VI. The Church.
Introduction to 1 Timothy
•The church in Ephesus was begun by Priscilla and
Aquilla (Acts 18) with Paul on his 2nd missionary
journey.
•Paul returned and served as pastor for 3 years during
his 3rd missionary journey (Acts 19).
•Timothy followed Paul as pastor of this church and
was serving when this letter was written to Timothy.
Paul’s Letters to Timothy
•Paul is addressing specific problems in the church.
•Timothy was familiar with the theology of Christianity,
so Paul’s letters do not elaborate on these subjects.
•The interpretations of Paul’s instructions for the
church are still greatly debated today.
What are the purposes of the church?
• Acts 1:8 NKJV
8 “But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has
come upon you; you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem,
and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”
• Acts 2:42 NKJV
42 And they continued steadfastly in the apostles’ doctrine
and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in prayers.
The Church Worshipping
•John 4:23-24 NKJV
23 “But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true
worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth;
for the Father is seeking such to worship Him. 24 God is
Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in
spirit and truth.”
Church Areas Addressed in Today’s Lesson
1 Timothy 1 & 2
•Doctrine – False Teachers.
•Prayer – Focus.
•Worship – Prescriptions and Leadership.
The City of Ephesus
•Best known for its temple of Artemis or Diana, the
Greek goddess.
•The temple was one of the 7 wonders of the ancient
world.
•Ephesus was the capital of the Roman province of Asia
(modern Turkey).
•It was an important political, educational and
commercial center of the area.
The City of Ephesus
Temple of Artemis (Diana)
Who was Timothy?
•Timothy means “one who honors God.”
•Timothy was raised in Lystra, a city in Galatia.
•Timothy accepted Christ during Paul’s 1st missionary
journey.
•His grandmother (Lois) and mother (Eunice) were
devout Jews who became Christians.
•Timothy’s father was Greek and may have died before
the family became Christians.
Who was Timothy?
•Timothy joined Paul on his 2nd missionary journey
when he came through Lystra.
•Timothy was probably in his late teens or early 20’s
when he joined Paul.
•Timothy became Paul’s disciple, friend and co-laborer
for the rest of Paul’s life.
1 Timothy 1:1-2 NKJV
1 Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ, by the commandment
of God our Savior and the Lord Jesus Christ, our hope,
2 To Timothy, a true son in the faith:
Grace, mercy, and peace from God our Father and Jesus
Christ our Lord.
1 Timothy 1:3-4 NKJV
3 As I urged you when I went into Macedonia—remain
in Ephesus that you may charge some that they teach
no other doctrine, 4 nor give heed to fables and endless
genealogies, which cause disputes rather than godly
edification which is in faith.
•“you may charge some”
•It demands that a subordinate obey an order from a
superior officer.
“no other doctrine,”
• The gospel message is God’s free and sovereign act of
mercy in granting salvation through the death and
resurrection of Christ.
• This salvation is totally apart from any human work or
merit.
• “Judaizers” were Christian Jews who were perverting the
gospel by adding Jewish rituals as a pre-requisite to
salvation.
• The word “Judaizers” is not in the bible but is used by bible
scholars as a name for these Christian Jews who were
perverting the gospel.
“fables and endless genealogies,”
•Legends and fanciful stories manufactured from
elements of Judaism.
•These were allegorical and fictitious interpretations of
Old Testament genealogical lists.
•Misinterpretations of the Old Testament were used to
create conflicts among Christians.
1 Timothy 1:5-7 NKJV
5 Now the purpose of the commandment is love from a
pure heart, 6 from a good conscience, and from sincere
faith, from which some, having strayed, have turned
aside to idle talk, 7 desiring to be teachers of the law,
understanding neither what they say nor the things
which they affirm.
•“the commandment” is to charge or call out the false
teachers.
Summary of 1 Timothy 1:8-11
•Paul describes false teachers who do not understand
the purpose of the law (10 Commandments).
•They teach it is a method of self-righteousness.
•The law is really a means to self-condemnation, sin,
conviction, repentance and pleading to God for mercy.
•Romans 7:7b NKJV
7b I would not have known sin except through the law.
For I would not have known covetousness unless the
law had said, “You shall not covet.”
Summary of 1 Timothy 1:12-16
•This is Paul’s testimony of his own salvation.
•Paul provides a contrast between his proper
understanding of the law and the misconceptions of
the false teachers.
•Paul expresses the emptiness of false doctrines
compared to the glory of the true gospel.
1 Timothy 1:17 NKJV (Paul’s Doxology)
17 Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, to God
who alone is wise, be honor and glory forever and ever.
Amen.
1 Timothy 1:18-20 NKJV
18 This charge I commit to you, son Timothy, according
to the prophecies previously made concerning you, that
by them you may wage the good warfare, 19 having
faith and a good conscience, which some having
rejected, concerning the faith have suffered shipwreck,
20 of whom are Hymenaeus and Alexander, whom I
delivered to Satan that they may learn not to
blaspheme.
Review of 1 Timothy 1:18-20
•Paul is encouraging Timothy to fight the battle against
the enemies of Christ and the gospel.
•Faith and a good conscious are like a rudder guiding a
ship; it guides us through the seas of life and truth.
•Hymenaeus and Alexander were possibly elders who
were false teachers and Paul cast them out of the
church.
•Paul considered them as agents of Satan in the
church.
1 Timothy 2:1-4 NKJV (Prayer in the Church)
1 Therefore I exhort first of all that supplications,
prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for
all men, 2 for kings and all who are in authority, that we
may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and
reverence. 3 For this is good and acceptable in the sight
of God our Savior, 4 who desires all men to be saved
and to come to the knowledge of the truth.
1 Timothy 2:5-7 NKJV (Salvation in Christ Alone)
5 For there is one God and one Mediator between God
and men, the Man Christ Jesus, 6 who gave Himself a
ransom for all, to be testified in due time, 7 for which I
was appointed a preacher and an apostle—I am
speaking the truth in Christ and not lying—a teacher of
the Gentiles in faith and truth.
The Priority of Prayer for the Church
•We are to pray for ALL people.
•We are to pray for all of those in authority over us.
•Nero was king at this time – a vicious and cruel
blasphemer and persecutor of those of the faith, and
the church was instructed to pray for him.
•We are to pray for the salvation of ALL people.
Paul now focuses on the roles of men and
women in the church in 1 Timothy 2.
•There has been much debate over the interpretation
of these verses over the centuries.
•The context of these verses must be considered.
•The Southern Baptist Convention has been fairly
consistent in their interpretation and application.
•This is not a salvation issue.
1 Timothy 2:8 NKJV (Men of Prayer)
8 I desire therefore that the men pray everywhere,
lifting up holy hands, without wrath and doubting;
•Men are to lead prayers with “holy hands” which is
with pure and unpolluted hearts.
•“Hands” symbolize the activities of life.
•“Doubting” can also mean dissension.
1 Timothy 2:9-10 NKJV (Women of Good Works)
9 in like manner also, that the women adorn themselves
in modest apparel, with propriety and moderation, not
with braided hair or gold or pearls or costly clothing,
10 but, which is proper for women professing godliness,
with good works.
•Women are to also lead holy lives with modesty and
dress that is not distracting to worshipers.
•Women also show godliness with good works.
1 Timothy 2:11 NKJV
11 Let a woman learn in silence with all submission.
•Women in the 1st century were not encouraged to
pursue education.
•Paul is encouraging women to be taught theology.
•Silence and submission introduce Paul’s approach to
teaching in a congregational assembly in the next
verse (v.12).
1 Timothy 2:12-14 NKJV
12 And I do not permit a woman to teach or to have
authority over a man, but to be in silence. 13 For Adam
was formed first, then Eve. 14 And Adam was not
deceived, but the woman being deceived, fell into
transgression.
•Paul describes in 1 Timothy 3 that the role of Pastor
(bishop, elder) of the church is for a man (male).
Support for Application of Role (Gender)
Assignments for Church Pastors
•Paul refers back to Adam (male) created first and Eve
(woman) created next as a “help-mate.”
•Eve was deceived and Adam violated his leadership
role and followed Eve into sin.
•If the authority applied only to the church in Ephesus,
there would be no purpose for Paul to refer back to
the order of creation.
The Baptist Faith and Message
•“While both men and women are gifted for service in
the church, the office of pastor is limited to men as
qualified by Scripture.”
•The office of pastor is the authority Paul is describing
in 1 Timothy 2:12.
•Women can serve in any other position in the church
that does not place her in authority over the assembly
of the church (congregation).
Terms for opposing views for the roles of
women in church
•Complementarianism – the viewpoint that God
restricts women from serving in church leadership
roles and instead calls women to serve in equally
important, but complementary roles.
•Egalitarianism – the viewpoint that there are no
biblical gender-based restrictions on ministry in the
church.
The equality of women and men in God’s eyes
for salvation
•Galatians 3:26-28 NKJV
26 For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ
Jesus. 27 For as many of you as were baptized into
Christ have put on Christ. 28 There is neither Jew nor
Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither
male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus.
1 Timothy 2:15 NKJV (A Confusing Verse!)
15 Nevertheless she will be saved in childbearing if they
continue in faith, love, and holiness, with self-control.
•she = Eve (first woman).
•they = all women.
John Piper’s explanation of 1 Timothy 2:15
•The curse (judgment) for sin in the Garden for women
is pain in childbearing (Gen. 3:16).
•“saved in childbearing” means that women will be
saved through faith in Christ in spite of the curse
placed for childbearing.
•Love, holiness and self-control are manifestations of
their faith.
What are Satan’s goal for the church?
•Satan’s goal is to thwart the purposes of the church by
•Promoting false doctrine.
•Keeping believers from praying.
•Keeping believers from worshipping God in spirit and
truth.
•Preventing the world from hearing and accepting the
gospel.
•Creating confusion, conflict and division among
believers.
Lesson Application – How does Satan
accomplish his goals?
• John 15:18-19 NKJV
18 “If the world hates you, you know that it hated Me
before it hated you. 19 If you were of the world, the world
would love its own. Yet because you are not of the world,
but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates
you.”
• 2 Corinthians 4:4 NKJV
4 whose minds the god of this age has blinded, who do not
believe, lest the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ,
who is the image of God, should shine on them.
Examples of Satan’s methods
World
•False Teaching
•Myths
•Genealogies
•Roles of Men & Women
in Church
•Gender – you decide
•Abortion Rights
Church
•Authority of Scripture
•Canonized Scripture
•Individual responsibility
•Authority of Scripture &
Roles Defined
•Created by God
•Life begins at conception
Examples of Satan’s methods
World
•Prayer – Not in public
•Many paths to God
•Worship – about you
•Persecution
•Compromise
•Division
Church
•Public pray for ALL
•Jesus Christ Alone
•Worship – about God
•Steadfastness
•Truth in Scripture
•Unity
Closing Scripture – Pray for Unity in the Church.
•Colossians 3:15 NKJV
15 And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to
which also you were called in one body; and be
thankful.
The Plan of Hope & Salvation:
John 3:16-17 NKJV
16 “For God so loved the world that He gave His only
begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not
perish but have everlasting life. 17 For God did not send His
Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the
world through Him might be saved.”
John 14:6 NKJV
6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No
one comes to the Father except through Me.”
The Plan of Hope & Salvation:
Romans 3:23 NKJV
23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
Romans 6:23a NKJV
23a For the wages of sin is death,
• Death in this life (the first death) is 100%.
• Even Jesus, the only one who doesn’t deserve death, died in this life to pay
the penalty for our sin.
• The death referred to in Romans 6:23a is the “second death” explained in
Revelation 21:8.
The Plan of Hope & Salvation:
Revelation 21:8 NKJV
8 “But the cowardly, unbelieving, abominable, murderers, sexually immoral,
sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with
fire and brimstone, which is the second death.”
• Anyone who’s lifestyle is one or more of the sins listed in Revelation 21:8, will
experience the “second death” if they do not repent.
• To Repent means to turn around, to go in the opposite direction, to turn away from sin and to
come to Jesus.
Romans 5:8 NKJV
8 But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners,
Christ died for us.
The Plan of Hope & Salvation:
Romans 6:23b NKJV
23b but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our
Lord.
Revelation 21:7 NKJV
7 “He who overcomes shall inherit all things, and I will
be his God and he shall be My son.”
• Romans 10:9-10 explains to us how to be overcomers.
The Plan of Hope & Salvation:
Romans 10:9-10 NKJV
9 that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and
believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead,
you will be saved. 10 For with the heart one believes unto
righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto
salvation.
Romans 10:13 NKJV
13 For “whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.”
The Plan of Hope & Salvation:

  • 5. References •MacArthur, John, The MacArthur Study Bible NKJV (Nashville, Nelson Publishing, 1997). •ESV Study Bible (Wheaton, IL, Crossway, 2008). •The Baptist Faith and Message, June 14, 2000; Section VI. The Church.
  • 6. Introduction to 1 Timothy •The church in Ephesus was begun by Priscilla and Aquilla (Acts 18) with Paul on his 2nd missionary journey. •Paul returned and served as pastor for 3 years during his 3rd missionary journey (Acts 19). •Timothy followed Paul as pastor of this church and was serving when this letter was written to Timothy.
  • 7. Paul’s Letters to Timothy •Paul is addressing specific problems in the church. •Timothy was familiar with the theology of Christianity, so Paul’s letters do not elaborate on these subjects. •The interpretations of Paul’s instructions for the church are still greatly debated today.
  • 8. What are the purposes of the church? • Acts 1:8 NKJV 8 “But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.” • Acts 2:42 NKJV 42 And they continued steadfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in prayers.
  • 9. The Church Worshipping •John 4:23-24 NKJV 23 “But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship Him. 24 God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.”
  • 10. Church Areas Addressed in Today’s Lesson 1 Timothy 1 & 2 •Doctrine – False Teachers. •Prayer – Focus. •Worship – Prescriptions and Leadership.
  • 11. The City of Ephesus •Best known for its temple of Artemis or Diana, the Greek goddess. •The temple was one of the 7 wonders of the ancient world. •Ephesus was the capital of the Roman province of Asia (modern Turkey). •It was an important political, educational and commercial center of the area.
  • 12. The City of Ephesus
  • 13. Temple of Artemis (Diana)
  • 14. Who was Timothy? •Timothy means “one who honors God.” •Timothy was raised in Lystra, a city in Galatia. •Timothy accepted Christ during Paul’s 1st missionary journey. •His grandmother (Lois) and mother (Eunice) were devout Jews who became Christians. •Timothy’s father was Greek and may have died before the family became Christians.
  • 15. Who was Timothy? •Timothy joined Paul on his 2nd missionary journey when he came through Lystra. •Timothy was probably in his late teens or early 20’s when he joined Paul. •Timothy became Paul’s disciple, friend and co-laborer for the rest of Paul’s life.
  • 16. 1 Timothy 1:1-2 NKJV 1 Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ, by the commandment of God our Savior and the Lord Jesus Christ, our hope, 2 To Timothy, a true son in the faith: Grace, mercy, and peace from God our Father and Jesus Christ our Lord.
  • 17. 1 Timothy 1:3-4 NKJV 3 As I urged you when I went into Macedonia—remain in Ephesus that you may charge some that they teach no other doctrine, 4 nor give heed to fables and endless genealogies, which cause disputes rather than godly edification which is in faith. •“you may charge some” •It demands that a subordinate obey an order from a superior officer.
  • 18. “no other doctrine,” • The gospel message is God’s free and sovereign act of mercy in granting salvation through the death and resurrection of Christ. • This salvation is totally apart from any human work or merit. • “Judaizers” were Christian Jews who were perverting the gospel by adding Jewish rituals as a pre-requisite to salvation. • The word “Judaizers” is not in the bible but is used by bible scholars as a name for these Christian Jews who were perverting the gospel.
  • 19. “fables and endless genealogies,” •Legends and fanciful stories manufactured from elements of Judaism. •These were allegorical and fictitious interpretations of Old Testament genealogical lists. •Misinterpretations of the Old Testament were used to create conflicts among Christians.
  • 20. 1 Timothy 1:5-7 NKJV 5 Now the purpose of the commandment is love from a pure heart, 6 from a good conscience, and from sincere faith, from which some, having strayed, have turned aside to idle talk, 7 desiring to be teachers of the law, understanding neither what they say nor the things which they affirm. •“the commandment” is to charge or call out the false teachers.
  • 21. Summary of 1 Timothy 1:8-11 •Paul describes false teachers who do not understand the purpose of the law (10 Commandments). •They teach it is a method of self-righteousness. •The law is really a means to self-condemnation, sin, conviction, repentance and pleading to God for mercy. •Romans 7:7b NKJV 7b I would not have known sin except through the law. For I would not have known covetousness unless the law had said, “You shall not covet.”
  • 22. Summary of 1 Timothy 1:12-16 •This is Paul’s testimony of his own salvation. •Paul provides a contrast between his proper understanding of the law and the misconceptions of the false teachers. •Paul expresses the emptiness of false doctrines compared to the glory of the true gospel.
  • 23. 1 Timothy 1:17 NKJV (Paul’s Doxology) 17 Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, to God who alone is wise, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen.
  • 24. 1 Timothy 1:18-20 NKJV 18 This charge I commit to you, son Timothy, according to the prophecies previously made concerning you, that by them you may wage the good warfare, 19 having faith and a good conscience, which some having rejected, concerning the faith have suffered shipwreck, 20 of whom are Hymenaeus and Alexander, whom I delivered to Satan that they may learn not to blaspheme.
  • 25. Review of 1 Timothy 1:18-20 •Paul is encouraging Timothy to fight the battle against the enemies of Christ and the gospel. •Faith and a good conscious are like a rudder guiding a ship; it guides us through the seas of life and truth. •Hymenaeus and Alexander were possibly elders who were false teachers and Paul cast them out of the church. •Paul considered them as agents of Satan in the church.
  • 26. 1 Timothy 2:1-4 NKJV (Prayer in the Church) 1 Therefore I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men, 2 for kings and all who are in authority, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and reverence. 3 For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior, 4 who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.
  • 27. 1 Timothy 2:5-7 NKJV (Salvation in Christ Alone) 5 For there is one God and one Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus, 6 who gave Himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time, 7 for which I was appointed a preacher and an apostle—I am speaking the truth in Christ and not lying—a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and truth.
  • 28. The Priority of Prayer for the Church •We are to pray for ALL people. •We are to pray for all of those in authority over us. •Nero was king at this time – a vicious and cruel blasphemer and persecutor of those of the faith, and the church was instructed to pray for him. •We are to pray for the salvation of ALL people.
  • 29. Paul now focuses on the roles of men and women in the church in 1 Timothy 2. •There has been much debate over the interpretation of these verses over the centuries. •The context of these verses must be considered. •The Southern Baptist Convention has been fairly consistent in their interpretation and application. •This is not a salvation issue.
  • 30. 1 Timothy 2:8 NKJV (Men of Prayer) 8 I desire therefore that the men pray everywhere, lifting up holy hands, without wrath and doubting; •Men are to lead prayers with “holy hands” which is with pure and unpolluted hearts. •“Hands” symbolize the activities of life. •“Doubting” can also mean dissension.
  • 31. 1 Timothy 2:9-10 NKJV (Women of Good Works) 9 in like manner also, that the women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with propriety and moderation, not with braided hair or gold or pearls or costly clothing, 10 but, which is proper for women professing godliness, with good works. •Women are to also lead holy lives with modesty and dress that is not distracting to worshipers. •Women also show godliness with good works.
  • 32. 1 Timothy 2:11 NKJV 11 Let a woman learn in silence with all submission. •Women in the 1st century were not encouraged to pursue education. •Paul is encouraging women to be taught theology. •Silence and submission introduce Paul’s approach to teaching in a congregational assembly in the next verse (v.12).
  • 33. 1 Timothy 2:12-14 NKJV 12 And I do not permit a woman to teach or to have authority over a man, but to be in silence. 13 For Adam was formed first, then Eve. 14 And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived, fell into transgression. •Paul describes in 1 Timothy 3 that the role of Pastor (bishop, elder) of the church is for a man (male).
  • 34. Support for Application of Role (Gender) Assignments for Church Pastors •Paul refers back to Adam (male) created first and Eve (woman) created next as a “help-mate.” •Eve was deceived and Adam violated his leadership role and followed Eve into sin. •If the authority applied only to the church in Ephesus, there would be no purpose for Paul to refer back to the order of creation.
  • 35. The Baptist Faith and Message •“While both men and women are gifted for service in the church, the office of pastor is limited to men as qualified by Scripture.” •The office of pastor is the authority Paul is describing in 1 Timothy 2:12. •Women can serve in any other position in the church that does not place her in authority over the assembly of the church (congregation).
  • 36. Terms for opposing views for the roles of women in church •Complementarianism – the viewpoint that God restricts women from serving in church leadership roles and instead calls women to serve in equally important, but complementary roles. •Egalitarianism – the viewpoint that there are no biblical gender-based restrictions on ministry in the church.
  • 37. The equality of women and men in God’s eyes for salvation •Galatians 3:26-28 NKJV 26 For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus. 27 For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ. 28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus.
  • 38. 1 Timothy 2:15 NKJV (A Confusing Verse!) 15 Nevertheless she will be saved in childbearing if they continue in faith, love, and holiness, with self-control. •she = Eve (first woman). •they = all women.
  • 39. John Piper’s explanation of 1 Timothy 2:15 •The curse (judgment) for sin in the Garden for women is pain in childbearing (Gen. 3:16). •“saved in childbearing” means that women will be saved through faith in Christ in spite of the curse placed for childbearing. •Love, holiness and self-control are manifestations of their faith.
  • 40. What are Satan’s goal for the church? •Satan’s goal is to thwart the purposes of the church by •Promoting false doctrine. •Keeping believers from praying. •Keeping believers from worshipping God in spirit and truth. •Preventing the world from hearing and accepting the gospel. •Creating confusion, conflict and division among believers.
  • 41. Lesson Application – How does Satan accomplish his goals? • John 15:18-19 NKJV 18 “If the world hates you, you know that it hated Me before it hated you. 19 If you were of the world, the world would love its own. Yet because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you.” • 2 Corinthians 4:4 NKJV 4 whose minds the god of this age has blinded, who do not believe, lest the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine on them.
  • 42. • 45. The Plan of Hope & Salvation: John 3:16-17 NKJV 16 “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. 17 For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.” John 14:6 NKJV 6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.”
  • 46. The Plan of Hope & Salvation: Romans 3:23 NKJV 23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, Romans 6:23a NKJV 23a For the wages of sin is death, • Death in this life (the first death) is 100%. • Even Jesus, the only one who doesn’t deserve death, died in this life to pay the penalty for our sin. • The death referred to in Romans 6:23a is the “second death” explained in Revelation 21:8.
  • 47. The Plan of Hope & Salvation: Revelation 21:8 NKJV 8 “But the cowardly, unbelieving, abominable, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death.” • Anyone who’s lifestyle is one or more of the sins listed in Revelation 21:8, will experience the “second death” if they do not repent. • To Repent means to turn around, to go in the opposite direction, to turn away from sin and to come to Jesus. Romans 5:8 NKJV 8 But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
  • 48. The Plan of Hope & Salvation: Romans 6:23b NKJV 23b but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. Revelation 21:7 NKJV 7 “He who overcomes shall inherit all things, and I will be his God and he shall be My son.” • Romans 10:9-10 explains to us how to be overcomers.
  • 49. The Plan of Hope & Salvation: Romans 10:9-10 NKJV 9 that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. Romans 10:13 NKJV 13 For “whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.”
