Zeyd Boukhers from Fraunhofer Institute presented on FAIR Data Spaces, a project aiming to create a common data space for industry, science, and society. The project is working to overcome challenges with current data exchange practices by establishing rules and standards. It is developing demonstrators to showcase data exchange between Gaia-X and various research infrastructure initiatives. Upcoming demonstrators will focus on biodiversity data, research data quality assurance, and cross-platform healthcare data analytics. FAIR Data Spaces also announced an open call for additional demonstrators from other domains.

The global need to securely derive (instant) insights, have motivated data architectures from distributed storage, to data lakes, data warehouses and lake-houses. In this talk we describe Tag.bio, a next generation data mesh platform that embeds vital elements such as domain centricity/ownership, Data as Products, Self-serve architecture, with a federated computational layer. We live in an era of cloud computing. Many of the services in the life sciences are keenly planning cloud transformations, seeking to create globally distributed ecosystems of harmonised data based on standards from organisations like GA4GH. CINECA faces similar challenges, gathering cohort datasets from all over the globe, many of which are pinned in place, due to their size, legal restrictions, or other considerations. But is “bringing compute to the data” always the right choice? In this webinar, based on experiences from the Human Cell Atlas Data Coordination Platform and other projects from EMBL-EBI, we will explore the concept of “data gravity”: The idea that whilst there are forces that may hold data in one place, there are others that require it to be mobile. We’ll consider how effectively planning a cloud strategy requires consideration of the gravity of datasets, and the impact it may have on team skills required, incentives for good practice, and storage and compute costs.

Big Data, Beyond the Data Center
Increasingly the next scientific discoveries and the next industrial innovative breakthroughs will depend on the capacity to extract knowledge and sense from gigantic amount of information. Examples vary from processing data provided by scientific instruments such as the CERN’s LHC; collecting data from large-scale sensor networks; grabbing, indexing and nearly instantaneously mining and searching the Web; building and traversing the billion-edges social network graphs; anticipating market and customer trends through multiple channels of information. Collecting information from various sources, recognizing patterns and distilling insights constitutes what is called the Big Data challenge. However, As the volume of data grows exponentially, the management of these data becomes more complex in proportion. A key challenge is to handle the complexity of data management on Hybrid distributed infrastructures, i.e assemblage of Cloud, Grid or Desktop Grids. In this talk, I will overview our works in this research area; starting with BitDew, a middleware for large scale data management on Clouds and Desktop Grids. Then I will present our approach to enable MapReduce on Desktop Grids. Finally, I will present our latest results around Active Data, a programming model for managing data life cycle on heterogeneous systems and infrastructures.

A Taxonomy of the Data Resource in the Networked Industry
This presentation reports on the design of a taxonomy of the data resource in the networked industry. It was held on the 7th International Scientific Symposium on Logistics on June 6, 2014, in Cologne, Germany. The presentation motivates the topic, analyzes four networking industry cases and discusses a first version of the taxonomy. The presentation argues that for companies aiming at designing a future-proof data architecture leveraging the potentials of the industrial internet, collaborative forms of organizations etc. transparency about data sources, data ownership, criticality, compliance of standards of data, data quality are key for success. In addition, the presentation introduces a first sketch of a method supporting businesses in applying the taxonomy.

To realize the promise of FAIR data, companies must be data mature. They must adopt data-centric architecture and the #FAIR (findable, accessible, interoperable and reusable) principles. When they do, the data they need will be linked and self-describing. The data when queried will tell you where it is.
A desiloed, #semantic graph data abstraction--the only feasible means behind creating FAIR data at this point--is not only the means to data discovery, but also a path to model-driven development and data sharing at scale, both of which will break an organization's habit of duplicating data and logic.

Scientific Computing and Visualization using HDF
Aashish Chaudhary gave a presentation on Kitware's work with scientific computing and visualization using HDF. HDF is a widely used data format at Kitware for domains like climate modeling, geospatial visualization, and information visualization. Kitware is looking to improve HDF support for cloud and web environments to enable streaming analytics and web-based data analysis. Semantic Data Enrichment: a Human-in-the-Loop Perspective
Data enrichment is vital for leveraging heterogeneous data sources in various business analyses, AI applications, and data-driven services. Knowledge Graphs (KGs) support the enrichment of heterogeneous data sources by making entities first-class citizens: links to entities help interconnect heterogeneous data pieces or even ease access to external data sources to eventually augment the original data. Data annotation algorithms to find and link entities in reference KGs, as well as to identify out-of-KG entities have been proposed and applied to different types of data, such as tables, and texts. However, despite recent progress in annotation algorithms, the output of these algorithms does not always meet the quality requirements that make the enriched data valuable in downstream applications. As a result, semantic data enrichment remains an effort-consuming and error-prone task. In this seminar, we discuss the relationships between annotation algorithms, data enrichment, and KG construction, highlighting challenges and open problems. In addition, we advocate for a native human-in-the-loop perspective that enables users to control the outcome of the enrichment and, eventually, improve the quality of the enriched data. We focus in particular on the annotation and enrichment of tabular data and briefly discuss the application of a similar paradigm to the enrichment of textual data in the legal domain, e.g., on court decisions and criminal investigation documents.

Semantic Data Enrichment: a Human-in-the-Loop Perspective
Data enrichment is vital for leveraging heterogeneous data sources in various business analyses, AI applications, and data-driven services. Knowledge Graphs (KGs) support the enrichment of heterogeneous data sources by making entities first-class citizens: links to entities help interconnect heterogeneous data pieces or even ease access to external data sources to eventually augment the original data. Data annotation algorithms to find and link entities in reference KGs, as well as to identify out-of-KG entities have been proposed and applied to different types of data, such as tables, and texts. However, despite recent progress in annotation algorithms, the output of these algorithms does not always meet the quality requirements that make the enriched data valuable in downstream applications. As a result, semantic data enrichment remains an effort-consuming and error-prone task. In this seminar, we discuss the relationships between annotation algorithms, data enrichment, and KG construction, highlighting challenges and open problems. In addition, we advocate for a native human-in-the-loop perspective that enables users to control the outcome of the enrichment and, eventually, improve the quality of the enriched data. We focus in particular on the annotation and enrichment of tabular data and briefly discuss the application of a similar paradigm to the enrichment of textual data in the legal domain, e.g., on court decisions and criminal investigation documents.
