literature shows that the Greeks had a
notion that depression was a form of evil spirit possession and used exorcism techniques like;
beatings and starvation as "treatments" to cure a person. On the other hand, the Romans thought
depression was a combination of biological and psychological issues and employed gymnastics,
special diet, herbal medicine and music to treat the patients (Taquet et al., 2020).

Learning Objectives
This was my third semester at Westcliff University, and I explored a wide range of
helpful strategies and practical techniques that benefited my overall career and life balance.
For instance, the habit of professional journaling helps me release my stress and motivate
myself to keep on track towards my goal.
From week 3, I started to prepare the professional portfolio, and I felt it was an
excellent way to keep a record of my achievements and experiences. From week 5, the
interview exercise taken with the senior manager from my department, I have learned about
her personal experiences and know a little more about strategic leadership. Another valuable
material that I learned from this class is always to be prepared. Before I interview the senior
manager, I prepare additional questions to ask my supervisor and colleagues about my
performance. I was nervous during the interview, but these extra questions helped me come
down and make the conversion more smooth.
At the beginning of this semester, my goal was to improve my communication skills
in the workplace and learn how to be more flexible in dealing with incidents. From week six
course’s video, “I Wanna Be a Human Resources Officer - A Day in the Life of a Human
Resources Officer,” made me see some perspectives of the responsibility of a Human
Resources Officer and provided me some direction to improve my interpersonal skills. I
always find ways to improve my confidence when I communicate with people and learn how
to be an active listener.
Week seven’s video about “Internship Expectations vs. Realities- the Intern Queen”
makes me think about expectations and realities at the workplace. What expectation does the
employer look for, and how should I improve my performance regarding their expectation?
3
Additionally, through this semester, I realized different ways of conveying a message
could have other effects and impact communication effectiveness. During the internship, I
utilized the benefits of a supportive and positive environment.
Taking everything into account, I believe that I made significant progress towards my
goals, and I became more efficient and productive at work.
Internship Experiences
This semester I am considering switching to a new company that will allow me to
practice my professional skills in the area of individual and corporate taxes. Therefore, I
started my journey to submit job applications and prepare for an interview. Finding an
appropriate position that matches my interests and abilities is not an easy task. I felt frustrated
for the first few weeks when I did not get many responses. However, I record all my feelings
and things that I need to work on in my resume and cover letter in my journal. Additionally, I

The correction officers have a specific function: protecting the community by leading and supervising offenders and reporting the individual who has failed to comply with the regulations to sentencing. Alongside the organizational mission, the correction subdivision has its designed mission. Its mission is to deliver effective service to the community by service diligently while collaborating with other agencies of the criminal justice community (Bell et al., 2018). As such, it serves the community without violating their rights. The detention department ensures people's safety within the community by protecting the surrounding society in various ways, such as establishing safe, secure, and human supervision. It also provides the confinement of inmates by making them follow the law without violation.
However, the subdivision is faced with challenges like the overpopulation of inmates. The inmates are flocked within the organization, thus posing a chall ...

CLA 1
Every organization aims at achieving a certain level of performance when it comes to the profitability of the organization. The sales force in any organization is very instrumental towards the performance of an organization as they help push the sales of an organization to the desired level. Organizations must see the value that the salespersons bring to the organization as this impacts the motivation and the productivity of the salespersons (Kuvaas et al., 2017). When a sales team feels that there is value to an organization then they become engaged in their work and perform well. Organizations can show that they value the salespersons by involving them in decision-making, paying them well, and also recognizing achievements.
Skill sets refer to the various abilities and abilities that an individual employee has that enable them to perform according to expectations in an organization. The skill sets vary from the type of sales employee; a salesperson needs more persuasion skills while a sales manager might need more communication skills and leadership skills (Kuczmarski & Kuczmarski, 2019). An organization can ensure that it has the right skill set by ensuring that the recruitment process is thorough and looks at the practical skills of employees as well.
Global sales refer to the sales that an organization makes outside the country where it is located. Global sales skills are important in ensuring that an organization can effectively penetrate an outside market. Global sales skills include understanding the cultural differences and the language of the target nation. A sales team needs to understand what is offensive in other nations such as gestures, body language so that they do not put off customers (Cuevas, 2018). The global sales skill needed by sales managers includes effective communication and an understanding of the trade regulations in different countries. They need to be able to contact customers remotely and manage sales teams in different locations.
The performance of any organization is important as it is an indicator of growth and progress in an organization. When it comes to the performance of employees it is directly related to the rewards system in an organization. Employees need to be motivated to put in extra work in the organization and the easiest way for an organization to motivate employees is to make them feel that they are appreciated and their efforts are recognized. Employees and particularly sales employees work in teams when the performance appraisal is done, it is important that the best-performed employees are rewarded (Asaari et al, 2019). When this is done the other members of the team will be inspired and motivated to increase productivity. An increase in the productivity of an employee translates to the performance of an organization in terms of sales and profitability.
Rewards are multidimensional and exist in different forms and categories in different organizations. The two broad categ ...

Child Development: Observation and Reflection
The observation data that I gathered and the process that I used to observe significantly informed my ability to conduct observations in the field. For instance, I learned the most important steps in observation such as familiarizing myself with the subjects and taking note of all the activities that take place since they are all useful in the final analysis. The observation data made me realize the value of being keen during field observations so that no detail is left out.
Some of the questions that emerged during the observation process about the children in the media are whether children have similar developmental capabilities and whether play can be used to rectify a child’s developmental delays. The overall experience of observing made me question teachers’ ability to understand all the unique aspects of child development and how they use them to create unique and engaging learning activities. I experienced the challenge of remaining objective since my personal feelings were consistently influenced by judgments and observations.
As I reflect on the observation process and the overall experience, the question that arises is how infants and young children can exhibit an interest in problem-solving yet their mental faculties have not fully developed. The question exposes the complexity of cognitive development in children since it reveals that children develop cognition from social, emotional, and perceptual experiences.
I would like to know the cognitive capabilities of the children I observed by having one on one sessions with them so that I could test their abilities. I believe that intelligence varies not only in adults but also in children an indication that a child’s developmental milestones are unique and different from that of another child. The only similarities are the age of occurrence for each developmental milestone.
The data that I obtained during my observations deepened my understanding of children’s development and learning. I realized that the developmental domains are interlinked since the development of one domain builds onto another domain. For instance, the development of the social and emotional domains contributes to the emergence of the cognitive domain. I realized that the domains do not operate in isolation but instead strengthen each other as the child develops. I also learned that the environment plays a significant role in a child’s development. For instance, when a child grows up i ...

This document provides a historical overview of chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear (CBRN) terrorism from the 1970s through the 1980s. It notes that while CBRN terrorism was not a major threat during this period, some terrorist groups did show interest in acquiring and using CBRN weapons. In the 1970s, there were a small number of incidents involving the use or acquisition of CBRN agents, mostly crude chemical or biological weapons. Debate emerged around terrorists' technical capabilities and motivations for CBRN use. In the 1980s, incidents slightly increased, including the first biological terrorism attack by the Rajneeshpuram Cult in 1984. However, CBRN terrorism was still not a

This document provides a summary of a global report on ageism published by the World Health Organization in 2021. The report finds that ageism is widespread, harmful, and under-recognized. It affects people's health, well-being, and human rights. The report examines the scale, impact, and determinants of ageism against both older and younger people. It also reviews evidence on strategies to prevent and respond to ageism, such as policies and laws, educational interventions, and intergenerational contact. The report recommends investing in evidence-based strategies, improving data and research, and changing public narratives around age and aging to build a more age-inclusive world.

My neighbor’s son is a seven-year-old child who has progressed to second grade and is
becoming less reliant on his parents. He is a bright and athletic child who can ride a bike, roller
skate, and play badminton and table tennis. The child is attentive and can read, recount stories,
and do puzzles with ease. He is physically fit, standing 3 feet 12 inches tall and weighing 24
pounds. The body of a child grows and changes as it prepares to become an adult (Papalia &
Martorell, 2018). Seven years is a remarkable age, especially for boys, because it marks the end
of the newborn years and the beginnings of adulthood. He is, nevertheless, going through a
seven-year crisis, a period of change in which the child gains a new perspective on the world. It
enables him to advance to the next stage of his growth. Both at home and on the playground, the
observation was made. This case study is based on observing and analyzing changes in a seven-
year-old boy's physical, psychosocial, emotional, and cognitive development.
The boy spends roughly an hour and a half every day on the playground. He interacts
with the kids, runs with them, jumps, plays the ball, and hangs from the crossbar. The muscles of
the legs, arms, chest, and back are all actively developed, according to the findings. He grows
tough and robust, and he can walk for several kilometers. He can change the speed of his
movement by running slowly or swiftly. He can hop over minor barriers and shift direction
without slowing down while in motion. He can jump forward, up, to the sides, and over tiny
obstacles on one foot. He climbs up and down the stairwell and the rope ladder with ease. The
child has no developmental limitations and can readily hang from the crossbar. He also has no
trouble socializing and communicating with his classmates and other youngsters on the
playground.
Observing him on the playground, it is apparent that the child has reached a high degree
of physical development. He develops strength, endurance, and dexterity needs constant

Privacy Issues in Multi-Tenant Cloud Computing
Chapter Two: Literature Review
Introduction
A multitenant cloud is a cloud computing architecture that allows customers to share computing resources in a public or private cloud. Multitenant involves different cloud computing clients using or transferring a single computing infrastructure. This arrangement exposes the clients who have agreed to various privacy issues relating to their data and information stored in the cloud (Al-Ruithe et al., 2018). Evidence indicates that some of the privacy issues involved in multitenant cloud computing include data leakage, data breach, and exposure of the private data relating to clients involved in the agreement. As the number of people using cloud computing balloon, privacy issues are becoming a significant problem for many consumers who use the same cloud computing architecture in a private or public setting. It is essential to define what multitenant cloud entails before developing a clear concept or problem that can be investigated. According to Park et al. (2018), "A multitenant cloud is a cloud computing architecture that allows customers to share computing resources in a public or private cloud" (Park et al., 2018). Each tenant's data must be isolated in this cloud computing arrangement and cannot be accessed or seen by the partner tenant. However, the recent growth in technology has made data privacy in cloud computing challenges, posing a big problem to cloud computing providers.
The theoretical foundation for the current privacy issues in multitenant cloud computing is drawn from the study done by Park et al. (2018). According to Park et al. (2018), the most significant privacy issue in multitenant cloud computing is the lack of configurability. Configurability poses a colossal privacy issue in this infrastructure because the tenants have to share the same configuration. However, there is little evidence to provide this theory, and this study will play a significant role in contributing to this theoretical framework (Meng et al., 2021). The purpose of the current study is to investigate privacy and confidentiality issues in multi-tenancy cloud computing. Specifically, in this chapter, studies that have been done in the last five years focusing on this topic will be reviewed through a professional literature review.
Chapter Outline
The current chapter will be structured using headings and subheadings to ensure that each aspect is captured during the literature review. The study will be structured in 12 different sections, of which some may have sub-sections. The twelve sections in the current chapter will include introduction, chapter outline, search strategy, introduction to cloud computing, multi-tenancy cloud computing, and cloud computing deployment models. The other sections will consist of cloud computing service models, ...

Introduction
CHINA is an ancient country that has one of the oldest civilizations on earth. Its written history is almost 4,000 years old, and throughout much of its existence, its cultural traditions have had a profound impact on the entire East Asian region. China occupies much of the mainland of East Asia and shares land borders with 14 countries (Afghanistan, Bhutan, India, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Laos, Mongolia, Myanmar, Nepal, North Korea, Pakistan, Russia, Tajikistan, and Vietnam). With a geographical area of about 3.7 million square miles, China is slightly larger than the United States (see Figure 6.1). Among the countries of the world, only Russia and Canada are larger in area. Unlike the United States, where almost 20 percent of the land is utilized for agriculture, China cultivates around 10 percent of its land on a permanent basis.
Because of rugged and inhospitable geographical conditions, particularly in the western regions, large areas of China are uninhabited. As a result, approximately two-thirds of the population live along the east coast, which represents about one-fifth of the land. China has long held the distinction of having the world’s largest population at more than 1.3 billion. This figure is greater than the combined populations of Europe, Russia, and the United States. More than 91 percent of the people belong to the Han ethnic group. All of the other ethnic minorities represent less than 1 percent of the population, with the exception of the Zhuang minority at 1.3 percent of the total population.
Approximately 31 percent of the labor force is employed in agriculture and forestry, with industrial and service ventures employing 30 and 36 percent, respectively. Iron, steel, and textiles are among the more prominent industries. In 1978, Chinese leaders initiated a program to modernize agriculture, industry, science and technology, and national defense. Their goal was to achieve a fairly advanced industrialized country by the year 2000. This program was prompted, in part, by the fact that the standard of living had been in a considerable state of decline since the 1950s.
Throughout China’s more recent political history under communism, the state essentially owned the industrial enterprises and commercial ventures of the country. Because people were guaranteed life-long employment, concerns about workforce productivity had been negl ...

Introduction
THE LONGEST-RUNNING social science experiment of the twentieth century officially ended on December 25, 1991, with the resignation of Mikhail Gorbachev as president of the Soviet Union. From the Bolshevik Revolution of 1917 until Gorbachev’s resignation, the rulers of the Soviet Union had attempted to create a communist society that would be the envy of the world. Support for this goal was continual for more than 70 years, but the sense of purpose and direction began to unravel during the late 1980s. The principal cause for this shift in opinion was Gorbachev’s alternative rationale for achieving socialism. Although his ideas were a radical departure from some of the basic tenets of Leninism, Gorbachev generally favored implementing them incrementally. Nevertheless, disaffection with these ideas became quite pronounced among devoted communists, which led to the attempted coup of August 1991. This was followed by Gorbachev’s resignation and the formal dissolution of the country by year’s end.
The Soviet Union had been composed of 15 republics: Armenia, Azerbaijan, Byelorussia, Estonia, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kirghizistan, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldavia, Russia, Tadzhikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine, and Uzbekistan. Russia was not only the largest republic in terms of territory and population, but it also dominated the policies of the Soviet Union—so much so that the words Russian and Soviet were often used interchangeably when referring to the foreign and domestic policies of the Soviet Union. Today, Russia is the largest country in the world, almost twice the size of the United States. It encompasses more than 6.5 million square miles that stretch from Eastern Europe through the northern half of Asia. The population of about 139 million has become more urban over the past 50 years. In fact, it has reached about 80 percent of the population— almost an exact reversal of the urban and rural ratio at the time of the 1917 Revolution (see Figure 5.1).
Russia is a federation consisting of six categories of administrative units. These include 21 republics, nine territories, 46 provinces, two federal cities, one autonomous republic, and four autonomous regions. Among these administrative units, the republics have the greatest claim to self-government. Although Russians comprise more than 80 percent of the country’s population, there are some 126 national ...

Introduction
SOUTH AFRICA encompasses the southern tip of the African continent. It is the ninth largest country on the continent and the thirty-third largest in the world. Its northern border is shared with Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, and Swaziland. Its coastline borders the Indian Ocean on the east and south and the Atlantic Ocean on the west. In addition, South Africa surrounds the small country of Lesotho, which is approximately the size of the state of Maryland. Lesotho is a constitutional monarchy that gained its independence from the United Kingdom in 1966 (see Figure 4.1).
The population of South Africa is almost 53 million and consists of 79.5 percent black, 9 percent white, 9 percent “colored,” and 2.5 percent Asian or Indian residents. The use of the word “colored” in the South African context refers to people of mixed race and often is associated with people of African and Dutch ancestry. The principal industries of the country are minerals, mining, motor vehicles, and machinery. South Africa is a significant producer of platinum, manganese, gold, and chrome. Its major trading markets include China, Germany, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
South Africa has 11 official languages: Afrikaans, English, isiNdebele, isiXhosa, isiZulu, Sepedi, Sesotho, Setswana, siSwati, Tshivenda, and Xitsonga. With the exception of Afrikaans and English, the other languages are all Bantu languages. Bantu languages are spoken by more than 100 million Africans in east, central, and southern Africa. Afrikaans is a seventeenth-century variation of Dutch that has been considered a distinct language since the nineteenth century. Approximately 7 percent of the South African population are Afrikaners, that is, people who trace their roots to the early Dutch, French, and German settlers. Most of the English spoken is by nonwhites, along with approximately 2 million English-speaking whites who trace their ancestors to British immigrants and to the 1 million people of Asian/Indian origins.
Throughout the second half of the twentieth century South Africa was associated most with its policy of apartheid, a white supremacist ideology that emphasized white domination and racial discrimination. More will be said about apartheid shortly. First, an outline is offered of the arrival of white Europeans to this part of Africa and the pre-apartheid policies of racial segregation that had been introduced and in practice for a num ...

THE SACRIFICE HOW PRO-PALESTINE PROTESTS STUDENTS ARE SACRIFICING TO CHANGE T...indexPub
The recent surge in pro-Palestine student activism has prompted significant responses from universities, ranging from negotiations and divestment commitments to increased transparency about investments in companies supporting the war on Gaza. This activism has led to the cessation of student encampments but also highlighted the substantial sacrifices made by students, including academic disruptions and personal risks. The primary drivers of these protests are poor university administration, lack of transparency, and inadequate communication between officials and students. This study examines the profound emotional, psychological, and professional impacts on students engaged in pro-Palestine protests, focusing on Generation Z's (Gen-Z) activism dynamics. This paper explores the significant sacrifices made by these students and even the professors supporting the pro-Palestine movement, with a focus on recent global movements. Through an in-depth analysis of printed and electronic media, the study examines the impacts of these sacrifices on the academic and personal lives of those involved. The paper highlights examples from various universities, demonstrating student activism's long-term and short-term effects, including disciplinary actions, social backlash, and career implications. The researchers also explore the broader implications of student sacrifices. The findings reveal that these sacrifices are driven by a profound commitment to justice and human rights, and are influenced by the increasing availability of information, peer interactions, and personal convictions. The study also discusses the broader implications of this activism, comparing it to historical precedents and assessing its potential to influence policy and public opinion. The emotional and psychological toll on student activists is significant, but their sense of purpose and community support mitigates some of these challenges. However, the researchers call for acknowledging the broader Impact of these sacrifices on the future global movement of FreePalestine.

An Analysis of Black Panther
Suantane Shepard
Course English 119
An Analysis of Black Panther
Black Panther is often hailed as one of the movies that Black
Panther positively portrays African American communities. The
dominant public discussions about Blacks, for example,
normally contradict s their views about themselves.
Additionally, their depictions in the movie world is often a
representation of the American social climate. Indeed, the
stereotypes that are extended to them is often apparent in early
films and mainly acted as derogatory images that are
exaggerated as a means way of mockery. This negative popular
culture traces back to the minstrelsy and black face, which is a
musical phenomenon in which whereby White actors
impersonated Blacks. However, emerging contemporary films
often attempt to defy these negative stereotypes by assigning
Black characters superior roles. Black Panther glorifies African
Americans by overcoming stereotypes and providing a positive
narrative of Black male characters. Comment by Prof Waller:
Stop letting the culture write your papers. YOU need to write
you papers and essays from now on, even after thuis semester is
over; you need to be able to write as your self for term papers
2. and for dissertation theses in the future. “Hailed” is a
euphemism from media, public relations and dumb movie
posters. You are not even saying this, you are writing a topic
sentence that ought to describe your topic. YOU are expressing
a (questionable) sentence that the movie is positive, and a flat
out false claim that the movie portrays African American
communities (it does not even portray AFRICAN communities,
but luckily, your topic sentence only needs to introduce a topic,
which you have done here. I hope this strange claim however,
does not taint your thesis. Comment by Prof Waller: This is
a troubled thesis—it is not edited enough and so there is
ambiguity about modification (‘discussions’ is plural, so the
verb, ‘contradict’ here needs to be singular. Also, there is a
coherence problem. Are you seeking to argue that the
‘discussions’ contradict ‘THEIR views about THEMSELVES?
How can discussions have views, or views about
THEMSELVES. That is incoherent. Comment by Prof Waller:
There can be no ‘additional’ thesis sentences—you need a
summary of support here or whatever your thesis was. Is this
second thesis sentence your actual thesis? The form of the essay
needs to now take the weight of clarification since your
grammar is unclear. Comment by Prof Waller: A basic
coherence problem is your use of pronouns, ‘they’, ‘their’ and
‘them’. What does these pronouns refer to? It seems you mean
that they refer to your subject ‘Blacks’ from the topic and the
first thesis sentence, but that is unclear grammatically—this
means you did not do a careful enough third draft. Comment by
Prof Waller: This is a third thesis. I’m pretty sure you paid no
attention to the outline of essay form as you were writing—
remember that I told you all to TAKE OUT the outline and to
have it ON YOUR DESK as you write your three drafts,
meaning no one should ever end up submitting a third draft that
is not in essay form. That should not even be possible if you are
doing the basic thing required in this class—drafting. By now
you have to know the basics: that every intro paragraph may
have no more than three sentences. Comment by Prof Waller:
3. Many undergraduates overuse the article, ‘the’. Here it is not
needed and in fact it implies a hierarchy (“THE end of…” or
‘THE James Woods”) as if there are several of something or one
true verses other false ones. Comment by Prof Waller: None
of these extra sentences should be in your intro—all of this
extra information should be in your body paragraphs as part of
expansion. You need a summary of support to establish this
expansion. Comment by Prof Waller: This is completely out
of place. This is a fourth thesis—what are you doing? Well, it’s
brainstorming, really. A first draft. Never submit third drafts.
You have four claims all of which are so far unsupported.
Comment by Prof Waller: A fifth thesis, but no supporting
details for any of them. So, this is not an essay. It reads a grea t
deal like a speech instead of a 119 essay.
A Contextual Analysis of Black Panther Comment by Prof
Waller: I have mentioned at least three times in class this
semester that there should not be any subtitles in a college
essay. You have not been studying the outline of essay form,
nor have you studied the student paper example(s) I’ve [posted
in which you will see subtitles crossed out.
Black Panther is arguably the most celebrated African American
film in the 21st Century. In it, Cougler (2018) explores
Wakanda, a fictional African country which has never been
colonized. The territory houses the earth’s only source of
vibranium, which is a precious mineral that arrived to the earth
on a meteorite, and is incredibly scarce and valuable (Coogler,
2018). The film begins when Wakanda’s leader, T’Chaka, is
killed, and his son, T’Challa, is required to take over the throne.
However, T’Challa is challenged for the kingdom’s leadership
by his cousin, Eric Killmonger (Coogler, 2018). For some time,
Killmonger successfully dethrones T’Challa but is eventually
overpowered by T’Challa. Comment by Prof Waller: Huh?
What does this mean? ‘Celebrated’ is a euphemism just like
‘hailed’—empty language. You need to write your own papers,
not have the culture write them for you. This is by the way the
topic sentence of a brand-new intro paragraph. Is this your
4. actual intro? This is not a body paragraph—this topic sentence
is not taken from an essay map, you neglected to write an essay
map for your intro. Comment by Prof Waller: No parenthetical
citation of dates except after a title, not after the author’s name.
Comment by Prof Waller: This is lacking in focus,
purpose, and form—all three of the requirements for an
argumentative essay (the fifth rhetorical form that we are
working in—were you in last week’s class meeting taking
notes? Have you closely read the posted lectures? You are
required to write essays, not brainstorm. Brainstorming is for
first drafts. Always submit THIRD drafts that are in correct
essay form (second draft) and that are thoroughly edited for
grammar, spelling, essay form, agreement, punctuation, and
modification (third draft). These are the basics of the course. I
cannot actually get to assessing analysis, critique, or
interpretation of this writing because it is not actually an essay.
You need to write essays for 119.
One of the film’s defining characteristics is that it is a
modern, slick action movie. This sharply contradicts common
movies that are casted in Africa, which tend to feature appalling
aspects of turmoil, conflict, and social problems such as
poverty. Additionally, it is a departure from popular depictions
of Africa as a place where White people arrive to save the
continent from themselves. The film also mixes modernism with
traditionalism because it provides a global cosmopolitan feel,
which includes covering exotic locations such as Busan, South
Korea, which is the area in which the movie’s villain, Klaue, is
supposed to buy black market vibranium, with a major scene
occurring in a casino. Klaue is also depicted as a Bond-esque
villain, who has a literal claw on his right hand. Thus, the film
dominantly features African heroes, who are at home and in
control in global settings.
The Black representation and meaning of their racial
formation in the fiction films is founded on the changing tide of
race relations. These trends have taken place in the country’s
social system over the last century. One of the primary goals of
5. the Black movement has been to recreate a symbolic culture by
influencing the transformations that occur in African American
cultures and aesthetics. As a result, Black power movements
emerged to promote Black pride, civil rights, and community
control (Swamipersad, 2018). Thus, the emergence of African
nationalism eventually resulted in a positive shift towards the
prominence of Blacks in the political and public arenas. In
addition, this paradigmatic shift later became apparent in
Hollywood films with the surfacing of Blaxploitation.
Blaxploitation movies were cheaply produced, and featured
strong, aggressive African American leads, who would
sometimes confront racist White characters and institutions.
These includes contents that focuses on the issues that affected
Black people, such as poverty and slum life. Therefore, Black
Panther provides a better opportunity for African American
artists in Hollywood to showcase images of pride and exposure
to institutionalized racism.
The production of Black Panthers also revels the manner in
which it attempts to establish a visual tradition that particularly
negotiates and counteracts a negative history of African
American oppression. This form of oppression is often largely
generated and enacted via a visual culture and coding
(Eckhardt, 2018). For instance, many Hollywood films depict
Africans Americans as criminals, homeless, drug dealers, and
servants. In so doing, they provide a counter narrative to White
supremacy and visual culture established via Hollywood and
mass media.
Many scenes in Black Panthers awaken the idea that
heroism is not defined by color. In the first scenes after the
death of his father, for example, T’Challa is depicted as a hero
who is returning home to save his nation. The scenes of the
nation is not only African, but it is also, technologically more
advanced than the rest of the world (Coogler, 2018). Other
scenes that reflect the African nation as superior is its
exceptionalism, which stems from its century-long invisibility.
This apparent invisibility, coupled with the nation’s storage of
6. powerful mineral, Vibranium, implies that they have wealth that
other nations lack. Some of the exceptional positions that are
portrayed by the characters. Nonetheless, most of the framing
occurs via cinematography, which highlights specific images
through mise-en-scene that stresses on Wakanda’s difference
from other parts of the world.
Figure 1
An aerial depiction of Wakanda and its distinctiveness from
other parts of world
African American women also play heroic roles in the
movie. In as mucha s T’Challa is the heir to the throne, his
success is attributed to the strategic roles that women in power
are playing. Women, for example, run the military, whereas his
younger sister heads the scientific laboratory that basically
manufactures all forms of products and chemicals, such as
Vibranium. Unlike the popular American culture that portrays
Black women as inferior beings who perform roles such as
nanny, the film showcases the power of women in the society.
Thus, while the kingdom appears to showcase the characteristics
of an intersectional, often colonized African reality, it lacks an
active disruption of some of its traditional perceptions that
revolve around gender and patriarchy.
In light of the above, the Wakanda kingdom provides
viewers with a dimension of thinking regarding the interactions
between the past and the present. In so doing, it makes the
audience to struggle with the historical and modern geopolitical
status and representation of Africans. In such an
interrelationship between modernism and the past, the presence
of Wakanda makes it permissible to picture or visualize an
African nation as a truly becoming a global power. Nonetheless,
the power of Wakanda comes into question when the villain
Erik Killmonger, who the film later reveals to be from Wakanda
and T’Challa’s first cousin, steals Vibranium from a British
museum. In a brief scene he interacts with a white curator at the
Museum, an expert on African artifacts, which they both
7. examine through thick glass devices in the gallery space. From
it, the viewer can learn that the prehistoric Africa must have
been a mysterious place. From this scene, Killmonger’s tone
and discussion distinctively makes the expert ignorant in her
arrogance and places a colonial narrative of western raiding at
the forefront of the fictional Marvel adaptation.
One of the most dramatic and conflicting aspects of the
film are showcased in the scene in which Killmonger is
presented to the council of elders. Ironically, the elders mainly
come from a neighboring tribe. The seats and positioning of
each elder indicates that he is an intruder. On describing
himself as one of them, the mood and tone of the room changes.
As a result, the issue of us versus them changes immediately at
the realization that he is a Wakandan. Killmonger expresses
Black superiority when he proposes that the Vibranium be used
to set free more than seven million Blacks who are in bondage
in different parts of the world. Comment by Prof Waller:
The topic sentence of a concluding paragraph must be the
restatement of your thesis—this is not even one of the five
various theses from your intro, it is a brand new, sixth thesis.
Comment by Prof Waller: This is supposed to be a
SINGLE SENTENCE—a summary of the entire argument that
you just presented for a thesis. This has no relation to an essay
map and is also too many sentences. You cannot deal with this
course and the requirements if you do not take the time to study
the handouts, basic directives, and your class notes on my
lectures, which have repeatedly defined these requirements you
are neglecting
This would be a “D+’ at best, but I am not going to grade it—I
want you to revise this as an essay rather than preliminary draft
(no more brainstorming). Don’t do this again, this is not a
speech class but advanced composition requiring you to draft
and edit, to write in essay form, and finally, to use critical
analysis to do interpretation. Without an essay from you to
assess and to grade, I really cannot even respond to more
serious elements. You have got to submit something for me to
8. respond to and to grade.

I do not have a long lecture for you today--I want you to have
time to catch up with reading and to get papers you owe done.
Let's take a look at your current writing assignment, as well as
reviewing basic writing requirements.
Your writing assignment is to write in essay form--a brief essay,
at least three pages, in which you PROVE some or all, or even
just one point being made above, by my article on the film,
"Black Panther" based on the clips provided or if you want,
using "Black Panther" itself--the entire film or the example
passages from the film that I have posted below.
Use any one of three film sources: FILM COMMENTARY, New
York Times Film Review, or The Village Voice films review
section for your source or sources. Feel free to simply use
WIKIPEDIA if you find it too difficult to understand or find
10. data to support you in those sources.
First, however, look up the term, ‘mise-en-scene’ [Wikipedia
has a good article on it], a French theater and film technique, a
French phrase meaning ‘placement in the scene’. Once you feel
you have understood what it is, realize that two of the films that
have used it most effectively in the past 80 years have been
THE MATRIX (directed by the Wachowsky Brothers, released
in the year 1999), and CITIZEN KANE (directed by Orson
Welles, released in the year 1941).
The two films, MATRIX and CITIZEN KANE are separated by
many years but they share popularity AND critical approval as
important works of art, setting standards for achievements in
film art.
So first of everything, below are two scenes, one from KANE
and one from MATRIX, both using Mise-En-Scene brilliantly
and effectively, with both films featuring scenes of conflict
between two main characters and communicating deep meaning
in those conflicts, using Mise-en-Scene.
You will have looked up 'Mise-en-scene' and whatever you will
have decided to take from your research is fine. The two scenes
both use 'placement' ('mise') as a way to create meaning. Notice
that both scenes are very emotional, and that both scenes focus
on a conflict between two characters. In both scenes one
character is sitting down and the other is standing.
In both scenes one character is the one the writers who wrote
these films want us to identify with (the 'protagonist'). The
writing for "Citizen Kane" wants us to identify with the lead
character, the protagonist rather than the 'antagonist' who is . In
each scene the protagonist is the younger man (who is standing,
in "The Matrix" rather than the older man, who is sitting, and
who is sitting in "Citizen Kane" rather than standing--the older,
antagonist). In both scenes the older man is very angry at the
younger man--the antagonist is very angry at each protagonist.

The writing for "Matrix" is the opposite mise-en-scene
of"Citizen Kane": we are meant to identify with the man who is
standing, the lead character, in the clip[ from "The Matrix" --
The man who is sitting is angry, and even starts out shouting.
However, in "Citizen Kane" clip, the antagonist is standing; he
is the one shouting, very loudly. In both scenes you looked at,
the meaning is a strong one: that one character
is rebelling while the other character is angry about the
protagonist's rebellion.
The essays in your textbook will always have a core of emotion-
-the essays have that in common; ideas that the writers and that
manu American citizens are very passionate about. YOUR
responsibility as an academic writer and thinker in advanced
composition, is, while recognizing the feelings of ordinary
Americans when it comes to so-called 'issues', to train yourself
to RESIST emotion and passion, so that you can be CRITICAL
and to be able to objectively ANALIZE any 'issues' you
encounter in this class and in your college career.
I will be lecturing in the future about this, and I want to start
off on this idea by mentioning to you that next week I will be
lecturing on the essay, "Battle of the Ants" one of the essays in
your textbook. There is also the portion of the essay I myself
wrote, called "Black Panther in Context" which is attached, a
download link a the bottom--at the end, of this lecture.
We will talk about both essays in class on Wednesday, but as
12. you read them be aware that "Battle of the Ants" is making a
very serious point about how humans behave, by comparing
human beings to ants.
"Black Panther in Context" is a critical article that wants to
reject a lot of the popularity of the movie, "Black Panther", and
offerss some serious reasons for being so critical.
Here is essentially, the topic sentence, and the major thesis and
central critique of "Black Panther in Context":
"Our public discourse can and does often conflict with Black
popular thought. That conflict is constant, and exists in Black
response to Hollywood products, such as Panther, which has
been embraced by a large segment of the Black masses for what
are considered to be ‘positive’ values but should be critiqued as
superficial and false ..." (Waller, P. 1)
Here are pertinent sample clips from "Black

comic book violence from "Black Panther":

Here is a refresher of the "Panther" critique's supporting details:
1. The fronting of Black talent (such as director Ryan Coogler
and an admittedly commendable Black cast).
2. Perceived ‘positive’ representation of Africa, Africans, and
African genius.
3. Screen portrayals of idealized, fictional African monarchy.
4. ‘Feminist’ empowerment of Black female characters.
5. Various other cosmetic elements hailed as ‘positive’ that are
window dressing for a visually appealing, expensively
13. produced, but conventional White corporate ‘movie’ that
challenges neither the Hollywood nor the Marvel movie house
formula (fantasy, escapism, ingenuity in espousing violence,
etc.)

Here is a refresher of the "Panther" critique's supporting details:
1. The fronting of Black talent (such as director Ryan Coogler
and an admittedly commendable Black cast).
2. Perceived ‘positive’ representation of Africa, Africans, and
African genius.
17. 3. Screen portrayals of idealized, fictional African monarchy.
4. ‘Feminist’ empowerment of Black female characters.
5. Various other cosmetic elements hailed as ‘positive’ that are
window dressing for a visually appealing, expensively
produced, but conventional White corporate ‘movie’ that
challenges neither the Hollywood nor the Marvel movie house
formula (fantasy, escapism, ingenuity in espousing violence,
etc.)
