Young professionals. Is this a contradiction of terms, or what is called an oxymoron?
After more than 25 years, I still love teaching college students. This generation has an energy, curiosity, openness and work ethic that is inspiring and contagious. I am optimistic about the future because these students will be leading us there. They don’t care what color you are, who you want to marry or to whom you pray, or if you pray at all. They care about making a difference and finding their passion. Students believe in fairness and equity, want to give back and have a desire to be successful.
I have lots of respect for my students and their generation. I feel comfortable sharing ideas about where they might look to grow and improve in their professionalism. Before I do, there are two presumptions I make. First, millennials (today’s students in their 20s and 30s) believe they are entitled, but it’s not the same entitlement that my contemporaries might recognize. Instead of the “you-owe-me” attitude, they harbor what I call the “aren’t-you-going-to-do-that-for-me?” entitlement. As in: “Aren’t you going to prepare all of the notes that we will need for the test?” and “Aren’t you going to overlook my absences from class because I have lots of other responsibilities?” The entitlement is not a belligerent demand, but a polite expectation. Even so, some days it amazes me what some students expect.
The second presumption? My generation created the phenomenon, in case you’re looking for a target to blame. The well-intended soccer moms and dads “shuttling” their children to and fro everywhere and the progressive parents who filled their child’s day with activities so they would be stimulated. (Full disclosure: I am not a parent, so you may dismiss my second point if you want.)
Job Search Survival Kit -- OK School's Out, Now What --Anthony Hines
This presentation will give some tips to the recently graduated college student who is about to enter the workforce. It will focus on the skills and networking ability that have already been created and show the reader how to proceed in the job search process.
Who Am I….I am a hardworking guy who, like many others, found himself out of work during the economic downturn in 2010. After a long battle of wrong turns, job search strategies that led to no where, and dead end leads, I decided to take a more strategic approach to my job search. Like anything else in life, I needed to treat my search like a full-time job and create a plan that would allow me to stand out above the competition. This came in especially handy as I was in transition again in 2017. Basically, I just used the tips that I have shared with others and was out of work a total of ZERO days. Yes, I got a job offer the day after my last day at my previous job. Let me show you how I did it so you too can have a quicker landing than you would have had without my tips.
Why Am I Sharing What Helped Me…because I quickly realized that to handle an event like that is to focus on what you can control and share the experience to help others. I believe that an experience not shared is a lost opportunity in life, and that smart people learn from their mistakes and smarter people learn from other people’s experiences. Plus, I told myself that once I figured this out I would share it with others so that they too could navigate the world of unemployment. In these chapters, I show you how I did it so that you will have the confidence to make it through the process. I hope that this presentation helps you to get your next great job.

The advertising revolution will not be televised anymore. Smart minds, smart mouths, smart phones, smart thumbs, and smart messaging are the essence of the New School multi-screen scene. The revolution will be devised by advertisers who can act like rappers, and crack stats like mathematicians.
North American: brands, advertising agencies, marketing professors, brand gurus, and celebrities have been most successful in dominating Global rankings. As a by-product of this, literature frequently refracts branding thought and practise through a English(US) and Christian lens, even if unintended. In this article, I highlight an optical phenomenon present and a rainbow of religious pluralism.
My argument is that future competitive advantage will result from authentic brands that resonate with more of the attributes of different religions explicitly from guiding first principles.
Furthermore, this has to be about appraising the implications of introducing different religions into branding as theory, as opposed to an upstream consumer targeting and advertising practise.

I’m a big fan of martial arts – whether that's practising them or watching a movie. They have also had a massive influence on my day job as a Marketer, Mentor, and Lecturer. In this article I am going to give you a brief insight into why - and maybe how Bushidō (the way of the samurai) could help you too in the workplace.
Ever since Veblen and Simmel, luxury has been synonymous with conspicuous consumption. In this conceptual paper we demonstrate the rise of inconspicuous consumption via a wide-ranging synthesis of the literature. We attribute this rise to the signalling ability of traditional luxury goods being diluted, a preference for not standing out as ostentatious during times of economic hardship, and an increased desire for sophistication and subtlety in design in order to further distinguish oneself for a narrow group of peers. We decouple the constructs of luxury and conspicuousness, which allows us to reconceptualise the signalling quality of brands and the construct of luxury. This also has implications for understanding consumer behaviour practices such as counterfeiting and suggests that consumption trends in emerging markets may take a different path from the past.
UNDERSTANDING AND ADDRESSING DIVERSITY IS AT THE HEART OF EVERY MARKETING ACTIVITY – WHETHER THAT'S ON A LOCAL, INTERNATIONAL, OR GLOBAL LEVEL. AS MORE MARKETERS RECEIVE FORMAL TRAINING AND QUALIFICATIONS, HOW SUCCESSFUL ARE THESE PROVIDERS AT PROVIDING A PLATFORM FOR NURTURING DIVERSE PROFESSIONALS WHO ARE COMPETENT IN THE ART OF IMPLEMENTING DIVERSITY CONCEPTS? IN THIS ARTICLE, THE FOCUS IS ON NATIONAL, ETHNIC, AND CULTURAL DIVERSITY.
Culture and Marketing make us human. Without culture, can there be any such thing as marketing? Without marketing, does culture survive? In the widest sense, we are all producers, consumers, and marketers of culture. At the time of writing this article, the cherry blossom blooming outside of my window gave me inspiration. Like culture, cherry blossom epitomizes both transience and symbolic transcendence, governed by environmental factors - with the petals symbolizing the connected and overlapping levels at which culture exists
‘Being able to work in a global environment’, is a phrase that is now etched onto the job descriptions
of most marketers and enshrined in today’s strategy documents. Whether that’s a reality or an aspiration - either way it’s something that requires constant work and evaluation. In this article I’m going to share some of my recent thoughts and experiences.
Here are my seven suggested areas that you should evaluate:
1. Nation Branding and National Identity
2. Cultural Ethnicity and Religion
3. Innovation and Creativity
4. Education and Training
5. Balancing Standardization and Localization
6. Networks and Channel partners
7. Multi-layered messaging
If companies acknowledge the value of employee branding; and professionals are serious about seeing themselves as brands too: maybe we should be moving towards a new system and brand architecture - where we actually calculate the brand value of more professionals, and then incentivise and reward their social media network activities?
Understanding And Addressing Diversity Is At The Heart Of Every Marketing Activity – Whether That’s On A Local, International, Or Global Level. As More Marketers Receive Formal Training And Qualifications, How Successful Are These Providers At Providing A Platform For Nurturing Diverse Professionals Who Are Competent In The Art Of Implementing Diversity Concepts? In This Article, I Will Be Focussing On National, Ethnic, And Cultural Diversity.
Pragmatically, my view is that the term ‘Muslim economy’ more accurately represents the state of current markets; and an ‘Islamic economy’ is an aspirational goal for the same rapidly growing sectors. These are aspirations aiming to encourage the harmonization of Muslim geographies, further collaboration, and a positive commitment towards celebrating the spirit of spirituality in trade and commerce. In this article I report my findings following November’s Global Islamic Economy Summit held in Dubai.
Slides are from my masterclass delivered on 10th December 2013, in the Philip Kotler Theatre, MarkPlus Inc. headquarters, Jakarta, Indonesia.
My take is founded on two simple principles:
Firstly, that the best clues as to who we are, and what we think, feel, and do, can be found through investigating the tangible and intangible:
- Media, brands and associated objects that we possess and consume
- Diversity in friends, family, jobs and hobbies
- Rituals that we engage in
- And ethno-cultural experiences around us.
Second of all, that Marketing has become the new core skill of everyone. Consumers aren't just being marketed to, they also take part in marketing the things that they consume and even themselves. This also extends outside of consumer marketing and into business-to-business (B2B) and personal branding settings.
There were Prime Ministers, Presidents, Royalty and senior representatives from: Bahrain, Bangladesh, Bermuda, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Brunei, Indonesia, Iraq, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Kosovo, Kuwait, Malaysia, Morocco, Pakistan, Turkey and the UK. Four key areas of interest were signposted and championed throughout: women, youth, education, and SMEs (small and medium enterprises). WIEF showcased the role that art, culture, and creativity play in the lives of young people within a global economy - as a means for economic empowerment and social enterprise.
There are numerous articles out there on communication and how to communicate effectively – whether that’s you, or your products and services. What I’m going to do here is give you a whistle-stop tour of some theories and guiding principles behind what factors influence communication. If you know what to look for, then you can start to understand how you can respond better. The idea being that good communication means knowing when, where, and how to play good-natured ‘games’.
This article is a further expansion of the marketing 3.0 concept in the book by Philip Kotler, Hermawan Kartajaya, and Iwan Setiawan. Here I present a new conceptual model: i-marketing 3.0, which is about highlighting the importance of forging geographies of ‘collective individualism’ and ‘individual collectivism’ – influential offerings embedded in culture, with distinct yet fluid identities and personalities; which are intuitive, sharing, and accessible.

You’re putting the finishing touches to your last assignments, cramming for your final
exams; and now the moments you’ve been waiting for are almost ‘round the corner – no
more study, graduation, and getting a job. Here are some tips to help you along the way.
No More Study?
Well…maybe not.Think about it
like this. You’re probably going to be
working for at least another forty years.
And, if you consider that heavyweight
marketing guru Professor Philip Kotler is
now in his eighties and still going strong
- globetrotting, writing, speaking, and
consulting; then you may be working for
a couple more decades beyond that forty
years.
If we bring into the marketing mix the
fact that there’s 24/7 global competition
at a level never experienced previously;
and change, knowledge, and technological
advancements are rapidly expanding
elements within this – then face a reality
where we are all going to have to study
more frequently and for longer. Plus, there
are already a growing number of people
before; all of whom are mindful of the fact
that no job is for life.
Each year there are more specialist

adverts, native and realtime advertising,
big data, and multi-screen. Marketing
has become yet another profession like
law, accountancy and engineering where
that this is only going to increase, and we
will see more MAs, MScs, MBAs, PhDs,
and DBAs not just in academia, but also
in industry with specialisms. Business and
Management programmes will be linked
to other social and life sciences subjects
like pharmacology, neuroscience, food
technology, architecture and town planning,
anthropology, behavioural psychology,
political science, journalism, and religion
amongst others. It’s a way not just to
stand out, but also to raise standards. Also,
learning marketing won’t just be about
marketing products and services; it will
extend to marketing nations, ideas, policies,
and you.
So a key question will be, how soon do
you make the plunge to sign up for another
will always get in the way, and there’s no
right time. But the sooner you do, then
intellectual and social capital that they
have to offer. Plus, whilst you’re still in the
groove of study and accustomed to living
the life of a poor student, then it may
make more sense to bite the bullet earlier.
Also, It may help to consider that some
universities are offering incentives
like discounts and scholarships to students
who want to stay on, as a loyalty deal and
two-way risk reduction strategy - because
they and you know that you have what it
takes to succeed in study.
Making the Most of Graduating
Attend your graduation ceremony – you
earned it and you deserve it! Enjoy the
moment. But don’t just party hard –
use it as a time to network
and tie up all that
with people – but make sure you annotate,
photos. Get a business card made, so that
everyone has your details. Sure we use
social media, but business cards still have
a place in the modern world. These are
going to be useful things to help remind
people of who you are now and in the
future. You’ll be around an elite group of
ambitious people who are only going to
time.
Make sure you say thank-you to

everyone who has helped you along the
way – your peers, academic staff, non-
academic staff, friends and families. Saying
thank-you is so important. I remember a
saying from one of the four rightly guided
Caliphs of Islam,Ali (may God be pleased
with him), who was also one of the
Prophet Muhammad’s (peace be upon him)
companions:
“Courtesy costs nothing, but buys
everything”.
Business is all about making friends,
forging relationships, and having people that
you can call upon. Everyone needs friends
and those bodies to lean on.
Think about what difference it would
make to your job-hunting if you show
people that they matter in advance, rather
than right before you need them. We’ve
all had people pay us compliments and
then in the same breath ask for something
that say thank-you only after you have
helped them – not bad, but not the same
as sincere gratitude expressed upfront
before you have something to gain. That’s
the difference between transactional and
worse, what about those people that forget
to say thank-you at all!
At the risk of sounding like a grumpy old
graduates are actually quite bad at this part
of the job. Many late night emails and job
references are sent out - and then as fast
as they are appear, some of those students
disappear. These are the favours that are
forgotten by people who, without knowing,
underestimate how this behaviour damages
networks - because these tasks aren’t core
or a compulsory part of the job for others.
There are only so many hours in the day,
hundreds of students in any year, and
everyone in business focuses on tasks that
deliver the most value – personal value,
market value, and a sense of satisfaction.
I’ve applied for some jobs that ask for 4-6
references.Think about how much stress
that puts on you once you’ve done all the
hard work of making the cut, but you’re
not sure whether you can count on others
to take the time to make themselves
available and support your application.
Actually, thank-you is not just about
ego fuelling, it’s also a way of keeping the
4. THE-MARKETEERS.COM // MAY 2014 // 087
lines of communication open. It’s about
extending courtesy to someone, showing
you care, and that their contribution is
vital and necessary. You are keeping them
in the loop and people like to know that
they have made a difference. I’ve found
that there are many times when a grateful
recipient has then gone onto offer further
vital insight, advice and access to their
network, which wouldn’t have happened
otherwise.
Even better than just a thank-you, is
also sharing something else. Remembering
events and things dear to that person,
offering solutions to niggling problems;
and sharing articles or your own career
successes, are all great ways to strengthen
bonds – even if they are non-work related.
I learned a lot of that from my time as an
Advertising Key Accounts Manager.Also in
some cases, later on in my career I have
returned the favour and offered the same
people references or potential vacancies
that provided references for me in the past.
I like to think that if I am asking a favour
of someone, I’ve spent maybe more time
preparing and writing my request than I
am asking them to spend on me. Don’t
be afraid to offer suggestions, guidelines,
edited information, and even ghost-written
up to them to decide what they use and
take, but it can’t hurt. In Public Relations,
if we were seeking article coverage from
a journalist, this is common practice and
perfectly acceptable – so why not try it
here.
Finding a job is actually a full-time job
The more time you spend looking for
a job, the better you are going to fare. I
mean, after all of that study, you don’t just
job; and actually, you want a career. That
takes thought, work, preparation, a strategy,
and a plan.
Throughout your career you need to
work on your CV and have it up to date
and waiting on ice.Think about the fact
that you might bump into someone who
asks you to send it over to them. If you
rush it or are ill prepared, you may make
mistakes or miss the moment, because it’s
taking you a few days to write.
Also, there’s always a better way to
present the facts. This isn’t just about
adding new achievements once you have
one – it takes constant revisions and
CVs as you can. Different jobs require
different CVs. For example a practitioner
CV may only be 2-4 pages, but for an
academic post they may be expecting
something which is about 20 pages.
So get feedback on yours.Ask people
who know you, you trust and respect.
Also, ask them how they would describe
you and whether what you’ve written
does you justice. Remember, the CV is
about the only place that it’s okay to show
off – but don’t exaggerate or lie! Word
Cloud software like wordle.net is a good
way to get a snap shot as to whether the
key words you are using give an accurate
overall picture of who you are,
what you can do, what
you want, and how
are after.
Your CV is
probably the most
important and
valuable document
that you have on
your hard drive
– get it
right and
it can
make
you a
lot of
money,
and bring you joy
and happiness. So
give it the respect,
care and attention
that it deserves –
start to see it as
an enjoyable and
worthy regular
pastime, rather
than a chore.
All of this seems
like a solitary
internet and desk task,
but that would be
a mistake.Another
important part of all of
this is to get out and
meet people. Face-to-face is still where it’s
at - even if people can be reached through
an email, LinkedIn, Facebook,WhatsApp,
Twitter etc. Find events related to your
career and even be prepared to talk
business at non-business events – because
after all we have lives outside of business
sharing a love and interest of a particular
pastime.Whenever you meet people,
follow up and try and stay in touch.Too
many people take business cards and they
sit in a draw gathering dust like souvenirs.
While you’re still in someone’s mind,
cement that bond by sending a message
saying thank-you and sharing
something
else. I’ve been to conferences and
picked up 50 business cards and then
sent emails to each of those people
that evening.Think, if even 5 people
respond, 1 of those responses could
lead to a future job opportunity. You
