This document outlines NOAA's nearshore strategies for South Puget Sound. It discusses how nearshore systems are physically dynamic and operate at large scales, influenced by watersheds and drift cells. A landform-based framework is proposed to plan restoration at the scale of physical systems. A gradient analysis approach is suggested to identify sites based on their potential for ecosystem services and level of degradation. South Puget Sound is identified as a key opportunity area due to its many high potential inlet protection sites and loss of barrier embayments. The document acknowledges further questions around sediment management and inlet functions that require more study.
