Presentation by Rodrigo Arenas at ION Santiago in Chile on 28 October 2014 during the "Routing Around Catastrophe" panel.
How do we improve the resilience and security of the Internet’s underlying routing infrastructure? While Internet routing has worked well over the years, there have been instances where errors and misconfigurations have caused stability issues. Malicious attackers have also created denial of service attacks and other issues by spoofing IP addresses and manipulating routing tables. What are the best practices we can use to help mitigate these kind of attacks?
In this session, our panel of experts will address technologies such as BCP 38, anti-spoofing, and BGP security efforts that can help secure the routing infrastructure. They will also consider the Internet Society’s new Routing Manifesto, which aims to introduce a minimum set of security measures which, if deployed on a wide scale, could result in visible improvements to the security and resilience of the global routing system.
The .nl registry (Netherlands) has over 5 million domain names registered and is the largest DNSSEC signed zone in the world with over 1 million signed domains. SIDN, the .nl registry, took a collaborative approach to deploying DNSSEC by initiating and coordinating mass signing among their 1700 registrars. Through support from PowerDNS and the Dutch government, they were able to sign 239 registrars to date and continue working on further steps like DNSSEC secure transfers and health monitoring.
Presentation from ION Djibouti on 2 June 2014 by Alain Aina.
The Internet Society produces maps that provide a view into global DNSSEC deployment and break the deployment status into five categories: experimental, announced, partial, DS in root, and operational. These maps are a bit different from other DNSSEC statistics sites in that they contain both factual, observed information (for the “DS in Root” and “Operational” states) and also information based on news reports, presentations and other collected data (the first three states). Where are African ccTLDs on their path toward full DNSSEC deployment?
The document summarizes the work of the Deployment & Operationalization team at the Internet Society. The team works to promote widespread adoption of key Internet protocols through their Deploy360 program. Deploy360 provides educational resources on topics like IPv6, DNSSEC, and TLS through a web portal and events. It aims to help network operators, developers, and others implement open standards. The team collaborates with industry experts to develop tutorials, case studies and other technical guides. They also hold ION conferences around the world to provide hands-on training.
Initial survey results from the Internet Society "Operators & the IETF" survey.
The goal of the project is ultimately to facilitate communications between the operator community and the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) to help ensure that operational realities inform the development of key standards. We want to foster a larger and more engaged operator community around the IETF and protocol development work. In order to ensure that we take the most effective action, we will focus initially on talking to operators around the world, gathering information and defining the problem statement(s).
The first phase of this project was a survey of the operator community which was conducted over the first half of this year. That survey was closed on 1 July 2014 with over 350 responses. Thank you to everyone who participated!
The document discusses Best Current Operational Practices (BCOP) efforts around the world to document and share operational knowledge. It provides updates on several regional BCOP groups, including those under AfNOG, RIPE, LACNOG, NANOG, and JANOG. It describes draft documents these groups are working on covering topics like IPv6, DNSSEC, BGP, Ethernet OAM, and more. It encourages participation in BCOP efforts to further develop and review documents describing best practices.
This document provides information on the basics of playing violin including fingering techniques, music notation like clefs and time signatures, common notes, note and rest values, scale types, and how to play a tune. It covers fundamental musical concepts for violin to help a beginner learn how to read music and start playing songs.
Presentation given at ION Santiago in Chile on 28 October 2014. Opening slides explain the Deploy360 program, ION Conferences, and how to work together to help increase real-world use of technologies such as IPv6, DNSSEC, DANE, TLS, and routing security best practices.
Presentation during ION Belfast session called "IPv6 Success Stories: Network Operators Tell All!" from Timo Hilbrink of XS4ALL in the Netherlands.
In this session, we invite network operators to share their IPv6 success stories and lessons learned along the way that can help other managers of networks deploy IPv6. How did they do it? What technical, organizational, and political challenges did they face? Attendees will gain vital insight as network operators lay out the stages for IPv6 implementation—creating the business case for management buy-in, initiating a planning process, flipping the switch, and, finally, gathering measurements and proving success.
ION Tokyo, 17 November 2014, slides from Akihiro Tsuru given during the "IPv6 in Asia Pacific: Untangling the Web" panel.
IPv6 has been available from the Regional Internet Registries for over 15 years. How do different types of organizations formulate their plans to deploy IPv6, and what’s taking so long? Will reliance on Carrier Grade NATs (CGNs) affect the development and accessibility of the Internet in Asia Pacific? Panelists will discuss IPv6 vs. CGNs: issues, problems and solutions. The discussion will also encompass panelists’ experiences deploying IPv6 in Asia Pacific; the technical, organizational, and political challenges they face, and the current status of their deployments.
The document discusses Singapore's efforts to promote IPv6 adoption through increasing demand and supply. It summarizes IDA Singapore's initiatives to drive awareness, competency, and implementation of IPv6. These include working with government agencies and websites to adopt IPv6, ensuring local users can access IPv6 content, training programs and courses, conferences, and an innovation competition to promote IPv6 skills. The goal is for Singapore to transition fully to IPv6 to support future internet demands and avoid issues that may arise from relying solely on IPv4.
