Andy Warhol was an American artist and director known for his unique pop art style. He produced many iconic works in the 1960s that remain relevant today. One such work is Marilyn Diptych, a silkscreen painting depicting Marilyn Monroe. The painting uses bright colors on the left side that gradually fade on the right side to represent Monroe's public image contrasted with her personal struggles. By repeating and manipulating Monroe's image through silkscreening with different colors, Warhol was able to comment on celebrity and the artificial nature of fame.
1. Andy Warhol was a director, artist, and a photographer that was based in America. He was
known for his unique style and makingstories through art. Since we are looking for the
political, social, and cultural design, it is just perfect to pick his works to have research on
as he produced a lot iconic art that was still relevant up to this day. Doing a research on
his controversial works will help me to put story on my own design.Apart from his work
being unique from the rest he also conducted a new set of style in the field of design.
Since him being a director and artist at the same time, he has combined those two
profession to create and tell story in one design. Being a director created pathway to be
associated with some iconic personalities in the field of politics or hollywood. He uses
variety of colours which has defined the art era of his time which was called “Pop Art”. His
creativity didn’t only stop with himbeing artistic, he has also conveyedthe meaningof
being a true artist. To tell and create something that will influentand go down through the
history of design and art.
On the art above was called Marilyn Ditych, the subject was no other than the famous star
in the pop culture Marilyn Monroe. Although we all know that she is a movie star, the
subject matter wasn’t her itself. Since it is a two-piece artwork, it has created message to
the audiences and made it more meaningful. The subject was all about the said artist’s
personal issues. We could all see the bright colours on the left artwork gradually having a
strong contrast and colour from left to right, which they said that it represent Manilyn
Monroe’s image in public. On the right artwork is a desaturated image of Monroe with
repetitive print as well just like on the left artwork, but the different was instead of the
2. image getting clearer, it is slowly fading which tackled the real subject matter of the
artwork; Marilyn Monroe’s personal issues.
Andy Warhol have used mixed media on creating this piece. By using a primary source
image which was took by him, he repeatedly silkscreen the image using different colours
of ink. I love how it can be abstract and direct to the point at the same time. The sense of
revelation is what I like about the image, that colours and sharpness of image can convey
different meaning and emotion. The repetitive printing of the image played the big role on
this piece to create more meaning. Andy was starting on his silkscreen painting
techniques when Marilyn died from overdose, from that Andy took the opportunity to
make the actress be remembered in the most aesthetic way. By doing his eulogy through
art.
By analysing the whole art piece, I believe that Andy Warhol use purple colour for
Monroe’s skin tone on purpose. As we can see, Andy kept the blonde hair that Marilyn has
on the art piece, but he has put purple tone on Marilyn skin, and i think that this represent
the fake form of Marilyn that she has been showingto the public. It was colourful, but fake.
The artwork on the left was composed of happy colours but it made me feel that there is
something wrongon the art work, something that wasn’t right.Which was the whole
message of the artwork.
Marilyn’s eyes on the image was heavy lidded eyes to connote seductive image, we could
also noticed a forced smile. There is harsh colouring on the artwork to follow the trend
style of that era, or what they called Pop Art. The process of silkcreen flattens Monroe’s
face which also helps to adjust the contrast of the image and to conduct the ghostly effect.
With the process of silkscreen printing, Andy Warhol was able to put different colours on
his artwork and manipulate the image without the digital use.
By this, I conclude that to create a masterpiece, you have to put meaning on it so it would
only be composed by shape, colours, or image. It also contains story that will go down with
the history.
