speech is, how and why it is

Hate speech is speech which
attacks a person or group on the
basis of their race, religion, sexual
orientation or their physical or
mental disability.
Free speech is the right to voice
and share your opinions and ideas
freely and without fear of retaliation.

Complete the following tasks
by answering in full sentences.
1. What makes a comment
hate speech?
2. Is a negative opinion or
nasty statement the same
thing as hate speech?
3. If a nasty comment is
directed at someone, rather
than a general statement,
does that make it different?
4. Why do we have hate
speech laws? And free
speech?
1. Read through the nine statements on the slide.
2. Rank them in order of how much you agree with
them. 1 = agree the most / 9 = agree the least
Consider your ideas in detail and answer the following
questions.
1. What drives someone to post hate speech online?
2. How might they be feeling?
3. Why may they be feeling this way?
4. Does the fact they are posting it online change the
way they might express their views?
5. Does online hate speech always reflect how the
person posting it truly feels?
6. What are the different ways in which hate speech
could impact on an individual?
7. How does it affect society as a whole?
Look at each case study on
the right.
• Label each case study with
whether you think it is Hate
Speech or free speech.
• Explain your choice using
the word ‘because’ in your
answer.

that racially abuse
someone, making
comments about their skin
colour.
