Jerome David Salinger was an American novelist born in New York in 1919. He attended several prep schools and military academies before studying at NYU and Columbia. He began publishing short stories in the 1940s. His most famous work, 1951's The Catcher in the Rye, was an immediate popular success about adolescent alienation. After its success, Salinger became reclusive and published less frequently. He was influenced by various Eastern religions later in life, particularly Hinduism, and wished to be cremated after death according to Hindu traditions.
