Verisign operates two root DNS servers and all authoritative DNS servers for .com and .net. The Regional Internet Resolution Service (RIRS) provides a 1RU server appliance that gives direct access to a root DNS server and the .com/.net DNS server. The RIRS is designed to be embedded in an ISP's network or internet exchange point. It behaves like a standard BGP peer and offers decreased latency to critical DNS services while preventing outages from impacting a network's ability to reach those services. Interested parties can obtain a free RIRS node by meeting the technical requirements and provisioning through Verisign's website.
