All prewriting or planning begins with thinking about
four key elements:
1. Topic
2. Author's Purpose
3. Audience
4. Special Considerations
DRAFTING

Drafting is creating a first written version or draft
(beginning, middle, and ending). During this step, you
work steadily to connect your ideas to form a first version
of your writing.
DRAFTING

Beginning- The beginning does a number of important jobs.
1. Grabs the reader's attention with an interesting fact,
question, or anecdote
2. Provides necessary background
3. Enables a voice appropriate for the purpose of the writing
4. States the thesis of the piece
DRAFTING

Middle- The middle supports and develops the thesis, providing a variety
of details and information:
1. Facts and statistics explain ideas.
2. Definitions and examples clarify ideas.
3. Anecdotes and observations connect the topic to real life..
4. Quotations and citations offer expert information.
5. Experiments supply scientific evidence.
6. Logic and argumentation persuade the reader

basic patterns of organization:

1. Sumps up the thesis
2. Emphasizes a key point
3. Connects with the reader's life
4. Calls the reader to act

REVISING

• After completing a solid first draft, take a break. The length of
the break can vary depending upon the complexity of the
writing, but it should be long enough for you to return to your
work refreshed and ready to revise your draft.
• When you revise, you change what you need to better satisfy
your purpose and audience. Revising is the essence of writing.
Most professional writers rewrite their sentences, rewrite their
sentences, and then rewrite them again. Even great writers revise
their own work.

When you revise, you make four basic improvements:
(1) add necessary information, (2) remove unnecessary
details, (3) reorder disorganized material, and(4) rework
unclear ideas.
REVISING
Creative Nonfiction | 16
Strategies of Creative Nonfiction

Follow these five steps when you revise:
1. Let your writing "cool off" for at least a day before you touch it.
2. Look at your writing from a critical standpoint.
3. Read your first draft once all the way through.
4. Decide whether you want to revise this draft or start again.
5. If you revise, go step by step. Concentrate on one issue at a time. For
example, first read for organization, then for tone or voice, and finally for
mechanics like spelling, etc.
