11. Hosted vs. Locally Managed
• 73 (71.6%) of respondents use a
hosted service offered by a vendor or
consortia
• 29 (28.4%) are locally managed
• Hosted services: Digital Commons
BePress and OCLC’s ContentDM
• Locally managed: DSpace, ContentDM

14. Decision factors
• Content being managed
• Requirements of the content
• Restrictions due to the content
• User functionality
• Technical philosophy (move to hosted)
• Technical support
• Customer support
• Preservation functionality
• Cost
Hot Topics: DuraSpace Community November 12, 2014 Webinar Series
15. Advantages: Local vs. Hosted
• Locally managed
– Possibly cheaper
– “Complete” local control
• Hosted
– Easily scalable
– Pay as you go/use
– Higher availability of services to run
over content
– Limited technical expertise required
Hot Topics: DuraSpace Community November 12, 2014 Webinar Series
16. Disadvantages: Local vs. Hosted
• Locally managed
– Locked in to hardware choice
– Expensive/difficult to scale storage up/down
– Tech experience
• Hosted
– Unknown changes at any time to:
• Pricing for storage
• Services offered
• Location of storage
• Service level agreement
Hot Topics: DuraSpace Community November 12, 2014 Webinar Series
17. Keep in Mind: Local
• How do you enable content backups and
preservation workflow/policies?
• How do you provide geographic distribution of
content?
• How do you ensure all copies are kept
synchronized?
• How do you enable quick retrieval and
restoration of some/all of your content in
event of data loss/recovery scenarios?
• How do you ensure the health of all copies on
an ongoing basis?
Hot Topics: DuraSpace Community November 12, 2014 Webinar Series
18. Keep in Mind: Hosted
• How do you transfer content to the vendor?
• How do you determine and implement a local
“workflow to the vendor’s system”?
• How and what preparations need to take place
in order for content/collections to be ready for
transfer to the vendor?
• Proprietary formats?
• Ease of migrating content to local option in
future?
• Penalties for content download/retrieval?
• Fees for early termination of contract?

• IMLS funded research project Digital
POWRR (Preserving digital Objects With
Restricted Resources)
• Created tool grid of open source and
vendor options
• Assessed on a spectrum: ingest,
processing, access, storage,
maintenance
• Recommendations based on institution
size, capacity, staresources

20. POWRR Findings
• Veryyy brief summary:
– Institutions with significantly limited resources:
combination of local open source tools for processing
content and free hosted service for storage
– Institutions with some financial resources but limited
staff resources: hosted service or membership
organization like MetaArchive
– Institutions with some staff resources but limited
financial resources: local open source tools for
processing with a hosted service for storage
– Institutions with both resources: likely an all-in-one
hosted service or membership service is attractive

Editor's Notes
Literature search—the CLIR sponsored Census of Institutional Repositories in the United States, led by Karen Markey of the University of Michigan which provided the baseline list of benefits of an IR along with the future features. The report also found that few if any non-ARL libraries had implemented a repository
Nykanen in 2011 used the Census as the base of her study and surveyed a specific group of non-ARL libraries, again finding limited uptake on repositories. What as interesting in her study was she found that non-ARL libraries were using the repositories for undergraduate research. I combined the benefits of both these studies as well as other surveys to create this 2014 survey
Unlike the 2007 study which was quantitative research this is market research, however it is the largest survey result of this community to date.
We identified the following questions for the study.
Are non ARL academic libraries are involved in the management of institutional content including faculty and student created content, library created/acquired content; and if the repository is locally managed or hosted;
Responders’ perceptions about the benefits of an institutional repository/digital repository (IR/DR);
Current services used by responders to support their IR/DR initiatives;
Responders’ future needs and plans for IR/DR services and software;
Define Information Technology staffing used to support IR/DR;
Based on the benefits statements in the 2007 Census, we also asked questions regarding digital preservation
Key questions were asked of 145 institutions across all types of academic libraries including two and four year colleges, masters and doctorate granting universities. Largest number of respondents were from 4 year degree awarding colleges, with an equl number of responses from masters and doctorate granting institutions. We had a 18 community college respondents.
