Fall Newsletter 2016
Unité. Unidad. Umoja.
Ubumwe. Tawahhad.
Unity, in any language, means the
state of being united or forming a
complete and pleasing whole.
Unity is what I observed as I looked
out over the many faces of supporters,
friends, and family who attended Legacy Mission
Village’s banquet: Mesquite and Masterpieces.
Our hearts were greatly encouraged by
your presence and participation. I
can not overstate how important this
is for us and our mission. There
has been much in the news about
disunity and disparity. In stark
contrast, this gathering witnessed
love, care, and acceptance.
We are so grateful
and want to share with
you the fruits from
that evening:
Encouragement and
Fellowship: This was
our largest turnout,
over 230 friends and
supporters attended. Please
visit our Facebook for a
slideshow of some pictures
from that evening.
Support and Sustainability: Your
contributions helped us meet our
matching grant. Together, we raised the
most ever throughout the history of Legacy
Mission Village.
This evening of fun, food, and fellowship
would not have been possible without the
insight, commitment, and hard work by Annette
Crout, Leslee Bechtel, Jean Isenburg, Josephine Darwin,
Ebralie, and Aimee.
90% of your donations will be used to
expand our Middle Tennessee refugee
resettlement programs. How?
Growing LMV’s Family Mentoring / Life Skills Programs
by recruiting, increasing, and preparing our volunteer base to
accommodate the growing number of displaced men, women,
and children.
Building on the success of LMV’s new Citizenship Initiative.
Recruiting more volunteer tutors/instructors will help transform
more legal refugees into viable US Citizens through education,
mentoring, and fellowship.
Enhancing and equipping LMV’s
Kindergarten Readiness
Program. We will supplement
our teacher/mentor corps
by engaging and recruiting
institutions like Christ Presbyterian
Academy who embed the values of
serving others into the education of
their students.
Expanding LMV’s Free English as a
Second Language Program by recruiting,
increasing, and preparing our mentor base
to help improve English language
and communication skills.
Enlarging LMV’s After
School Program by
employing more
volunteer teachers to
tutor and guide legal
refugee children
through our
education process.
10% of your
donations will
be used to expand
our missions in East
Africa. This will include:
Increasing our support and supplies
to the Special Needs School in Kigali,
Rwanda. Legacy Mission Village partners
with the Presbyterian Church in Kanombe by
providing the teacher’s salary, furniture, and all
school supplies for 13 children. (LMV helped build
and fund the three classroom school.)
Funding the health insurance for families and
orphans that are most in need. Legacy Mission Village
partners with local churches in Rwanda to provide health
insurance coverage to over 500 impoverished individuals.
Continuing educational opportunities. In East Africa, 18
LMV-scholarship students completed school and graduated.
LMV has funded more than 37 student educations.
Restoring lives through health, education, and community
development. Legacy Mission Village, in partnership with church
and community, have trained over 75 HIV+ mothers so they can
generate extra income for medical supplies and family needs.
This has been possible because you are a part of Legacy
Mission Village. Your support sustains and encourages us.
– William Mwizerwa
So in Christ we, though many, form one body,
and each member belongs to all the others. – Romans 12:5

Maggie Rutherford and Elizabeth Cox
showed the love of Christ to these
special need students who have never had
the opportunity to learn and are often
shunned in their community. Maggie and
Elizabeth’s example changed the hearts of
the people in Busanza and showed them
how to love these children well.
“Friday we visited the special needs
school in Busanza. When we walked in,
an immediate and undeniable joy came
over us as we were greeted with hugs by
the 15 students that we will be working
with. There were a variety of disabilities
ranging in severities (from one who
cannot speak and is floor ridden to
another who was talking incessantly
in Kinyarwanda and running around
the classroom) with only one teacher
gracefully juggling it all.”
– Excerpt from Maggie and Liz’s blog

When We Walked in, an Immediate and
Undeniable Joy Came Over Us.
There’s NOTHINGEASYAbout
Becoming a USCitizen.
Paperwork!
Legal refugees must wait five
years before they can apply for
citizenship. And,
the paperwork is complex—one
small mistake can lead to rejection.
It requires an immigration law
expert to fill it out. Few refugees,
if any, can afford the fee. LMV
provides this service for free.
Exam!
In addition to the paperwork,
each adult must pass a Citizenship
exam—in English—testing their
knowledge of Civics, US History
and our language. LMV prepares
hard working legal refugees for the
exam and supports them in their
transition to viable U.S. Citizens.
Legacy Mission Village Kindergarten
Readiness Program orients and
prepares young children for school in
America. No easy task. Typically, legal
refugee children know little if any English
and even less about American customs.

Mentoring, guiding, and teaching is a large
part of a refugee’s orientation and transition
into our culture and communities. Something
as fun and simple as a field trip to a fire
station can make an everlasting impression on
a child — and the firemen.

Teachers, tutors, counselors AND
institutions like Christ Presbyterian Academy
play a significant role in this transition by
helping shepherd the young. Refugee families
experience community when volunteers pour
into them their time and attention.
It Takes a Village
to Prepare a Young
Refugee Child for
School in America

Congratulations Solange! She is the first of many
who will pass through our NEW Citizenship Initiative—
from Refugee to U.S. Citizen.
