Why SDG targets are not sufficient to met the sustainability targets?
1. OPINION ON SUSTANABILITY

Earth holds finite resources. To ensure our shared future, embracing sustainability is paramount.
However, poten al contradic ons within UN's SDGs raise concerns.
1. Growth vs. Control: SDGs seemingly push for both 7% GDP growth in developing na ons and
limi ng global warming below 1.5°C. This creates a poten al paradox – striving for development
while curbing environmental impact. Unchecked produc on and consump on exceeding planetary
limits, would only benefit wealthiest.
2. Growth's Flawed Promise: Despite a 271% rise in global GDP since 1990, $5/day poverty has
increased by 370 million. This suggests that relying solely on growth might be ineffec ve. Eradica ng
poverty through further growth would require an unsustainable 175% resource increase. Finding
alterna ve metrics beyond GDP that accurately reflect progress towards sustainability is crucial.
3. Redefining the SDG Compass: Current SDG Index, paints an inaccurate picture. Sweden's high
ranking, despite exceeding sustainable resource use, exemplifies this. In my opinion, UN needs to
redesign index, incorpora ng consump on-based ecological indicators instead of solely relying on
development-based ones.
In conclusion, while sustainability is cornerstone of thriving future, conflic ng goals that favour
specific groups must be avoided. Revising metrics like SDG Index to offer more accurate picture of
progress is crucial for naviga ng towards sustainable future, one that leaves no one and no na on
behind.
