Safety
 Safety precautions to be adhered onboard when following operations
are carried out.
 Fuelling
 Hot work ( Welding, Cutting etc.)
 Tank cleaning (confined spaces)
 Lifting heavy weights by cranes, derricks etc
Fueling
 Safety precautions to be taken during fueling are.
 Post fire sentries.
 Check samples of fuel.
 Do not carry out hot work in any case.
 Hoist the flag Bravo.
 Post sufficient men to stop fuel bowser at any time.
 Pay close supervision when a fueling.
 Take soundings at appropriate fine intervals.
 Fuel hose should be put to the bottom of the tank.
 No smoking boards to be displayed.
 Fill up the tanks up to the 95% & of the level.
Hot Work
 Following precautions are necessary during hot work. (Welding and
burning operations )
 Ensure there is no combustible material surrounding areas.
 Disconnect batteries
 Check and be aware of the other side of the partition, bulkhead,
etc.
 Post a fire sentry in close proximity with suitable fire extinguishers.
 Ensure proper ventilation is provided out in confined place.
Hot Work
 Stand by the first aid party throughout.
 Ensure there is no fuel /lub oil on the ground/vicinity.
 Inform OOD whenever hot work is carried out.
 Be ready to operate fire main system.
 Welding sentry should be provided for each welding operations
7
Tank Cleaning
 Debunk fuel and allow ventilating for 24 hrs with exhaust blowers.
 Check for toxic/ flammable gas freeness.
 Whenever one person is sent into the tank, there should be
another person outside the tank near the manhole.
 The person going inside should go with a life line.
Safety
Lifting Weights by Crane
 Men on the ground should wear safety gears.
 Weight should be under the safe working load (SWL).
 When weight lifted up there should be no men underneath of the
hanging weight.
 Ropes or lines should be tied to the weight for handling when lifted
up.
Entering Confined Spaces
 When entering any confined space such as fuel tanks, cable room etc,
there are particular instructions to be followed.
 All compartments which have been hermetically-sealed for a period
of time are to be regarded as harmful to life. Hence, every person
concerned is to be made familiar with these instructions in order to
prevent occurrence of accidents.
Entering Confined Spaces
 Naked lights:
 When opening up a confined space, no naked light is to be inside the or
within 20 feet of the opening until it has been ascertained by means of a
safety lamp that it does not contain any explosive gases.
 Ventilating:
 An air fan with hose is to be used freely for ventilating with trash air
before men are sent down and while they are at work. In case of a
compartment where it has not been opened for considerable period, a
good current of air to be applied for at least 24 hrs time before entering to
the space. Prior its being proved free for dangerous gases, the entrance is
to be roped off and a notice posted at the entrance.
 Before entering compartment the test for inflammable gases to be done.
Entering Confined Spaces
 Ventilating:
 Greater caution is required when the compartment has one exit.
 No man is to enter a compartment which is not known to free from
dangerous gases without a life line. Communication is always to be
kept up between the men in the compartment and those are at
outside.
 Apart from these instructions there are other factors to be
considered in special cases where tanks having hazardous various
substances
