a Prototype for Smarter & Greener
Waste Management Process
Using Internet Of Things
Just In Time Dumping Goals…
1. To use technology to make waste management more efficient and
green.
2. We believe that data talks; so we have incorporated metrics and
data collection to measure the impact our solutions have and to
gain further insight into ways we can improve waste management
processes.
Waste Management now - Problem
Currently dump trucks are sent out on a scheduled basis
(weekly). What if the dumpster is only 25% full? This causes
WASTE in many forms and is not a green approach!
1. Human Resource Waste - Sending people out to these
specific dumpsters that may not need immediate servicing,
2. Wasting $expensive, Diesel fuel, these trucks get only 5 miles
per gallon!
3. Therefore, it’s also a waste of Energy!
4. adding more traffic congestion, and wear & tear to our roads,
5. Adding more miles, wear & tear/maintenance costs to the
dump trucks
6. Creating more risks and costs for insuring these expensive
vehicles,
7. adding unnecessary pollution to the air
More Problems
Why not collect the MAXIMUM
amount of waste,
while saving money, resources and
being GREEN?
Solution 1: Just In Time Dumping in Action!
Dumpster Full
ALARM ->
SMS &
email Alerts!
JIT Dumping Prototype
Just In Time Dumping Solution
a) Integrate a Level Detecting sensor(s) that can detect when the dumpster is at
80% (or other specified amount) full. This sensor will also indicate a time stamp of
when this event occurred. [Sensor 1]
b) Integrate a location sensor for all the dumpsters, this can tell the sanitation
dispatch employees and garbage truck drivers where the dumpsters are located;
also useful if these dumpsters are ever moved or stolen. [Sensor 2]
c) These two sensors will provide the location of the dumpster, the time and date
that the sensor triggered that the dumpster is xx% full.
Just In Time Dumping Solution
d) The dumpsters will also have a weight sensor, that will be used for Sanitation
Metrics and cost per unit weight to pay the landfill owners for disposal. If recycling
is added to this process Diversion calculations can be automated, this indicates
how much waste was diverted from the landfill & is a key KPI for recycling
effectiveness.
e) If triggered after working hours, the xx% full sensor will send an Alert to the
smart routing software that will be used to create the most efficient route to
collect this for the next day. As well as a detailed map & instructions for the truck
drivers to follow for the most efficient routing.
Just In Time Dumping Solution
f) The garbage trucks will be equipped with location sensors on their trucks.
g) If a Dumpster Full Alert happens during the period that the garbage trucks are out
working by using the location sensor in the trucks, the software can determine
which garbage truck currently out in the field is closest to that alarmed
dumpster location.
Just In Time Dumping Solution
h) Garbage trucks have a lever that the operator pushes/pulls to compact the trash in the
cargo area of the truck. When the range of motion of this lever becomes less, this
indicates that the cargo area is becoming fuller. There can be a range of motion
sensor on this lever that can detect if the truck has enough room available to hold
the contents of another dumpster. [Sensor 4]
i) If the range of motion sensor indicates that the garbage truck has room,
& the truck is close to the dumpster, then that crew will be notified to go to
that dumpster for emptying.
j) Else the next closest garbage truck that has available cargo room will be
notified to go empty that dumpster

Minimal Viable Product (MVP)to begin Trials
a) Connect to the “Cloud” twice per day, 12 hours apart.
a1) send the following data when you connect:
a1.1) fill level
a1.2) weight
a1.3) location
a1.4) time stamp
• Therefore, latency is NOT important,
• High-Bandwidth is NOT important.
More design criteria / Wish List
b) Low energy consumption possibly using a "battery”,
solar, wind, w/ a long life span (5 years)?
c) Final solution should be in a ruggedized enclosure,
but still have access to transport method chosen.
d) Inexpensive to build & scale.
e) Connected to a Cloud platform for software processing, data analytics
& storage
Design Criteria for Sensor –
 It must by hardened for high TX heat, high humidity, freezing temps.
 Rugged, long life
 Mass Producible
 Cost effective, w/ metrics on ROI
 Low Power, Battery, Solar, Wind Operated?
 Low cost RF transport w/ long range.
 Proven cost savings. Low Operating costs.
 Proven environmental benefits.
 More Reliable & Efficient than current method.
