be on as a faceless brand so people can choose
which side of you they want to see & follow that
profile.

  1. By a show of hands, how many of you work for, own or are starting a new company? How many of you have ever attended a networking event?
  2. how many of you have ever followed up with someone you met at one of these events?
  3. I have a little habit some of you entrepreneurs may want to copy. Every few months, I’ll invite the most interesting people I’ve met at the last few networking events, to a small gathering at my house, the people on this short list always either work in or with startups. This past Thursday I had one such event where a gentleman pitched his app company and asked if I would take him on as a client.
  4. Tonight I’m going to walk you through how I decide if I want to work with a new startup and the plan I will implement if I work with this one.
  5. First, let’s go over a few things: 1. If at any point I begin to speak too quickly wave your hand as if you are the queen of England
  6. 2. If I use a term that you do not understand stick two arms straight up like this and I will pause to explain.
  7. 3. This is an “audience participation required”, type of event - the two people who offer the most high quality contributions tonight, will get a company t-shirt. The rest of you will have to purchase one from my website
  8. 4. Because I’m only with you for one night, I want you to take this opportunity to get to know your local peers. Break into groups with a few people you do not know – we’re going to have a little friendly competition. The group that offers the most high quality answers will

  10. Now. Break into groups, have one person from each group come up here to get an envelope for your group. Place your business card / email on a torn piece of paper into the envelope. If your group wins you’ll be emailed the book, if you loose you will only get emailed a digital copy of this presentation.
  11. So back to the story, the guy gives me the pitch for his startup and asks if I will work with him.
  12. Pause & back up. Why would this guy want a growth hacker in the first place? Who knows what a growth hacker is?
  13. Someone who has worked with MANY startups. is naturally intellectually curious, gets bored easily, likes to learn new things, and really likes to conduct experiments and test hypotheses. She thinks outside the box, is willing to take risks that fail and try non-traditional approaches to achieve goals faster. She knows which loopholes to look for when acquiring users through digital & guerrilla marketing channels And knows enough programming languages to be able to utilize bots.

  15. So back to the startup. What do you think the first step would be in growing an app based company? 4 minutes, jump up when you have an answer, once someone gives an answer you cannot give the same one.
  16. The first thing I do, is think of which of my friends would use the app AND promote it amongst their friends. If I can name 10 friends in totally different locations, I move on to step 2.
  17. Step 2 is fairly simple, think of why they would want to promote it to their friends (money is rarely the reason) – in this case, each friend would want the publicity tied to the company running UGC campaigns. As there’d be 9 people, there would only be 11 video ads broadcasting across social media platforms, databases and websites.
  18. How would we get from these 10 to our first 1,000 downloads? Groups 4 minutes, jump up when you have an answer, once someone gives an answer you cannot give the same one.
  19. For this particular app, each of the friends would need at least 15 friends in their UGC with them. I know two of them would pull in 25. Shooting the professional commercial, I’d need 50 people. So this gets us to 230. Let’s say ½ of the people in the commercial tell 10 friends or family members about and they all download the app, this gives us roughly 1,400 downloads
  20. We record everything to Facebook live & Twitter live on my company profiles, where there’s an audience a bit over 12,000 lets say ¼ see it. This would bring us another 4,000 customers. Total 5,400
  21. How do we break 10,000? Groups 4 minutes, jump up when you have an answer, once someone gives an answer you cannot give the same one.
  22. BetaList. Here we gather 10,000 e-mails and 70% download the app Total 12,400

  24. 230 * 20 = 4600 Total 17,000
  25. I go back to the 30% that did not download the app and tell them that the first 20,000 people to download the app get it free, not mentioning how much it will cost later. This gets us another 1,000 downloads. Gives us 22,000 downloads
  26. What’s next? Groups 4 minutes, jump up when you have an answer, once someone gives an answer you cannot give the same one.
  27. Once we hit 20,000 the founders change the app from free, to $1 in the app store and message all the people who downloaded the app: submit a review to the app store to keep it free forever or pay $1. This then makes us a credible app in the app store as it garners at least a few thousand reviews.
  28. I track where the majority of downloads are coming from and which age group. I then purchase ad space when people in that age group are on that respective social media site
  29. What’s next? Groups 4 minutes, jump up when you have an answer, once someone gives an answer you cannot give the same one.
  30. It is time to move up the food chain. I edit the commercial to have all of the phones show another company’s logo, changing this product from B2C to B2B. I then post the videos to each company’s social media pages & tag the people in the ad so they once again share it, garnering attention from the target companies and from here I let the data determine my next step. … it will most likely be press coverage.
