How to enable file transfer acceleration in FileCatalyst Workflow

  1. 1. December Webinar: How to Enable File Transfer Acceleration in FileCatalyst Workflow Presenter: John Tkaczewski
  2. 2. Presenter Introduction John Tkaczewski • Co-Founder and President of Unlimi-Tech Software Inc – The creators of FileCatalyst products. • Oversees creative and technical vision for FileCatalyst Webmail and FileCatalyst Workflow • Blog: 2 | © Copyright FileCatalyst, 2013
  3. 3. Agenda • Overview: Why do you need File Transfer Acceleration? • Deployment Overview • Settings required in FileCatalyst Direct Server • Settings required in FileCatalyst Workflow • Other benefits of Integrating FileCatalyst Workflow with Direct Server • Upcoming Events • Questions? Please type them in the GotoWebinar box. 3 | © Copyright FileCatalyst, 2013
  4. 4. Overview: Why acceleration? Every network suffers from latency Latency is an expression of how much time it takes for a packet of data to get from one designated point to another. Network latency is measured by sending a packet and receiving an acknowledgement. This round-trip time (RTT) is the “latency”. Data Packet Visualize the flow of packets like water running through a hose. With FTP, there is a kink in the hose restricting the water’s flow. With FileCatalyst, the kink is removed and water can rush through unrestricted. 4 | © Copyright FileCatalyst, 2012 FTP is a very serial process. Each packet of data must be received before a new packet is sent = Decreased transfer speed FileCatalyst completely saturates the pipe by sending multiple blocks of data = Increased transfer speed Source File Destination File Acknowledgments Source File Destination File Acknowledgments
  5. 5. Overview: Why acceleration? • Is my line speed close to 10Mbps or more? • Am I transferring to and from geographically-diverse locations? • Is my network fragile and prone to packet loss? (Satellite, Wireless) 5 | © Copyright FileCatalyst, 2013
  6. 6. Overview: Why acceleration? Transfer Scenario Time Savings LA to Hong Kong RTT 250ms / Loss 1.5% 6 | © Copyright FileCatalyst, 2012 FTP 44 hours 20 minutes 43½ hours 138x faster LA to Auckland RTT 200ms / Loss 2% 35 hours 20 minutes 34½ hours 110x faster LA to London RTT 110ms / Loss 1% 16 hours 20 minutes 15½ hours 49x faster 6GB File over a T3 (45 Mbps) connection FileCatalyst
  7. 7. Deployment Overview (no acceleration) HTTP / FTP / FTPS Requests 7 | © Copyright FileCatalyst, 2013 Firewall FileCatalyst Workflow End user using web browser Internal FTP Server Third Party FTP Server Internet
  8. 8. Deployment Overview (with acceleration) 8 | © Copyright FileCatalyst, 2013 Firewall FileCatalyst Workflow End user using web browser HTTP Requests UDP, FTP, FTPS FileCatalyst Direct Internet FTP, FTPS, Remote Admin
  9. 9. Settings required in FileCatalyst Direct Server Take a note of port settings Create a regular user that will be used as a proxy account Enable Remote Administration and set password (Optional) 9 | © Copyright FileCatalyst, 2013
  10. 10. Settings required in FileCatalyst Workflow • Modify Configuration – Configure Internal Server – Disable Internal Server • Modify Configuration – FC Servers / Script Execution • Uncheck Use Internal for the Default Site, Click on Check Site • Enter Host, Username, Password and Port as configured in the previous slide in Direct Server • (Optionally) Configure Remote Admin, user name and password. 10 | © Copyright FileCatalyst, 2013
  11. 11. Other benefits of Integrating Workflow with Direct Server • Automatically create user accounts in both Direct and Workflow • Ability to support FTP, SFTP and FTPS • Remote Administration of Direct Server from Workflow • Central Management and Monitoring with FileCatalyst Central • Create multiple storage paths on the same server – Ex: F: drive could be for users and g: for post production 11 | © Copyright FileCatalyst, 2013
