We started off the session with an exercise - imagine a police officer, a doctor, a nurse, a criminal, a fire fighter, a family, a teacher, a basketball player, a boy, a girl, and more. When we compared similarities and differences, to our surprise, almost all of us had drawn the same family: a mother, father, and children who look like them. Almost all of us had imagined male police officers, fire fighters, and criminals. Almost all of us had imagined female teachers, nurses, and nannies. Several of us imagined only able-bodied people (no wheelchairs, glasses, etc.). And we did it all without having been told to imagine this way. After comparing, we pondered what would an alien species, whose only exposure to humans was in the form of these imaginings, assume about the human race. We then extended the metaphor into the fact that we were, at one point, naive to all these messages in our very beginnings - we WERE aliens to this way of thinking at one point. We then analyzed where we got these messages. Clearly, everyone knew that men can be nurses, children do not always look like their parents, crimes can be committed by people in business clothes, etc. And yet, here we were, so clear on what society has taught us who these people are. We learned about the cycle of oppression, where stereotypes can become prejudice, then discrimination, then oppression, then internalized oppression/dominance. Finally, we discussed ways we can interrupt the cycle of oppression so that we, the people around us, and future generations can get beyond societal messages of what we should believe about one another.

Moses Brown Trouble with Sameness
We started off the session with an exercise - imagine a police officer, a doctor, a nurse, a criminal, a fire fighter, a family, a teacher, a basketball player, a boy, a girl, and more. When we compared similarities and differences, to our surprise, almost all of us had drawn the same family: a mother, father, and children who look like them. Almost all of us had imagined male police officers, fire fighters, and criminals. Almost all of us had imagined female teachers, nurses, and nannies. Several of us imagined only able-bodied people (no wheelchairs, glasses, etc.). And we did it all without having been told to imagine this way. After comparing, we pondered what would an alien species, whose only exposure to humans was in the form of these imaginings, assume about the human race. We then extended the metaphor into the fact that we were, at one point, naive to all these messages in our very beginnings - we WERE aliens to this way of thinking at one point. We then analyzed where we got these messages. Clearly, everyone knew that men can be nurses, children do not always look like their parents, crimes can be committed by people in business clothes, etc. And yet, here we were, so clear on what society has taught us who these people are. We learned about the cycle of oppression, where stereotypes can become prejudice, then discrimination, then oppression, then internalized oppression/dominance. Finally, we discussed ways we can interrupt the cycle of oppression so that we, the people around us, and future generations can get beyond societal messages of what we should believe about one another.

Pluralism, Majoritarian and Elite Theories
The question whether Madison's brilliant solution to bringing competing groups into relative harmony succeeded also brings us to our third concept: the plualist, majoritarian and elite models political scientists use to explain the American political system and how it works.
Spoiler alert: Only around half of the US population's eligible voters actually vote. And if voters aren't voting who runs the show? (The 2020 presidential election was an exception with 66 percent of eligible voters voting.)
Pluralists realize most people don't vote, but, in our high school example, they would argue that as long as each group from popular kids to nerds is represented before student government and school administration, good and fair decisions can result. This approach updates Madison's original solution for the modern era.
Followers of
Elite theory argue that since many don't vote, those with power (i.e. money) rule. In our high school example popularity rules, so more cheerleaders and jocks get into power and call the shots.
There is also a second version of elite theory that says education and wisdom rather than money should equal power. This view, which was also held by some of our founders, says people often don't vote because they are ignorant so decisions should be made by those better able to deal with differing ideas and points of view. In our example, teachers and principals are wiser and should rule because they know what's best for the students.
Those subscribing to majoritarianism argue that those left out in society would have more power if barriers to voting (time, money, feeling empowered) were lifted so more voices could be heard than just elites. In our example, nerds would be better off if everyone voted and had a say because the popular kids are outnumbered by other groups if they joined together rather than being divided.

- 1. Film Evaluation Sheet 1. Can you give two examples from the film as to why people stereotype? One of the reasons given as to why people stereotype other people was the negative perception of youths, especially black youths, in London; police, residents, government, media, parents and maybe teachers. In the debate we talked about the London riots. In actually fact only 25% of under 18s were prosecuted for committing an offense. In the debate we also talked about how the police might stop and search young black males more than any other race. On the other hand, stereotypes can be justified. Stereotypes exist because of actions of the people that have happened in the past. For example, being at a bus stop and fearing a group of boys approaching you. 2. How does stereotyping damage people? Give one example from the debate that we had. Sometimes it might make people feel less secure because they have been judged by society. It makes people feel like they have to fit into a certain group. 3. What ways did you pick out as to how people stereotype one another? Women are not physically and mentally as strong as men. People stereotype others on the way they act, the clothes that they wear, the slang might use etc. 4. How does society encourage stereotyping? The media encourages stereotyping by making up stories that only focus on the kind of group. For some more recent events then paper will put a spin on the story o make it sound more negative than it actually is. 5. Can we ever stop stereotyping?
- 2. No, because people are always going to be in conflict with one another. It is part of how society functions. People will always notice the differences rather than the things we share. 6. How can we improve people’s attitudes towards one another? We can remember that we are all human and that we are all equal. We should also treat each other with respect. We are all the same.
