(beginning, middle, and ending). During this step, you
work steadily to connect your ideas to form a first version
of your writing.

Beginning- The beginning does a number of important jobs.
1. Grabs the reader's attention with an interesting fact,
question, or anecdote
2. Provides necessary background
3. Enables a voice appropriate for the purpose of the writing
4. States the thesis of the piece

Middle- The middle supports and develops the thesis, providing a variety
of details and information:

4. Quotations and citations offer expert information.
5. Experiments supply scientific evidence.
6. Logic and argumentation persuade the reader

basic patterns of organization:
1. Time: Organizing details chronologically
2. Location: Organizing details spatially
3. Logic: Presenting statements according to correct reasoning.
4. Conversion: Taking a position, then arguing toward an opposite opinion
5. Least to most: Presenting details from least to most important
6. Most to least: Presenting details from most to least
7. Subject by subject: Describing one subject completely; then the other
8. Point by point: treating one point at a time
9. Causes and effects: Covering causes and then effects
10. Similarities and differences: covering comparisons and then contrasts
11. Pros and cons: covering benefits and then drawbacks

• After completing a solid first draft, take a break. The length of
the break can vary depending upon the complexity of the
writing, but it should be long enough for you to return to your
work refreshed and ready to revise your draft.
• When you revise, you change what you need to better satisfy
your purpose and audience. Revising is the essence of writing.
Most professional writers rewrite their sentences, rewrite their
sentences, and then rewrite them again. Even great writers revise
their own work.

Revising Checklist

When you revise, you make four basic improvements:
(1) add necessary information, (2) remove unnecessary
details, (3) reorder disorganized material, and(4) rework
unclear ideas.

Follow these five steps when you revise:
1. Let your writing "cool off" for at least a day before you touch it.
2. Look at your writing from a critical standpoint.
3. Read your first draft once all the way through.
4. Decide whether you want to revise this draft or start again.
5. If you revise, go step by step. Concentrate on one issue at a time. For
example, first read for organization, then for tone or voice, and finally for
mechanics like spelling, etc.

Editing Checklist
Words
1. Nouns are specific and verbs are active.
2. Modifiers are used sparingly and only to improve clarity.
3. Words show respect for gender, ethnicity. Age, and ability.
Sentences
4. Sentences vary in length and begin in different ways.
5. Sentences flow smoothly.
6. Most sentences use active voice.
7. All sentences include a subject and a predicate and express a complete thought.

8. All sentences end with correct punctuation.
9. Commas are used correctly.

15. White space (margins, blank lines) creates accessible blocks of text.
16. The overall design enhances the clarity of the piece.
