Fiction Analysis
Chinua Achebe excels in the application of his characters because he exploits characterization flawlessly and ingeniously in various instances in his works. In the short story “Dead Men’s Path,” Achebe employs the character of Michael Obi to explore every single aspect of the text. Obi is a visionary, enlightened, enthusiastic, and progressive individual who aims to revitalize the fortunes of his society through education. Amidst his attempts to change the society, Obi is indulged in conflicts, some interpersonal and others with the prevailing culture. The mission is for the community to accept the modern culture at the expense of the deteriorating traditional Igbo cultures. Throughout the plot, Achebe employs Obi to exploit each intent of the text. Michael Obi is a critical character to Achebe’s “Dead Men’s Path” because his actions exploit important aspects of thematic expressions, setting exploitation, and ideological conflicts among others.
The first aspect of the text that is illuminated by the character of Obi I the setting. “Dead Men’s Path” is set in Nigeria in 1949. The plot takes place within an Igbo culture that is rich and whose members are motivated to maintain the culture. In 1949, most Nigerians still lived within the realm of their cultures. The persistence on the traditionalism was anchored on the oppressive activities of the colonizing Europeans. Most Nigerians did not like the Europeans who forced them into hard labor, soiled their culture, and discriminated against their skin color. In retaliation, the Nigerians saw anybody who supported the European as a traitor. People did not care much about the future as the present anguish clouded their judgments. In simple terms, the Igbo community, and Nigeria by extension, in 1949, was a hostile context for any foreign ideas.
There are various aspects that Achebe uses to create an even better understanding of the context using the character of Obi. The position of Obi in the context is emphasized by just how much the Igbo community was missing by insisting on the traditional culture. In different areas, Obi describes the context as one that lacks “beautiful flowers,” which is an outgrowth of civilization. Other portrayals of face value issues that describe the context include the “admired wife” (147), “beautiful wife” (149), and the description of “not handsome” qualities that emanate from a culture that is stuck in the past. Evidently, the context is stuck in a conflict between the present and the future, something that Obi explains with his visual representations. Additionally, the extent of the conflict between the community and the school is highlighted in a number of ways. Significant of the explorations is the path that cuts through the school compound. Single Character Analysis
The book “Things Fall Apart” by Chinua Achebe published in 1958 simulates a story
about the pre-colonial life in Nigeria. The story revolves around a strong cultural community
with an individual with bad karma following his way leading to his demise and the penetration
by the White colonists that started eroding the rich culture of the community. The paper will
revolve around Okonkwo who is the main protagonist in the story. The character has the best
interests of the community because he was seeking to become one of the lords of the community
someday … “to become one of the lords of the clan” but his actions did not allow him. The
character is full of pride, hard work, violence and anger (Achebe, 2017). It is evident that in
chapters 14 and 17 Okonkwo is not at peace with his outcomes after having to leave his
community after killing his adopted son. In addition, his other son Nwoye was proving a burden
and failure because he was not following his father’s ways and interests.
The character is one of the most complicated and sophisticated characters with the best
track record. The book portrays Okonkwo as someone who will not back away from a fight as
long as it does not reflect poorly on his character. The individual hated his father and son
because of being poor, lazy and more into the music stuff that were not good for a man of the
society. The activities made it a challenge for the character to have any association to such traits
and instead worked hard and violent believing that it was the way a man should act. The
character comes off as a know it all person that would like to stand tall in all meeting
congregations and be heard just because it would fulfil his ego and those watching.

The story is reflective to the main character because his actions tend to dictate the
outcome of the book and the whole community. The author lets the story of the main character
and that of the deeper meaning also simulate with the traits of the main character. It is evident in
the chapters; Okonkwo is not satisfactory with the farming and was almost giving up on the
practice because he is used to have his way and almost immediate outcomes …“Okonkwo works
hard on his new farm but with less enthusiasm than he had the first time around (Achebe,
2017)”. On the other hand, he believes he is a failure and it eats him away because his son is not
anything reflective to his character and thus despises him. The book itself focuses on a
community that is losing its culture to the White colonialists despite standing tall and trying to
salvage it and still ended up collaborating.

There are so many considerations in making ethical decisions, but what consideration is most important? Different cultures and ethical systems have produced theories that favor one consideration over others. The consideration that a theory favors is called a Fundamental Moral Unit, or FMU.
Many of the classical Western philosophers from the Greek and roman traditions favor the individual as the Fundamental Moral Unit. In these theories, the primary dictate is a negative statement: Don’t get in an individual’s way in his or her pursuit of the good life.
Feminist theories tend to determine the best choice based on how well those choices strengthen the connections among people and how well the needs of the most vulnerable are addressed. The fundamental moral unit here is relationship between people and is based on the belief that care should be given to those who can’t take care of themselves.
Some Eastern theories promote the overall good of the community first and foremost. And some indigenous theories stress human’s connection with the world as a whole, with all natural systems and species having an equal right to co-exist. People who grow up in these traditions expect that they and others will sacrifice individual self-interest for the good of the group and the environment. The Fundamental Moral Unit here is called "aggregate good."
Let’s consider a decision you might encounter if you were a member of your local city council. There is a 50 acre parcel of land in your city’s jurisdiction that was designated a hundred years ago to remain open space. Now the area contains some ancient Native burial grounds, but the tribe members a hundred years and tribe members today are happy with the designated use as long as the woodlands around the burial mounds stay intact. A developer would like to build a shopping mall there. As a city council member, you get to decide how that land will be used today: should it remain a park or become a shopping mall?
If you make your choice based only on the good that comes to individuals, you might be tempted to go with the shopping mall. One implication is that we often have a tendency to judge others unfairly because we do not take into account the situational factors that may have caused them to make unethical decisions. We jump to the conclusion that they are bad people because they did a bad thing. That said, it is important to remember that situational factors are usually explanations for while people err, they are not excuses. The best way to avoid this error, experts say, it to put ourselves in the shoes of others and try to envision the pressures they might have faced.
The other implication of the fundamental attribution error is that we may be too easy on ourselves, if we are not careful. We may too readily find situational factors, organizational pressures and the like and then simply excuse our own conduct.
The fundamental attribution error is the tendency to attribute "causes of behavior to actors (i.e., internal, dispositional factors) rather than the situation (i.e., external, environmental factors." We see that other people have done bad things, and we assume that it is because of their character rather than the fact that they were, perhaps, striving so hard to please their superiors that they did not even notice the ethical issue that they flubbed.
According to some psychologists, the other side of the coin from the fundamental attribution error is the actor-observer bias which is people’s tendency to over-emphasize the role of the situation in their own behaviors. They insist there’s nothing wrong with their character, because their errors are accounted for by some situational factor—the boss’s pressure, the need to feed their families, etc.
Francesca Gino writes: "In particular, one mistake we systematically make is known as the correspondence bias. When making attributions as we evaluate others, we tend to ascribe too little influence to the situation and too much to their dispositions. In simpler terms, we tend to believe that people’s behavior reflects their unique dispositions and skills, when many times it actually reflects aspects of the situation in which they find themselves." This sounds a lot like a different name for the fundamental attribution error.

Fiction Analysis
Chinua Achebe excels in the application of his characters because he exploits characterization flawlessly and ingeniously in various instances in his works. In the short story “Dead Men’s Path,” Achebe employs the character of Michael Obi to explore every single aspect of the text. Obi is a visionary, enlightened, enthusiastic, and progressive individual who aims to revitalize the fortunes of his society through education. Amidst his attempts to change the society, Obi is indulged in conflicts, some interpersonal and others with the prevailing culture. The mission is for the community to accept the modern culture at the expense of the deteriorating traditional Igbo cultures. Throughout the plot, Achebe employs Obi to exploit each intent of the text. Michael Obi is a critical character to Achebe’s “Dead Men’s Path” because his actions exploit important aspects of thematic expressions, setting exploitation, and ideological conflicts among others.
The first aspect of the text that is illuminated by the character of Obi I the setting. “Dead Men’s Path” is set in Nigeria in 1949. The plot takes place within an Igbo culture that is rich and whose members are motivated to maintain the culture. In 1949, most Nigerians still lived within the realm of their cultures. The persistence on the traditionalism was anchored on the oppressive activities of the colonizing Europeans. Most Nigerians did not like the Europeans who forced them into hard labor, soiled their culture, and discriminated against their skin color. In retaliation, the Nigerians saw anybody who supported the European as a traitor. People did not care much about the future as the present anguish clouded their judgments. In simple terms, the Igbo community, and Nigeria by extension, in 1949, was a hostile context for any foreign ideas.
There are various aspects that Achebe uses to create an even better understanding of the context using the character of Obi. The position of Obi in the context is emphasized by just how much the Igbo community was missing by insisting on the traditional culture. In different areas, Obi describes the context as one that lacks “beautiful flowers,” which is an outgrowth of civilization. Other portrayals of face value issues that describe the context include the “admired wife” (147), “beautiful wife” (149), and the description of “not handsome” qualities that emanate from a culture that is stuck in the past. Evidently, the context is stuck in a conflict between the present and the future, something that Obi explains with his visual representations. Additionally, the extent of the conflict between the community and the school is highlighted in a number of ways. Significant of the explorations is the path that cuts through the school compound. Evidently, members of the society do not see any benefits of the school. They would confirm their displeasure with the change by creati.

Single Character Analysis
The book “Things Fall Apart” by Chinua Achebe published in 1958 simulates a story
about the pre-colonial life in Nigeria. The story revolves around a strong cultural community
with an individual with bad karma following his way leading to his demise and the penetration
by the White colonists that started eroding the rich culture of the community. The paper will
revolve around Okonkwo who is the main protagonist in the story. The character has the best
interests of the community because he was seeking to become one of the lords of the community
someday … “to become one of the lords of the clan” but his actions did not allow him. The
character is full of pride, hard work, violence and anger (Achebe, 2017). It is evident that in
chapters 14 and 17 Okonkwo is not at peace with his outcomes after having to leave his
community after killing his adopted son. In addition, his other son Nwoye was proving a burden
and failure because he was not following his father’s ways and interests.
The character is one of the most complicated and sophisticated characters with the best
track record. The book portrays Okonkwo as someone who will not back away from a fight as
long as it does not reflect poorly on his character. The individual hated his father and son
because of being poor, lazy and more into the music stuff that were not good for a man of the
society. The activities made it a challenge for the character to have any association to such traits
and instead worked hard and violent believing that it was the way a man should act. The
character comes off as a know it all person that would like to stand tall in all meeting
congregations and be heard just because it would fulfil his ego and those watching.

The story is reflective to the main character because his actions tend to dictate the
outcome of the book and the whole community. The author lets the story of the main character
and that of the deeper meaning also simulate with the traits of the main character. It is evident in
the chapters; Okonkwo is not satisfactory with the farming and was almost giving up on the
practice because he is used to have his way and almost immediate outcomes …“Okonkwo works
hard on his new farm but with less enthusiasm than he had the first time around (Achebe,
2017)”. On the other hand, he believes he is a failure and it eats him away because his son is not
anything reflective to his character and thus despises him. The book itself focuses on a
community that is losing its culture to the White colonialists despite standing tall and trying to
salvage it and still ended up collaborating.

The fundamental moral unit here is relationship between people and is based on the belief that care should be given to those who can’t take care of themselves.
Some Eastern theories promote the overall good of the community first and foremost. And some indigenous theories stress human’s connection with the world as a whole, with all natural systems and species having an equal right to co-exist. People who grow up in these traditions expect that they and others will sacrifice individual self-interest for the good of the group and the environment. Let’s consider a decision you might encounter if you were a member of your local city council. There is a 50 acre parcel of land in your city’s jurisdiction that was designated a hundred years ago to remain open space. Now the area contains some ancient Native burial grounds, but the tribe members a hundred years and tribe members today are happy with the designated use as long as the woodlands around the burial mounds stay intact. A developer would like to build a shopping mall there. As a city council member, you get to decide how that land will be used today: should it remain a park or become a shopping mall?
If you make your choice based only on the good that comes to individuals, you might be tempted to go with the shopping mall. The mall will provide jobs for many of the people in the community who are out of work and the additional income from the taxes from the new property owner and the businesses will allow the city to reduce taxes for individual home owners.
Which choice best advances the overall good of the community in which I live? The policy choice made previously to protect the land respected human connections to natural systems and was sensitive to the culture and history of a minority group. Affirming that decision helps all people in the community maintain trust in government.

One implication is that we often have a tendency to judge others unfairly because we do not take into account the situational factors that may have caused them to make unethical decisions. We see that other people have done bad things, and we assume that it is because of their character rather than the fact that they were, perhaps, striving so hard to please their superiors that they did not even notice the ethical issue that they flubbed.
According to some psychologists, the other side of the coin from the fundamental attribution error is the actor-observer bias which is people’s tendency to over-emphasize the role of the situation in their own behaviors. They insist there’s nothing wrong with their character, because their errors are accounted for by some situational factor—the boss’s pressure, the need to feed their families, etc.
Francesca Gino writes: "In particular, one mistake we systematically make is known as the correspondence bias. When making attributions as we evaluate others, we tend to ascribe too little influence to the situation and too much to their dispositions. In simpler terms, we tend to believe that people’s behavior reflects their unique dispositions and skills, when many times it actually reflects aspects of the situation in which they find themselves." This sounds a lot like a different name for the fundamental attribution error.
