The executive director of the Capital Area Literacy Coalition is writing a letter of recommendation for Heidi Limberg's application for the Rebecca Ann Binkowski Memorial Scholarship. Heidi worked as a VISTA volunteer under the director's supervision from 1994 to 1996, coordinating adult and family literacy programs. The director describes Heidi as the most competent and reliable of the VISTA volunteers, communicating care and concern to students while efficiently managing her tasks. He endorses Heidi's goal of obtaining a position in social work.

To Whom It May Concern:
I am delighted to have an opportunity to support Heidi Limberg's application for the
Rebecca Ann Binkowski Memorial Scholarship.
Heidi was a VISTA volunteer under my direction at the Capital Area Literacy Coalition from
June, 1994 to June, 1996. Because Heidi was the most competent and reliable of all of the
VISTA volunteers at that time, she was selected to be the coordinator ofthe adult and family
literacy and English language learning programs. In addition to her considerable
responsibilities in this position, Heidi volunteered to tutor in our Migrant Literacy Program
in the evenings.
Heidi's assignments at the Capital Area Literacy Coalition required a sensitivity to people as
most of the adults who carne to us were poor and functionally illiterate. The adults who
needed to learn English carne from 29 countries. Heidi was able to communicate her
concern and caring to all of our students and their tutors, but at the same time she was very
efficient and managed her office quite well.
In addition, Heidi arranged tutor training sessions and spoke at the monthly meetings. With
all of the various tasks she managed, Heidi was unfailingly calm and pleasant. She related
well to her fellow VISTA volunteers, the Capital Area Literacy Coalition staff, other agency
personnel and students and tutors. In dealing with tutors, Heidi was often in a problem
solving mode where she exhibited good judgment in difficult situations.
I endorse Heidi's goal of obtaining a position in Social Work. She will do well.
