An physical investigation into an mp3 speaker.
Create a specification for your product
Compare /contrast your product to a similar
another product (do not need need to own this
product)
Material/component analysis
Manufacturing analysis
Environmental analysis
Quality control and quality assurance analysis
To start this, you will need to take apart, dismantle,
disassemble 1 MP3 speaker, this should be started
next lesson.

Given a MP3 electronic kit
3 different design ideas (annotation regarding,
materials, processes, finishes, construction,
dimensions, etc)
Evaluation of concepts
Development of final concept including
modelling to test aspects of final idea
‘Final design idea is significantly different and
improved from previous design ideas’
Evaluation
Engineering drawings (you will make this final
developed concept, using all the manufacturing
processes in the workshop – meaning, your
concepts should include manufacturing
processes such as milling, turning, wood lathe,
heat metal treatment... Using a range materials
etc)
Christmas, returning in January prepared for
mock exams, and making your mp3 speaker after
that

You will design a portable MP3 speaker, using off the shelf components.
Initial specification
The product must include at least 3 materials (wood, metal & plastic)
The product must be manufactured using the
Centre lathe
Wood lathe
Milling machine
Laser cutter
Vacuum former
Appropriate hand tools
Heat treatment
Pillar drill
Sanders
Band saw
(3D Printer?)
In creating your own design brief and specification, think:
Who is your target market?
Appropriate styling /design choices?
Ergonomics/anthropometrics?
Is the product multi-functional?
Is it desk standing or floor standing or wall mounted?

  • 18. Initial brief You will design a portable MP3 speaker, using off the shelf components. Initial specification The product must include at least 3 materials (wood, metal & plastic) The product must be manufactured using the Centre lathe Wood lathe Milling machine Laser cutter Vacuum former Appropriate hand tools Heat treatment Pillar drill Sanders Band saw (3D Printer?) In creating your own design brief and specification, think: Who is your target market? Appropriate styling /design choices? Ergonomics/anthropometrics? Is the product multi-functional? Is it desk standing or floor standing or wall mounted? CHAPTER 2 PRODUCT DESIGN
