ביצירותיו קיבלה המציאות היבט תלת ממדי סביבתי
בוטה וברור. מבחינתו הוויית הכרך העירוני לא
התבטאה בעולם הנוצץ והפרסומי, אלא בחומרים
הלקוחים מ"תרבות הביבים" של שכונות העוני
ואזוריה המזרחיים של מנהטן.
4. אודלנבורג ביקש לבטא את הוולגריות של אמריקה
באמצעות "סביבות" ו"אירועים". הרחוב שימש בעבורו
לא רק מקום שממנו נלקחו האובייקטים ליצירותיו
אלא אף נושא יצירתו המוקדמת.
בעבודותיו הוא מעביר את תרבות הרחוב הנמוכה
לגלריה לאמנות ובכך מעניק לה לגיטמציה. אולדנברג
מדבר על כך שבעידן השפע יש להכיר בחיים
האמיתיים ולא רק במוצרי הצריכה, בפרסומות וכו'.
5. יצירתו "אטב הכביסה" היא הגדלה מדויקת של
החפץ המקורי לגובה 5.31 מטרים.
אולדנברג השתמש דווקא בחפץ יומיומי וחסר
חשיבות כאטב כביסה, הנמצא בכל בית. על ידי
הגדלתו והצבתו הוא נטרל אותו מן השימוש
היומיומי שלו, והעניק לו מעמד של חפץ אמנות.
הפער בין המעמד החדש לבין מעמדו המקורי של
הפסל יוצר אפקט קומי ומעלה תמיהה אצל
הצופים.
6. פער זה מצטמצם כאשר הצופה מקשר בין
החפץ לבין מיקומו – בניין משרדי הניצב
במרכז העיר מול עיריית פילדלפיה. זיווג זה
יוצר תחושה דואלית של ציניות ורצינות.
תחושת הציניות נובעת מן ההקשר הביתי של
אטב הכביסה, המזכיר לעובדים בבניין כי הגיע
הזמן לחזור לביתם, ותחושת הרצינות נובעת
מהשימוש המשרדי באטבים ובתופסני נייר
למיניהם.
7. • היצירה הזו מאתגרת את המדיום ממנו היא יוצאת בכך שהיא מושכת את תשומת
ליבו של הצופה וגורמת לו לתהות ואולי אף לצחוק. הגודל של האטב ומיקומו אל מול
בניין העירייה מעלה תחושות רבות, כפי שציינתי קודם, של ציניות מול רצינות ובכך
מדגישה את המסר של האומן.
• המדיום המקורי של היצירה והשינוי: אולדנבורג מתאר כי הסטודיו שלו מלא באטבי
כביסה בהם הוא נעזר לחבר את חלקי הפסלים שלו. עם הזמן החל לראות אותם
כמבנים גדולים בהרבה ממה שהם ואז החל לחשוב על הגדלתם.
• היצירה עתידה להשתייך למדיום:אולדנבורג יוצר רדי מייד חדש – כלומר לא החפץ
עצמו הוא זה שמוצג, אלא חיקוי מושלם שלו. נעשה שינוי של גודל האובייקט ושינוי
מצב הצבירה שלו בכך שהוא הופך ממוצר יומיומי לסמל הנצחה של תרבות הצריכה.
8. היצירה הנוספת שבחרתי היא של דושאן מרסל, "המסרק". דושאן משפיע באופן ישיר על
יצירותיו של אולדנבורג. דושאן הוא הראשון שמתייחס לחפצי הרדיי מייד - חפץ תעשייתי
שימושי המוצג ע"י האומן כעבודת אומנות. יצירה זו כמו היצירה של אולדנבורג מתמקדת
בחפצים יומיומיים ההופכים בידי האומן ליצירת אומנות ובכך מאתגרים את גבולות
האומנות. דושאן רצה להציב את המחשבה האסתטית האמנותית הטהורה כתחליף לצורך
ביצירת אובייקטים ממשיים.
