100 Minute Lessons
Health and Social Care
100 min - 3 part lesson or
3 x 60 min lessons?
1. Tuition and Preparation
2. Guest Speaker
/Interview
3. Evaluation and
Reflection
WWW: opportunity to invite
guest speakers into
school, allowing students to
talk first hand to real HSC
sector workers.
A valuable experience within
any vocational subject
The aim over the 2 year course is to
invite guest speakers from as many
sector areas as possible, as well as go
out of school and visit local work
places.
100 minute
lessons provide
scope to link
topics that use
the same skills
and techniques
Linking of topics using same
skills
For example a lesson finding a
sequence from the nth term links
to finding the coordinates of a
linear graph with standard
equation y = mx + c
Nth term = 3n + 2
This generates the sequence
5, 8, 11, 14, 17
y = 3x + 2 generates the coordinates (1, 5)
(2, 8) (3, 11) (4, 14) (5, 17)
Using the Nth term to
work out the formula of
hydrocarbons from
distillation of crude oil
Including cross curricular links
- Animal Rights in RE with Animal Testing in Science.
- Structure of the Earth in Science with Plate Tectonics in
Geography
Having time for evaluation and
peer assessment
Students can sit down and
assess each other’s
practical work at the end
of the lesson and still have
time to clear up!
We can concentrate on the
criteria being assessed and
make judgements without
rushing.
This then feeds into
improvements required to
progress in future lessons.
Take Up Time
The ‘Green
Pen Event!’
Students write
their own ‘www
and ebi’
OR
They mark each
others work with
‘www and ebi’
and discuss in
small groups
Peer literacy marking –
both English and subject
specific
Having a glossary of words
for future reference
One lot of boxes the
teacher ticks, if they
have met the
requirement. Also
write below the label
EBI / next step
comments.
The second set of boxes are for
students to tick during take up time, if
they are confident that they can meet
the requirement.

Editor's Notes

  • #2 I believe that with 60 minute lessons, guest speakers and visits would of used 3 separate lessons, a total of 180 minutes. With 100 minutes opportunities have opened up and time has become more directed and with greater impact. I believe more was gained by the students being able to prepare for a guest speaker, meet with the guest speaker and evaluate and reflect on the visit all on the same day. New information fresh in their minds, previous learning revisited and pieced together with a specific sector worker in front of them giving examples and sharing real life experiences in response to their questions . Students were respectful and more focused, the evaluation more valuable, making some of the more ‘not so interesting’ legislation of the Health and Social care sector real and intriguing, worthwhile. A great deal of learning shown with input and involvement from the whole class.Tuition/Preparation (approx 20 minutes)– Directed and focused, there is ‘someone’ coming in ‘someone real’, they want to ask thois they want to ask that, there is no dawdling all students on task. They can revisit their notes, look at specific information relating to the Health Care Sector visitor and devise some questions. The teacher can share background information too about the specific organisation or establishment.Guest Speaker /Interview – Invited in, a full objective given to the speaker, they were welcomed to speak for up to 60 minutes and share as much information as they are willing to of. Coming form an ‘actual person’, as one student put it, grabbed the students attention and even the quietest of students were asking questions and intrigued by the visitors role and all aspects of their job. Evaluation – (at least 20 minutes) – Time at the end was given for evaluation. A reflection for most as to whether this area was where they wanted towork in the future. Additional information could be made to their notes and all the information could be related directly to a vocation and place of work.
  • #4 This has led to improvements in finish to products and helped pupils see where these improvements fit on learning ladder
