A young woman, Laura, was hired as a copy editor for one of the many journals produced by the company. Seven other employees worked on this team editing this Journal, including a senior editor named Tim. Laura had worked there for about a month when she and her co-workers went for a happy-hour after work. Everybody had a great time and had consumed a fair amount of alcohol. When everybody left the bar to head home, Tim, who had been secretly attracted to Laura since she started work at the Journal, hailed a cab and offered to share the ride with Laura. Laura accepted the offer. Once she was inside the cab, Tim then suddenly made an aggressive sexual advance toward her. Horrified, Laura pushed him away and told him to get out of the cab. Mortified, Tim slinked out of the cab. The next day, Laura came to work with some apprehension. How would she deal with Tim? Would the cab incident affect her job? Although Tim did not supervise her, would he try to get her fired? Since this day, Tim and Laura have all been showing aggressive behavior at work. Laura does not want to work with Tim.
On the other hand, Tim has constantly mistreated Laura since he is afraid that Laura might open up to her fellow employees or even superiors which would get him fired. The two have been continuously arguing, and they rarely want to see each other in the office. However, most office people do not know why there is a conflict between the two since they did not witness the incident (Luria, 1932).
2. Have you been striving earnestly to resolve this dispute or giving only partial efforts to reconcile?
I have put all my efforts into trying to resolve the conflict between this two. This is because, since their conflict began, the two employees' work productivity has been very low, and, in most cases, their duties even end up not being well performed. For this reason, it was essential to find a solution that will resolve the conflict as much as possible to avoid further deterioration in employee performance.
3. What questions, doubts, or fears do you have because of this dispute?
The question that I have in this dispute is what happened between the two employees, and the doubt I have is that both of them will be able to work in the same team even after resolving the conflict. The one fear that I have is that if the case is not solved as soon as possible, one of the employees might resign from their job.

The main way that we play defense in logic is by guarding against fallacies and biases. Fallacies are common forms of inference that are not good; they do not adequately support their conclusions. The best way to learn to avoid them is to learn to identify them so that you will see when they are occurring.
Since there are literally hundreds of fallacies, we will only have time to discuss a small few. However, we will focus on some of the most common, and readers can go on to learn more, both from our book as well as other online resources. Possibly the most commonly committed fallacy is Begging the Question (by assuming a main point at issue). Here is a nice explanation:
Circular reasoning is an extreme version of begging the question in which a premise is identical to the conclusion.
Here are some examples of each:
1. Don’t listen to that candidate; he’s untrustworthy.
2. You shouldn’t bet on that horse; it’s going to lose.
3. Don’t buy a Mac since PCs are better.
4. Marijuana should not be legalized because that would be disastrous.
5. You should join my religion because it’s the true one.
6. That food is bad for you because it is unhealthy.How to Avoid Begging the Question
In order to avoid this fallacy it is necessary to use premises that do not assume the point at issue, but rather that are based in principles and observations upon which both parties could in principle agree.

It seems as though we are living in a time where it has become politically correct to throw low-blows and have unfair fights just to take the lead or stand out the most. In political races we see this all the time, politicians talk bad, make accusations on the other, and dig up any dirt they can find. Even if it is just the extended family members of the other. To me the more one political candidate throws dirt or low blows it makes them look bad. Not the face of America. Even professionals in the media have changed their ways of communication from professional to more laid back. I was once watching the news and one individual reported and said that the victim was "leaving his baby-momma house". So many viewers called into to the Viewers Voice and complained about how Shawn Rabb has reported the news unprofessionally, he is ghetto, and so much more. However the term "baby-momma" is more common than "mother of my children". Its the language of the culture that is changing. Working as a Juvenile Detention Officer I hear all types of synonyms. Some I used as a kid and others I need the meaning of and if they cant tell me what it means they can not use it.

A young woman, Laura, was hired as a copy editor for one of the many journals produced by the company. Seven other employees worked on this team editing this Journal, including a senior editor named Tim. Laura had worked there for about a month when she and her co-workers went for a happy-hour after work. Everybody had a great time and had consumed a fair amount of alcohol. When everybody left the bar to head home, Tim, who had been secretly attracted to Laura since she started work at the Journal, hailed a cab and offered to share the ride with Laura. Laura accepted the offer. Once she was inside the cab, Tim then suddenly made an aggressive sexual advance toward her. Horrified, Laura pushed him away and told him to get out of the cab. Mortified, Tim slinked out of the cab. The next day, Laura came to work with some apprehension. How would she deal with Tim? Would the cab incident affect her job? Although Tim did not supervise her, would he try to get her fired? Since this day, Tim and Laura have all been showing aggressive behavior at work. Laura does not want to work with Tim.
On the other hand, Tim has constantly mistreated Laura since he is afraid that Laura might open up to her fellow employees or even superiors which would get him fired. The two have been continuously arguing, and they rarely want to see each other in the office. However, most office people do not know why there is a conflict between the two since they did not witness the incident (Luria, 1932).
2. Have you been striving earnestly to resolve this dispute or giving only partial efforts to reconcile?
I have put all my efforts into trying to resolve the conflict between this two. This is because, since their conflict began, the two employees' work productivity has been very low, and, in most cases, their duties even end up not being well performed. For this reason, it was essential to find a solution that will resolve the conflict as much as possible to avoid further deterioration in employee performance.
3. What questions, doubts, or fears do you have because of this dispute?
The question that I have in this dispute is what happened between the two employees, and the doubt I have is that both of them will be able to work in the same team even after resolving the conflict. The one fear that I have is that if the case is not solved as soon as possible, one of the employees might resign from their job.

Circular reasoning is an extreme version of begging the question in which a premise is identical to the conclusion.
Here are some examples of each:
1. Don’t listen to that candidate; he’s untrustworthy.
2. You shouldn’t bet on that horse; it’s going to lose.
3. Don’t buy a Mac since PCs are better.
4. Marijuana should not be legalized because that would be disastrous.
5. You should join my religion because it’s the true one.

It seems as though we are living in a time where it has become politically correct to throw low-blows and have unfair fights just to take the lead or stand out the most. In political races we see this all the time, politicians talk bad, make accusations on the other, and dig up any dirt they can find. Even if it is just the extended family members of the other. To me the more one political candidate throws dirt or low blows it makes them look bad. Not the face of America. Even professionals in the media have changed their ways of communication from professional to more laid back. I was once watching the news and one individual reported and said that the victim was "leaving his baby-momma house". So many viewers called into to the Viewers Voice and complained about how Shawn Rabb has reported the news unprofessionally, he is ghetto, and so much more. However the term "baby-momma" is more common than "mother of my children". Its the language of the culture that is changing. Working as a Juvenile Detention Officer I hear all types of synonyms. Some I used as a kid and others I need the meaning of and if they cant tell me what it means they can not use it.

- 2. 1. To understand what hate speech is, how and why it is used, and how to respond to hateful content online. 1. Students are able to distinguish between appropriate and inappropriate online behaviours and between free and hate speech. 2. Students can explain why someone might post hateful and intolerant content online. 3. Students demonstrate that they can respond effectively to hate speech and hateful and intolerant content online.
- 3. Hate speech is speech which attacks a person or group on the basis of their race, religion, sexual orientation or their physical or mental disability. Free speech is the right to voice and share your opinions and ideas freely and without fear of retaliation. vs
- 4. vs Complete the following tasks by answering in full sentences. 1. What makes a comment hate speech? 2. Is a negative opinion or nasty statement the same thing as hate speech? 3. If a nasty comment is directed at someone, rather than a general statement, does that make it different? 4. Why do we have hate speech laws? And free speech?
- 5. 1. Read through the nine statements on the slide. 2. Rank them in order of how much you agree with them. 1 = agree the most / 9 = agree the least
- 6. Consider your ideas in detail and answer the following questions. 1. What drives someone to post hate speech online? 2. How might they be feeling? 3. Why may they be feeling this way? 4. Does the fact they are posting it online change the way they might express their views? 5. Does online hate speech always reflect how the person posting it truly feels? 6. What are the different ways in which hate speech could impact on an individual? 7. How does it affect society as a whole?
- 7. Look at each case study on the right. • Label each case study with whether you think it is Hate Speech or free speech. • Explain your choice using the word ‘because’ in your answer. Case 1: You see comments under a social media post that racially abuse someone, making comments about their skin colour. CHL: What different actions could you take to respond to online hate speech? Mind map your ideas! Case 2: Someone comments under and online video saying it is ‘sexist and disgusting’. Case 3: A social media post threatens graphic violence against someone because they are gay.
- 8. Flag or Report Respond Block Ignore Counter with positivity
- 9. Note down your key learning from today: • Three things you can do to challenge online hate speech • Two considerations to keep in mind while taking this action (e.g. what are the consequences of your actions) • One question that you still have about digital citizenship
