Pentecost, the ―Fiftieth day‖ is the
Greek name for Feast of Weeks, a
prominent feast in the ancient
Israel calendar celebrating the
giving of the Law on Sinai.
Christians commemorate the
descent of the Holy Spirit upon the
12 Apostles. This is the ―Birthday
of the Church‖.

Let us pray to the Lord:
Lord, have mercy.
1. That the God and Father of our
Lord Jesus Christ, who on the Day
of Pentecost graciously poured out
the Holy Spirit upon the Church,
would be pleased to pour out the
Holy Spirit upon us anew, that we
— His people, this Christian
congregation, and our Synod —
may be renewed in faith and zeal
for the Gospel, strengthened for
life in this world, preserved in the
hour of tribulation and enriched in
every way that deepens our
knowledge of the love and grace
He has for us in Christ Jesus…
2. If there are those receiving the
Rite of Confirmation this day:
That our gracious and merciful
Lord, who has baptized us into His
name and grace, and taught His
Word according to His promise,
would bless and preserve in the
true faith those who are being
confirmed this day, that He would
keep them in their baptismal grace,
forgive them all their sins, sustain
them in their pilgrimage of faith
with his Holy Supper and bring
them at last to everlasting life…
3. That our merciful God and
Savior, who has promised
forgiveness, life, and salvation to
all who faithfully eat and drink His
body and blood trusting His
promise, ―Given and shed for you
for the forgiveness of sin,‖ would
abundantly give us His healthful
Spirit, that our eating and drinking
may be beneficial to us, bestowing
upon us the fullness of His
heavenly benediction and grace…

The Tower of Babel
11 Now the whole earth had one

brick for stone, and bitumen for

its top in the heavens, and let us make a

2 When the day of Pentecost arrived, they were all

John 14:23-31
23 Jesus answered him, ―If anyone loves
me, he will keep my word, and my
Father will love him, and we will come
to him and make our home with
him. 24 Whoever does not love me does
not keep my words. And the word that
you hear is not mine but the Father's
who sent me.
25 ―These things I have spoken to you
while I am still with you. 26 But the
Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the
Father will send in my name, he will
teach you all things and bring to your
remembrance all that I have said to
you. 27 Peace I leave with you; my
peace I give to you. Not as the world
gives do I give to you. Let not your
hearts be troubled, neither let them be
afraid. 28 You heard me say to you, ‗I
am going away, and I will come to
you.‘ If you loved me, you would have
rejoiced, because I am going to the
Father, for the Father is greater than
I.29 And now I have told you before it
takes place, so that when it does take
place you may believe. 30 I will no
longer talk much with you, for the ruler
of this world is coming. He has no

The Holy Spirit Gives Peace
Following the flood, Noah‘s descendants failed to spread out and fill the earth as God had
spoken. Rather, they exalted themselves; with ―one language and the same words‖ (Gen. 11:1)
they spoke proudly and arrogantly. The Lord humbled them by confusing ―the language of all
the earth,‖ dividing and dispersing the people (Gen. 11:9). That dispersal was reversed on
Pentecost Day (the fiftieth day of Easter), when God caused the one Gospel of the Lord Jesus
Christ to be preached in a multitude of languages. ―At this sound the multitude came together‖
(Acts 2:6), for the preaching of Christ is the primary work of the Holy Spirit, whereby He
gathers people from all nations into one Church. The Holy Spirit teaches and brings to our
remembrance the words of Jesus, which are the words of the Father who sent Him. These words
bestow forgiveness and peace to those who keep and hold on to them in love for Jesus. ―Peace I
leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your
hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.‖ (John 14:27).

Jesus Teaches Nicodemus

him.‖

should not be surprised at my saying,

wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you

9 ―How can this be?‖ Nicodemus asked.
10 ―You are Israel‘s teacher,‖ said Jesus, ―and do
you not understand these things? 11 Very truly I
tell you, we speak of what we know, and we
testify to what we have seen, but still you people
do not accept our testimony. 12 I have spoken to
you of earthly things and you do not believe; how
then will you believe if I speak of heavenly
things?13 No one has ever gone into
heaven except the one who came from heaven—
the Son of Man.[e]14 Just as Moses lifted up the
snake in the wilderness, so the Son of Man must
be lifted up,[f]15 that everyone who believes may
have eternal life in him.‖[g]
16 For God so loved the world that he gave his
one and only Son, that whoever believes in him
