Essay III – Historical Analysis Research Essay: (200 points)
Due dates: Proposal/thesis/brainstorming notes: 03/06
Pre-write / annotated bibliography 03/13
Draft (full length): 03/27
Peer Review: 03/27
Final Draft: 04/03
The final submission includes all pre-writing material, including notes on research, a hard copy submitted to the instructor and to Turnitin.com.
Note: Grades for papers with high rates of “similarity” will be penalized severely.
Analyzing historical events and their consequences is common research practice. In this essay, choose an historical event that is interesting to you, one that you may even be passionate about. Choose a topic that is debatable and has extensive sourcing. Prior knowledge of the event may be useful, even necessary. This assignment will require that you conduct a reasonable search for documentation and support. Start early and keep good notes. Start with an internet and library search. Good pre-writing protocol requires that you take notes as you read and that you document your sources accurately. Develop a thesis statement that is narrow enough to cover in a short (1700 – 2100) word paper and debatable—make a claim of value, fact, or policy.
Choosing a topic:
You may deal with various aspects of the topic: artistic, geo-political, scientific, moral, aesthetic, cultural, social, or economic. The following suggestions on the attached list may help you choose a topic.
You may wish to take a conservative or a liberal stance on a topic. Be sure that the essay is thesis driven. The essay should be developed according to the methods discussed in class and in the textbook. The paper should be 6 - 8 pages. The paper is worth 200 points. You will be responsible for all phases of the writing process. Research is required (6+ sources cited; websites/magazine/newspaper articles are OK but much less valuable).
Directions:
Write a 6 to 8-page historical analysis research paper (including a Works Cited page) in MLA format on the topic of an historical event. Follow the writing process as discussed in class and in the textbook. Be prepared to show every step of the process in class. Show evidence of brainstorming, note taking, outline and rough draft. Write a thesis driven analysis of the topic. The thesis, preferably a divided thesis, should make a strong statement or claim about the event. Write a multi-paragraph essay analyzing the historical event that you have chosen. The essay should be expository, with some description and narration where appropriate.
Historical Analysis Essay Rubric (200)
40 pts. Structure SLO #1 – divided thesis with debatable claim, coherence, organization, unity, transitions, topic sentences, paragraph structure – SEE, logical, academic and scholarly, embedded sources
60 pts. Content Development SLO #2 – debatable issue; enough content; rhetorical strategies; skillful use of summary, paraphrase, and quotation ...

Please hand a copy of the article with its references with your final draft.
Your summary will be exactly 250 words. It will do the following:

identify the purpose of the article
identify key supporting ideas,

Review Instructions for Essay 4--The Research Paper
The instructions and guides for the research paper are linked below.
In this class you have a rare opportunity to develop, revise/edit, and resubmit your work. Your revised exploratory paper (Essay 2) will become the introduction to your research paper. The revised position paper (Essay 3) will become the body. In addition, you will create a conclusion or "solutions" section for the final project. Note, however, that significant revisions are expected, so you should carefully review the edited draft and rubric evaluations for both essays 2/3 before you begin your final essay.
The final research papers must meet ALL of the minimum criteria for the assignment (in terms of structure, development, documentation style, quality and number of research sources, and writing skills) to be eligible for a score. In other words, you must receive a mark of "competent" in all of these areas to receive a grade for this assignment.
English 103: Essay 4—Research Paper
In the Research Paper, you will further develop, revise, and build upon the single perspective argument you have been developing all semester. Your final assignment should demonstrate your ability to apply the principles of argument discussed in the class throughout the semester and it should demonstrate your ability to use critical thinking when discussing a controversial issue.
Directions:
Prepare an 8-10 page research essay that builds upon the single perspective argument paper. The purpose of this assignment is to build upon what you have already created in the course. Therefore, the introduction of your research paper should be drawn from your Exploratory Paper, laying the foundation for the reader by presenting all sides of the issue, the exigence, etc. The body should be drawn from the Position Paper, which incorporates research to support your claim and sub-claims. Obviously, you cannot include the entire portion of each of the previous papers, and your final research paper should show that you’ve developed areas requiring development and made significant revisions to those sections of your papers requiring revision. The idea is to pull sections and points from previous essays. Use comments from me to revise those papers as you incorporate portions of them into this final project.
In addition to revising/developing the exploratory and position papers to serve as the introduction and body of the research paper, you will write an extended conclusion in which you focus on a viable solution and/or conclusion to the issue. For the conclusion, provide a means of solving the problem indicated by your topic. Consider the audience, establish common ground, and provide details for how to implement the solution. For example, if the position paper argued that bilingual education is necessary in California schools, the solution would discuss how to implement bilingual education programs in our California schools. You.

Understanding of the strengths & weaknesses of the prior research, how it is related to your current research: through a) problems; b) objectives, c)method & d) procedures. The literature review:
Prevents unwarranted (excess) duplication of what has already been done

2. The Literature Search Process
Take into consideration that all literature is not eligible for inclusion. You need to include only “scientific” literature (academic journals, formal research reports, university affiliated bulletins, monographs etc.)
The refereed or reviewed literature does not exclude that it is infallible or incorrect. Even The Wall Street Journal, and The Economist may be not appropriate sources for literature review, not speaking about “popular” publications

Some issues that could be considered for closer examination are the artists’
reasons for stylistic choices, intended meaning, audience, idea, or message of works, or, perhaps, historical or socio/political circumstances of either the making or the reception of each work.

Do not write a general comparison or contrast! You must eventually come up with a specific focus or assertion (argument), formulated into a

even if you have not really read it yet.

Your paper is to be about 6-8 pages long (not including your Bibliography), must be typed, double-spaced, 12 points, page margins one (1) inch all around. Papers written in any other format will not be accepted.

Topic:
Reports
are used to describe research findings, analyze those findings, and make recommendations. When writing a report, writers need to do more than present the facts. Writers also need to interpret their results and help readers understand the information they have collected. Research reports are designed to describe research methods, analyze findings, and make recommendations.
Directions:
For this assignment, write a 4-5 page Research Report in which you explore
a controversial, still evolving topic related to digital
citizenship or using technology/
the internet (see list below).

REQUIREMENTS RESEARCH PROJECTNow its time to begin (two) major .docxsodhi3
REQUIREMENTS RESEARCH PROJECT
Now it's time to begin (two) major writing assignments: 1) the Focused Annotated Bibliography and 2) the Research Paper assignments. The Focused Annotated Bibliography is the research for the final research paper; therefore, you need to provide a "focus," a purpose statement that will become your thesis for the paper. Make sure you use correct MLA style for both papers. Directions for both assignments are in the course content; I suggest that you read all directions, example, etc. before beginning the bibliography assignment. Also read "How to Write about Literature" and "How to do Research" in the course content.
Requirements Specific directions, guides and examples are in Unit One: “Course Resources & Writing Assignments” in the Content. Read Unit One before beginning this assignment. Due Date: check the course calendar in the Syllabus and Start Items in the course content
Clear focus or thesis that is supported with examples, quotes and paraphrases from both primary and secondary sources.
6-8 pages in length, not counting the Works Cited page
MLA documentation style
Typed and double-spaced, 12 point font such as Times New Roman
Written in Standard English, free of grammatical and spelling errors
Use at least five scholarly sources; the best databases are: JSTOR, MLA, and Literary Reference Center. If an article isn’t available in our library, use interlibrary loan. You can order interlibrary loan articles online on the library’s website. Articles will be delivered to your email address.
Please note that you may or may not use all the sources cited in your Annotated Bibliography, which is part of your preliminary research. Whether you use a source depends on your thesis or purpose.
A word of caution: do not use non-scholarly sources or any online sources, especially Wikipedia or Sparknotes. If you rely on these sources, you will fail the assignment.
If you plagiarize, you will receive a zero for the assignment and may fail the class.
I will only accept Word files; do not use PDF.
Do not use online bibliography help, services that supposedly put your citations in correct MLA style – these sources are not accurate or reliable. You are responsible for understanding and implementing correct MLA style in your citations and in your papers.
INSTRUCTIONS FOR RESEARCH PAPER (PART TWO)
READ & EXTRACTED From UNIT 1
The Research Paper Assignment What is a Research Paper? In this class, the research paper is defined as a literary analysis, (see my handout on how to write a literary analysis in this module), a paper that explains and interprets a specific idea about one of the texts assigned in the course. Remember that you are using the primary source, the text, to support a specific reading – to do this process, you must do a close reading of your text. This involves finding evidence from the primary text to support your argument, your claim or thesis. You are also required to use scholarly eviden ...

Essay #3 Argument Paper Proposal
In this 2-3 page paper, you will propose your topic and approach for Essay #4. Your goal is to
convince the audience (your professor) that you have a strong idea for your final argument essay.
Ultimately, your goal is to convince the reader that you have something important and relevant
to argue related to your topic. Topic can either be “How Does Language Influence Our
World?” or “Has the Internet Destroyed Privacy?”
Proposal Sections
• Introduction: You will select a theme from Part 5 of Everything’s an Argument (pages
xxx-xxxiv) and read all corresponding articles. Your proposal will outline for the reader
the primary arguments, agreements, disagreements, unresolved questions, controversies,
and tensions related to your theme. The introduction should provide any relevant
background information on your theme and convince the reader that your theme is worthy
of analysis. (Note: you are synthesizing arguments, not providing a list of article
summaries.)
• Project Proposal: ***(This is the main part of your proposal.)***In this section you will
specifically write about your proposed argument (or questions) related to the theme. Your
job is to convince the reader that you thoroughly understand the issues and have an
important argument to contribute to the conversation. See Everything’s an Argument
pages 300-305 for more tips.
• Project Sources: In order to enhance your argument you will find at least three credible
outside sources (not from the book) related to your theme. List them in MLA style and
provide 1-3 sentences on why the source is useful.
• Project Timeline: You will provide a timeline for completion of the project with specific
steps, including research, drafting, peer review, and revision. Your syllabus provides
certain mid-project due dates, but you will want to get even more specific related to your
own personal schedule and theme.
Characteristics of Strong Proposals
• Are specific and complex
• Go beyond stating the obvious (e.g. homelessness is bad)
• Are supported by reasoning and evidence
• Anticipate objections the audience will have
• Address the complexity of issues
• Acknowledge weaknesses or limitations in the argument
• Engage current conversations and discourses surrounding the topic
• Demonstrate the significance of the main claim as related to the topic
• Addresses implications of the argument

Poetry Explication Assignment Fall 2016The following regulation.docxharrisonhoward80223
Poetry Explication Assignment: Fall 2016
The following regulations apply:
· Select any poem of your choosing that has not been discussed in class or assigned as homework. Even if you use a poem that is in our anthology, please attach a copy to your work as you will need to annotate it. It must be at least 14 lines long.
· Read the discussion about responding to literature included in Chapter 27 (684-718). Since this is NOT a research assignment, we will be using the model papers in that chapter as guides for how to select a topic and also create a thesis about a poem. You are being asked to use the critical skills you are learning to create your own interpretation of a poem.
· Annotate the poem (see sample). Underscore and define unfamiliar vocabulary, note formal elements, identify the speaker, situation, etc.
· Answer the questions labeled “Formalist Questions.”
· Also answer any other set of questions listed in two categories. Select one category of analysis and answer all the questions in that category; repeat the process for another category.
· Begin drafting your paper, going slowly, so that it conforms to the requirements mentioned on page 704 regarding a “coherent reading.” Your essay must comment on each line of the poem and it must include an introductory paragraph that provides an overview and thesis statement.
· Your draft should be 2-3 pages long and make many textual references.
· Please include a “Works Cited” page. While you are not required to do additional research, be sure to cite any other sources that you use in your paper.
· Rehearse reading the poem aloud, noting the time that it takes you to recite it. Be sure that you look up unfamiliar vocabulary and proper names so that you can recite them correctly.
· Prepare a short lecture about the poem based on the work that you have done and any share other relevant remarks about it with your peers. It must be 3-5 minutes in length.
I will not accept any late work. Anyone who is missing from class on peer review day will not be given credit for this assignment. Incomplete drafts will be downgraded significantly.
RESEARCH-BASED POSITION PAPER
Essay Topic: Contemporary (current) Global Issue
For the group presentation all groups did their research on a global issue that threatens the world as
a whole. For this essay assignment you can either work on the same issue and conduct more
research, or you can pick an entirely new topic to write a well-researched paper that meets the
requirements listed below.
This is not a group assignment. All students are required to complete this assignment individually.
Assignment Overview
Write a well-developed argumentative research paper on a contemporary (current) global issue. The
paper should be a work of critical analysis, meaning that it should formulate an original and
compelling argument about the subject matter and should support that argument with relevant
evidence and sound reasoning. The centr.
Proposal EssayThis assignment has three interrelated goals1. To.docxsimonlbentley59018
Proposal Essay
This assignment has three interrelated goals:
1. To help you develop the necessary skills to create a class A proposal, considering context, research questions, sources, timeline, and larger implications.
1. To give you practice working with the Research Proposal as an academic genre.
1. To provide an opportunity for working on stylistics and effective academic discourse.
FORMAT:
Your essay should be at least FIVE FULL PAGES and in MLA FORMAT. Please include page numbers, a heading, in-text citations and a properly labeled and formatted works cited. You may use images in your draft if you wish – just please use them rhetorically,
not decoratively.
In addition, be sure to
cite any credible sources (textual or image-based) that you include in your draft and to include a bibliography/works cited at the end that includes a
minimum of five sources. These sources must come from the Dallas College database or Dallas College library. If not, there should be a reason why.
PROPOSAL REQUIREMENTS AND STRUCTURE
Your proposal should have a well thought out title and contain effective visual rhetoric as appropriate. It should be a traditional, linear Word document in MLA format. Make sure you are hitting the following parts within your essay (do not include subheadings. They are not needed):
Introduction.
This introduction should be designed to interest your reader in your topic and proposal and provide some historical/cultural context for your project. At the end of your introduction, include a tentative thesis to indicate to your reader that you are entering your project looking at your topic through a critical, analytic lens -- this thesis can state your intentions, but it SHOULD NOT BE IN FIRST PERSON.
A good formula for an introduction is context + problem/complication + proposed argument or research question. Each stage in this formula should be a few sentences long.
Body
In your body paragraphs, make sure that you are addressing the problem and its solution. MORE SOLUTION THAN PROBLEM should be in this essay. What are you proposing? What are you offering to the world?
Conclusion.
In your conclusion, address the "So What?" of this research. That is, why does what you are investigating matter as more than an academic exercise? Why should your audience want to read it? Why does it matter?
Works cited
When you cite sources, you'll also need to have a works cited at the end of the proposal, with the citations in MLA format. Any parenthetical citations in the text itself should also follow MLA guidelines. You can find more help on in-text citations and works cited format through the Dallas College website or Purdue OWL.
EVALUATION CRITERIA
At a minimum, there needs to be some content for each of the sections listed above. Students who submit drafts that represent very little effort and are pronouncedly incomplete will receive a ½ grade (i.e., A- to .

Assignment 2: Research-Based Argument Essay (Part 2)
• Word count: 2,800-3,100 words / ~ 8-9 double-spaced pages
• Font 11-12, Arial, Times New Roman, Calibri, or similar
• At least one primary source and four secondary sources
• Contains formal references, a bibliography and your Writer’s Letter
• Submitted by direct message to me on Slack, by Word Document
• Time needed to complete: about 5-6 hours, highly recommended to spread
over a few days
• Peer-review of first drafts in pairs occurs in Week 13 (May 3rd to 10th)
• Due in Week 15, by May 20th at the latest
(this is a strict deadline, due to the deadline I’m given for submitting final
course grades)
Description
So, here we are: your final project! This is the completed research-based argument
essay that you have already worked on substantially by completing Assignment 1, your
rhetorical analysis. This exercise is fundamental: you’ll be asked to write argumentative essays
very frequently in college. It’s also an amazing skill to have for your future life: you’ll know
how to efficiently analyze any material, critically question things that are presented as truths to
you, and you’ll know how to make a powerful, professionally back-up argument. It doesn’t have
to be tedious: by following the step-by-step method you started for Assignment 1, you have
already spread out the work.
Hopefully you’ve chosen a topic and a medium that you’re deeply interested in, so that
you find enjoyment in your project. Topping up the research you’ve done for Assignment 1 with
the two additional Reflective Annotated Bibliography sheets from Week 12, you may note
that your thesis changes slightly, or your topic framing or approach shifts. That’s complete fine
and normal: it shows you’ve deepened your reflection since first working on your topic,
receiving feedback from me and your peers, and it also allows you to update the research angle
you’re interested in exploring with this final project. An academic will frequently take weeks or
even months to complete a peer-reviewed article like the ones you used for your RefAnnBibs,
adding ideas, rearranging the structure of their argument, and refining their thesis as they go.
Directions
As a reminder, to write a complete, well-presented essay, you need four things: a specific
topic, selected sources, selected evidence from your sources, and most of all, your own ideas
(and a willingness to proofread!). Following is the detailed step-by-step method you’ve already

TOPIC OR SUBJECT MATTER
You must choose two works of art from distinct geographic locations or time periods. After comparing

(finding differences) the two, you must come up with a concludive thesis statement, which you will argue in your paper. Art history papers are presentation of findings. Your thesis statement must be announced (not just implied) in the introduction!
Some issues that could be considered for closer examination are the artists’
reasons for stylistic choices, intended meaning, audience, idea, or message of works, or, perhaps, historical or socio/political circumstances of either the making or the reception of each work.

Students who submit drafts that represent very little effort and are pronouncedly incomplete will receive a ½ grade (i.e., A- to .

over a few days

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

Essay III – Historical Analysis Research Essay: (200 points)
Due dates: Proposal/thesis/brainstorming notes:
03/06
Pre-write / annotated bibliography 03/13
Draft (full length): 03/27
Peer Review: 03/27
Final Draft: 04/03
The final submission includes all pre-writing material,
including notes on research, a hard copy submitted to the
instructor and to Turnitin.com.
Note: Grades for papers with high rates of “similarity” will be
penalized severely.
Analyzing historical events and their consequences is common
research practice. In this essay, choose an historical event that
is interesting to you, one that you may even be passionate
about. Choose a topic that is debatable and has extensive
sourcing. Prior knowledge of the event may be useful, even
necessary. This assignment will require that you conduct a
reasonable search for documentation and support. Start early
and keep good notes. Start with an internet and library search.
Good pre-writing protocol requires that you take notes as you
read and that you document your sources accurately. Develop a
thesis statement that is narrow enough to cover in a short (1700
– 2100) word paper and debatable—make a claim of value, fact,
or policy.
Choosing a topic:
You may deal with various aspects of the topic: artistic, geo-
2. political, scientific, moral, aesthetic, cultural, social, or
economic. The following suggestions on the attached list may
help you choose a topic.
You may wish to take a conservative or a liberal stance on a
topic. Be sure that the essay is thesis driven. The essay should
be developed according to the methods discussed in class and in
the textbook. The paper should be 6 - 8 pages. The paper is
worth 200 points. You will be responsible for all phases of the
writing process. Research is required (6+ sources cited;
websites/magazine/newspaper articles are OK but much less
valuable).
Directions:
Write a 6 to 8-page historical analysis research paper (including
a Works Cited page) in MLA format on the topic of an historical
event. Follow the writing process as discussed in class and in
the textbook. Be prepared to show every step of the process in
class. Show evidence of brainstorming, note taking, outline and
rough draft. Write a thesis driven analysis of the topic. The
thesis, preferably a divided thesis, should make a strong
statement or claim about the event. Write a multi-paragraph
essay analyzing the historical event that you have chosen. The
essay should be expository, with some description and narration
where appropriate.

Imagine that you have found Isamu Noguchi’s plaster models
and other materials associated with
his proposal for a memorial to the victims of the bombing of
Hiroshima. The models had been lost
for decades. You tell the Curator of Japanese Art at the Museum
of Fine Arts Houston about your
discovery, and the curator, Akito Tanaka, suggests that you
submit a proposal for an exhibit that
broadens the context of Noguchi’s models. You have already
found one argumentative source about
the models, “The Rejection of Isamu Noguchi's Hiroshima
Cenotaph,” by Bert Winther, which is
available through the Academic Search Premier database. You
5. can access that database here.
Mr. Tanaka is requiring that you find a background source, two
exhibits, and one more
argumentative source to round out your research before you
write your proposal (an explanation
for those sources is below). Mr. Tanaka suggests that there are
several ways you could add context
to Noguchi’s models:
1. Investigate the history of memorials
2. Look further into Japanese ancient art discussed in Winther’s
article, like the haniwa.
3. Investigate Noguchi’s art
4. Look into the art of New York or Japanese artists who
worked at the same time as him.
5. Research ways that other artists have explored some of the
themes that Noguchi did, such
as: mother goddesses or nuclear war
6. Any other connection you can think of
Mr. Tanaka strongly suggests that you only investigate one
connection, and certainly not all of
these. He reminds you that the word count for the proposal must
be between 500-800.
Your essay should include:
● An introduction that briefly lays out the problem, summarizes
your summaries of the two
argumentative sources, and introduces your thesis. (I
recommend that you write the
introduction after you have written most (or all) of the rest of
the paper.)
6. ● A paragraph explaining the background/context. You can
draw upon the background source
and the argumentative sources here.
● A paragraph summarizing the first argumentative source.
● A paragraph summarizing the second argumentative source.
● A discussion paragraph that brings together your ideas about
the two exhibits and the two
argumentative sources (this may end up being more than one
paragraph)
● A separate works cited page (do not include this page in the
word count)
http://www.lonestar.edu/library/14627.htm
Explanations of sources:
Background source: A source, assumed to be noncontroversial,
used to provide context--what
writer and reader can stipulate as shared facts and information.
Exhibit: Documents, data, visual images, or other artifacts that
the writer analyzes.
Argument source: The conversation of critical views and
relevant scholarship surrounding the
writer’s question. Scholarly articles.
Rubric for the Research Paper
Your Research Paper should include an organized introduction
with a clear thesis, a

both argument sources,
and a discussion paragraph.
