Some thoughts on Change…or… Why I believe you should really, really, really read the book ‘Who Moved My Cheese’ by Spencer Johnson. I did this presentation on a Friday-afternoon session of an IT department that is about to radically change their skill-sets from AS-400 towards SAP over the years to come.
So the way I delivered this presentation was rather ‘light’ but the message in there hit its target nevertheless!

The law of the nature says Change! and the first human instinct says What Change? I am fine.
The human philosophy towards work:
Theories suggest that as individuals we love to follow routines as it does not require much of hard work.At any point in time, if we are asked to leave our comfort zones, because things are changing, it is natural for us to dislike change & feel how unfair the whole situation is.
Change is perceived as an Evil:
Change is always seen as disorientation and increases anxiety levels in individuals. At times it is also perceived as a threat because we see our "perfectly created life" slipping out of our hands.
Reasons when we welcome Change:
- Either we are too much in PAIN & want to get rid of it.
- Or we are in too much in PLEASURE that we won’t mind it.
Coping with The Change Cycle:
- Anticipate Change, as it will happen. If not today then tomorrow.
- Detach yourself from the situation & determine what impact (good/bad) it can have on your life.
- Don't Flight or Fight, Look at Change positively as it can be a means to achieve your goals.
- Start working hard towards a new journey.
- Keep the ‘End’ in mind & then work towards it; this will motivate you to come closer to your dreams.
- Enjoy the Changed situations.
- But be better prepared for the upcoming ‘Unanticipated Change’.

Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.
2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
The Roman Empire A Historical Colossus.pdfkaushalkr1407
The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.
The French Revolution, which began in 1789, was a period of radical social and political upheaval in France. It marked the decline of absolute monarchies, the rise of secular and democratic republics, and the eventual rise of Napoleon Bonaparte. This revolutionary period is crucial in understanding the transition from feudalism to modernity in Europe.

Book: Who Moved My Cheese?
Author: Dr Spencer Johnson
Category: Self-help and Change
Management
Summary: Accept change and move with it.
Anticipate it and enjoy it.
Rating:
2. There are four
characters in a maze.
The four characters are:
Sniff and Scurry, two
mice that represent the
simple parts of our
personality.
Hem and Haw, two little
people that represent
the complex and
“human” parts of our
personality.
Sniff smells change early. Scurry is quick to act.
Hem resist change
as he feels it will
bring something
worse.
Haw resists at first
but then learns to
adapt as he
discovers that
change can lead to
something better.

3. The Maze represents your
community, your organisation, the
relationship you are in.
At the beginning of the story
there is a piece of cheese that the
four characters eat.
The cheese in the Maze
represents what makes us happy –
money, stability, good job etc.

4. The mice check the cheese every
day to see if there have been any
changes and keep their running
shoes around their neck in case
they have to move again.
The little people settle down
around the cheese and become
complacent and self satisfied with
their cheese.

5. One day they wake up to find that
the cheese is gone.
The mice immediately put on their
running shoes and go off in search
of new cheese.
The Little People stay there in
shock, not believing this terrible
turn of events.

6. Hem insists on staying where they
are, saying that ‘life is unfair’ and
they should be compensated for
this loss of cheese. He is never
able to abandon the place where
his favourite cheese was and stays
where he is, even if it means
becoming extinct.
Haw at first shuts the change out,
not wanting to accept that things
have changed.
6
www.freshideas.es
7. At first Haw is frightened of going
back into the maze again, looking
for new cheese.
After a while, however, he realises
that looking for new cheese is
better than staying in an old place
that has no cheese.
He imagines himself finding and
enjoying new cheese and that
pushes him on.
7
www.freshideas.es
8. Eventually, and after almost giving
up, he finds new cheese in a part
of the maze where he had never
been before.
Sniff and Scurry are already there,
enjoying the cheese.
This time he enjoys the cheese
but continues to go out every day
to discover new parts of the maze
and he checks the cheese every
day for signs of change.

9. The lessons that Haw takes away
from the loss of the cheese are:
Change happens and we must
move with it.
We should anticipate change and
be ready for things to change.
We should monitor our current
situation so we know when things
are starting not to work.
9
www.freshideas.es
10. We should adapt to change
quickly and let go of the old ways
of doing things, or the things
themselves.
We must change!
We should enjoy the change and
treat it as an adventure!
