6. Exercise: On the Dot
Some targets of the MDGs are listed on the sheet in
front of you.
Place an appropriately colored dot onto the square
for each goal:
• Blue if you think the probability towards meeting the goal
of the Philippines was high
• Yellow if the probability was just medium
• Red if the performance was low
10. Is the following statement
TRUE or FALSE:
“90% of all MDG targets have been achieved”
11. FALSE
Although countries
have made significant
progress towards
achieving some of the
MDGs, many of the
targets have not been
achieved and some
have seen little
progress.
12. Is the following statement
TRUE or FALSE:
“The MDGs which have not been achieved
will be abandoned at the end of 2015”

Why is the distinction of the process of how the goals were created important?
The SDGs are not a UN product alone – the 17 Goals are reflective of the personal goals of all the people surveyed and consulted during the post-2015 process
The MDGs in contrast, as this slide states, were created by UN experts and for that reason, cannot claim to be as inclusive or universal as the SDGs.
- Later on we will look at the structure, scope, approach and principles of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development
Sustainable Dev is a concept we’ve had since the 1980s but it is only now that it is being used as an all-encompassing principle for the global development agenda
Rebalancing and integration of all the crucial components of sustainable development
Beyond the three pillars of sustainable development, the SDGs center on People, Planet, Prosperity, Peace, and Partnerships.
How? The SDGs are a global call for partnerships and action to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure that all human being enjoy peace and prosperity.
The 2030 agenda is much more than the results framework of the SDGs. It includes a declaration with vision and principles, goals and targets, means of implementation and follow-up and review framework.
The list includes 232 indicators on which general agreement has been reached. Please note that the total number of indicators listed in the global indicator framework of SDG indicators is 244. However, since nine indicators repeat under two or three different targets (see below), the actual total number of individual indicators in the list is 232.
They build on the MDGs – the first six goals are six of the 8 MDGs. But the SDGs broaden the scope and raise the ambition for targeting. As an example, rather than looking at further reducing poverty over the coming 15 years, the SDGs speak of ending extreme poverty altogether.
The SDGs now also focus on economic issues, and on local and targeted actions. The SDGs are both means and ends to fight inequality and injustice. They seek to realize the human rights of all and to achieve gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls.
It seeks to take action against climate change, to improve living conditions in the present while safeguarding the resources of our planet for future generations, to ensure peace and justice by strengthening institutions and to bring together the strengths and resources of government, the private sector, civil society, and the youth.
The importance of the integration of different components of sustainable development
inclusion of marginalized, disempowered and excluded groups.
Many of the poorest and most marginalised groups have not benefitted enough from progress on the MDGs. The SDGs aim to finish the job of the MDGs, and do even more, to ensure that no one is left behind. The Goals demand us to reach the last mile of exclusion, addressing the economic, social, and political factors of disenfranchisement. This is a difficult task, but not impossible.
