The Grace
O sing unto the Lord a new song; for he hath done
marvelous things
Christ, being by the right hand of God exalted, and having
received of the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, hath
shed forth this, which ye now see and hear.
And because you are sons and daughters, God hath sent
forth the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying Abba,
Father.
We all, with open face, beholding as in a glass the glory of
the Lord, are being changed into the same image from glory
to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord.
Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world
without end. Amen.
The Kyrie p. 230
The Gloria p. 231
Collect of the Day: Almighty and everliving God, who
fulfilled the promises of Easter by sending us your Holy
Spirit and opening to every race and nation the way of life
eternal, keep us in the unity of your Spirit, that every tongue
may tell of your glory; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who
lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now
and for ever. Amen.

The Proclamation of the Word
A READING FROM THE BOOK OF ACTS 2: 1-21 (multilingual
reading)
When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in
one place. And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the
rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they
were sitting. Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them,
and a tongue rested on each of them. All of them were filled with
the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit
gave them ability. Now there were devout Jews from every nation
under heaven living in Jerusalem. And at this sound the crowd
gathered and was bewildered, because each one heard them
speaking in the native language of each. Amazed and astonished,
they asked, ā€œAre not all these who are speaking Galileans? And
how is it that we hear, each of us, in our own native language?
Parthians, Medes, Elamites, and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea
and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt
and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from
Rome, both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabsā€”in our own
languages we hear them speaking about Godā€™s deeds of power.ā€
All were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, ā€œWhat
does this mean?ā€ But others sneered and said, ā€œThey are filled
with new wine.ā€ But Peter, standing with the eleven, raised his
voice and addressed them, ā€œMen of Judea and all who live in
Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and listen to what I say.
Indeed, these are not drunk, as you suppose, for it is only nine
oā€™clock in the morning. No, this is what was spoken through the
prophet Joel: ā€˜In the last days it will be, God declares, that I will
pour out my Spirit upon all flesh, and your sons and your
daughters shall
prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men
shall dream dreams. Even upon my slaves, both men and women,
in those days I will pour out my Spirit; and they shall
prophesy. And I will show portents in the heaven above and signs
on the earth below, blood, and fire, and smoky mist. The sun shall
be turned to darkness and the moon to blood, before the coming
of the Lordā€™s great and glorious day. Then everyone who calls on
the name of the Lord shall be saved.ā€™ā€
The word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.
PSALM 104: 25-35, 37b
25O LORD how man-i-fold are your works! *
in wisdom you have made them all / the earth is full of your
creatures.
26Yonder is the great and wide sea with its living things too
ma-ny to num-ber, *
creatures both small and great.
27There move the ships and there is that Le-vi-a-than, *
which you have made for the sport of it.
28All of them look to you *
to give them their food in due sea-son.
29You give it to them they ga-ther it; *
you open your hand and they are fillā€™d with good things.
30You hide your face and they are ter-ri-f-ied; *
you take away their breath and they die and re-turn to their
dust.
31You send forth your Spirit and they are cre-a-ted; *
and so you renew the face of the earth.
32May the glory of the LORD en-dure for e-ver; *
may the LORD re-joice in all his works.
33He looks at the earth and it trem-bles; *
he touches the moun-tains and they smoke.
34I will sing to the LORD as long as I live; *
I will praise my God while I have my be-ing.
35May these words of mine please him; *
I will re-joice in the LORD.
Glory be to the Father and to the Son:
and to the Ho-ly Spi-rit.
As it was in the beginning is now and e-ver shall be:
world with-out end A-men.
A READING FROM THE LETTER OF PAUL TO THE ROMANS 8: 14-17
Read by Esma Brathwaite
For all who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God. For
you did not receive a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you
have received a spirit of adoption. When we cry, ā€œAbba! Father!ā€
it is that very Spirit bearing witness with our spirit that we are
children of God, and if children, then heirs, heirs of God
and joint heirs with Christā€”if, in fact, we suffer with him so that
we may also be glorified with him.
The word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.
Gospel Alleluia:
Choir: Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia, alleluia, alleluia
All: Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia, alleluia, alleluia
Cantor: Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful
and kindle in them the fire of your love.
All: Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia, alleluia, alleluia
Gospeller: The Lord be with you.
All: And also with you.
Gospeller: The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ
according to John 14: 8-17, 25-27.
All: Glory be to thee, O Lord.
Philip said to Jesus, ā€œLord, show us the Father, and we will be
satisfied.ā€ Jesus said to him, ā€œHave I been with you all this time,
Philip, and you still do not know me? Whoever has seen
me has seen the Father. How can you say, ā€˜Show us the Fatherā€™?
Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in
me? The words that I say to you I do not speak on my own; but
the Father who dwells in me does his works. Believe me that I am
in the Father and the Father is in me; but if you do not, then
believe me because of the works themselves. Very truly, I tell you,
the one who believes in me will also do the works that I do and, in
fact, will do greater works than these, because I am going to the
Father. I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father
may be glorified in the Son. If in my name you ask me for
anything, I will do it. If you love me, you will keep my
commandments. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you
another Advocate, to be with you forever. This is the Spirit of
truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him
nor knows him. You know him, because he abides with you, and
he will be in you. I have said these things to you while I am still
with you. But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will
send in my name, will teach you everything, and remind you of all
that I have said to you. Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to
you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your
hearts be troubled, and do not let them be afraid.ā€

Almighty God, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, Maker of
all things and judge of all people: We acknowledge and
confess our manifold sins and wickedness, Which we from
time to time most grievously have committed, By thought,
word and deed, Against thy divine majesty. We do earnestly
repent and are heartily sorry for these our misdoings. Have
mercy upon us, most merciful Father; For thy Son our Lord
Jesus Christā€™s sake, Forgive us all that is past; And grant
that we may ever hereafter Serve and please thee In
newness of life, To the honour and glory of thy name;
Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Offertory Anthem: Veni Sancte Spiritus, KV. 47

and kindle the fire of your love in them.
You have gathered the nations
together in the unity of faith. Alleluia.

The Breaking of the Bread
Celebrant: ā€œI am the bread which has come down from
heaven,ā€ says the Lord.
All: Give us this bread for ever.
Celebrant: ā€œI am the vine, you are the branches.ā€
All: May we dwell in him, as he lives in us.
Communion Hymn 637 ā€œCome, Holy Ghost, our souls
inspireā€
Communion Motet: ā€œDraw us in the Spiritā€™s tetherā€
ā€“ Harold Friedell
Draw us in the Spirit's tether;
For when humbly, in thy name,
Two or three are met together,
Thou art in the midst of them:
Alleluya! Alleluya!
Touch we now thy garment's hem.
As the brethren used to gather
In the name of Christ to sup,
Then with thanks to God the Father
Break the bread and bless the cup,
Alleluya! Alleluya!
So knit thou our friendship up.
All our meals and all our living
Make us sacraments of thee,
That be caring, helping, giving,
We may true disciples be.
Alleluya! Alleluya!
We will serve thee faithfully.
The Doxology p. 247
Celebrant: Glory to God,
whose power, working in us,
can do infinitely more
than we can ask or imagine.
Glory to God from generation to generation,
in the Church and in Christ Jesus,
for ever and ever. Amen.

Music Notes:
Camille Saint-Saƫns wrote his Sept Improvisations Op 150,
between December 1916 and February 1917 while recovering in
bed from bronchitis and gave their first performances in
Marseille, Nice and Lyon a month or so later. ā€˜Feria
Pentecostesā€™, the second of the improvisations and this
morningā€™s organ prelude, is based on the first hymn of Lauds
for Pentecost, Beata nobis gaudia (very loosely translated as
ā€œAgain the circling seasons tellā€, one of several translations
of this hymn).
Composed in Vienna in 1768 when Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
was 12 years old, Veni Sancte Spiritus is a motet for choir,
soloists, organ and orchestra. It is in two parts, the first being a
setting of a sequence for Pentecost followed by a concluding
Alleluia. The choir sings continuously throughout, with short
solo interpolations.
ā€œDraw us in the Spiritā€™s tetherā€ was published in 1957, although
the hymn upon which the anthem is based was written in 1945
by one of the more influential American church musicians of
the 20th century, Harold Friedell (1905-1958). Using a text
written by Percy Dearmer (1867-1936), Friedell composed it as
a communion hymn specifically for Pentecost Sunday 1945.
Taking his previously composed hymn tune, Friedell created the
SATB anthem arrangement the choir is singing this morning.
The text beautifully links the singers with the disciples who
gathered with Christ at the table (Matthew 18:20). The image
that we are joined by a ā€œtetherā€ is archaic, but an appropriate
image of the work of the Holy Spirit that links Christians of
every time and place at the table. In the final stanza, poet
Dearmer makes a powerful statement that ā€œAll our meals and all
our living make as sacraments of theeā€; through ā€œcaring,
helping, giving, we may true disciples be.ā€ The hymn begins in
the upper room with the disciples and comes full circle as we
join them around the table and are nourished to serve others in
the world.

St. Barnabas Pentecost Service

  • 1. St. Barnabas on the Danforth The Church in the Marketplace Embracing the Community The Day of Pentecost May 19, 2013 Alleluia! Christ is risen. The Lord is risen indeed. Alleluia! 361 Danforth Ave., Toronto M4K 1P1 416-463-1344 www.stbarnabas-toronto.com Welcome to St. Barnabas (Chester) Anglican Church The Church in the Marketplace Embracing the Community Our 10:30 AM Holy Eucharist begins on page 230 of the green Book of Alternative Services. Organ: Feria Pentecostes ā€“ Camille Saint-Saens The Gathering of the Community Opening Hymn 253 ā€œO glorious dayā€ Service Music: Kyrie, Sanctus, Benedictus, Agnus Dei - Missa brevis in D ā€“ Walter MacNutt Gloria, Creed and Lordā€™s Prayer ā€“ John Merbecke The Grace O sing unto the Lord a new song; for he hath done marvelous things Christ, being by the right hand of God exalted, and having received of the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, hath shed forth this, which ye now see and hear. And because you are sons and daughters, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying Abba, Father. We all, with open face, beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are being changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord.
  • 2. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. The Kyrie p. 230 The Gloria p. 231 Collect of the Day: Almighty and everliving God, who fulfilled the promises of Easter by sending us your Holy Spirit and opening to every race and nation the way of life eternal, keep us in the unity of your Spirit, that every tongue may tell of your glory; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. Childrenā€™s Focus led by Teresa Johnson The Proclamation of the Word A READING FROM THE BOOK OF ACTS 2: 1-21 (multilingual reading) When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability. Now there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven living in Jerusalem. And at this sound the crowd gathered and was bewildered, because each one heard them speaking in the native language of each. Amazed and astonished, they asked, ā€œAre not all these who are speaking Galileans? And how is it that we hear, each of us, in our own native language? Parthians, Medes, Elamites, and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabsā€”in our own languages we hear them speaking about Godā€™s deeds of power.ā€ All were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, ā€œWhat does this mean?ā€ But others sneered and said, ā€œThey are filled with new wine.ā€ But Peter, standing with the eleven, raised his voice and addressed them, ā€œMen of Judea and all who live in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and listen to what I say. Indeed, these are not drunk, as you suppose, for it is only nine oā€™clock in the morning. No, this is what was spoken through the prophet Joel: ā€˜In the last days it will be, God declares, that I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams. Even upon my slaves, both men and women, in those days I will pour out my Spirit; and they shall prophesy. And I will show portents in the heaven above and signs on the earth below, blood, and fire, and smoky mist. The sun shall be turned to darkness and the moon to blood, before the coming of the Lordā€™s great and glorious day. Then everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.ā€™ā€ The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. PSALM 104: 25-35, 37b 25O LORD how man-i-fold are your works! * in wisdom you have made them all / the earth is full of your creatures. 26Yonder is the great and wide sea with its living things too ma-ny to num-ber, * creatures both small and great. 27There move the ships and there is that Le-vi-a-than, * which you have made for the sport of it. 28All of them look to you * to give them their food in due sea-son. 29You give it to them they ga-ther it; * you open your hand and they are fillā€™d with good things.
  • 3. 30You hide your face and they are ter-ri-f-ied; * you take away their breath and they die and re-turn to their dust. 31You send forth your Spirit and they are cre-a-ted; * and so you renew the face of the earth. 32May the glory of the LORD en-dure for e-ver; * may the LORD re-joice in all his works. 33He looks at the earth and it trem-bles; * he touches the moun-tains and they smoke. 34I will sing to the LORD as long as I live; * I will praise my God while I have my be-ing. 35May these words of mine please him; * I will re-joice in the LORD. Glory be to the Father and to the Son: and to the Ho-ly Spi-rit. As it was in the beginning is now and e-ver shall be: world with-out end A-men. A READING FROM THE LETTER OF PAUL TO THE ROMANS 8: 14-17 Read by Esma Brathwaite For all who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God. For you did not receive a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received a spirit of adoption. When we cry, ā€œAbba! Father!ā€ it is that very Spirit bearing witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs, heirs of God and joint heirs with Christā€”if, in fact, we suffer with him so that we may also be glorified with him. The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Gospel Alleluia: Choir: Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia, alleluia, alleluia All: Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia, alleluia, alleluia Cantor: Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful and kindle in them the fire of your love. All: Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia, alleluia, alleluia Gospeller: The Lord be with you. All: And also with you. Gospeller: The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John 14: 8-17, 25-27. All: Glory be to thee, O Lord. Philip said to Jesus, ā€œLord, show us the Father, and we will be satisfied.ā€ Jesus said to him, ā€œHave I been with you all this time, Philip, and you still do not know me? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ā€˜Show us the Fatherā€™? Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I say to you I do not speak on my own; but the Father who dwells in me does his works. Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; but if you do not, then believe me because of the works themselves. Very truly, I tell you, the one who believes in me will also do the works that I do and, in fact, will do greater works than these, because I am going to the Father. I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If in my name you ask me for anything, I will do it. If you love me, you will keep my commandments. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, to be with you forever. This is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, because he abides with you, and he will be in you. I have said these things to you while I am still with you. But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you everything, and remind you of all that I have said to you. Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled, and do not let them be afraid.ā€

  • 6. Camille Saint-SaĆ«ns wrote his Sept Improvisations Op 150, between December 1916 and February 1917 while recovering in bed from bronchitis and gave their first performances in Marseille, Nice and Lyon a month or so later. ā€˜Feria Pentecostesā€™, the second of the improvisations and this morningā€™s organ prelude, is based on the first hymn of Lauds for Pentecost, Beata nobis gaudia (very loosely translated as ā€œAgain the circling seasons tellā€, one of several translations of this hymn). Composed in Vienna in 1768 when Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was 12 years old, Veni Sancte Spiritus is a motet for choir, soloists, organ and orchestra. It is in two parts, the first being a setting of a sequence for Pentecost followed by a concluding Alleluia. The choir sings continuously throughout, with short solo interpolations. ā€œDraw us in the Spiritā€™s tetherā€ was published in 1957, although the hymn upon which the anthem is based was written in 1945 by one of the more influential American church musicians of the 20th century, Harold Friedell (1905-1958). Using a text written by Percy Dearmer (1867-1936), Friedell composed it as a communion hymn specifically for Pentecost Sunday 1945. Taking his previously composed hymn tune, Friedell created the SATB anthem arrangement the choir is singing this morning. The text beautifully links the singers with the disciples who gathered with Christ at the table (Matthew 18:20). The image that we are joined by a ā€œtetherā€ is archaic, but an appropriate image of the work of the Holy Spirit that links Christians of every time and place at the table. In the final stanza, poet Dearmer makes a powerful statement that ā€œAll our meals and all our living make as sacraments of theeā€; through ā€œcaring, helping, giving, we may true disciples be.ā€ The hymn begins in the upper room with the disciples and comes full circle as we join them around the table and are nourished to serve others in the world.
