The sunand its energy
Thesunis a life sourcethat aids the correctdevelopment of people, animals and plants, however its radiation
can prove harmfulto the skin.
For safe protection, it is essential to learn about the different types of solar radiation to which we are exposed.
All the energythat reachestheEarth is madeup mainlyof the following:
 Infra-redrays(IR): theyprovidethefeelingofheatand areresponsibleforsunstroke.Theyaccelerateskinageing.
 Visible light: thismodulatesthehormonefunctionsthankstoitsanti-depressiveeffect,butalsoacceleratesskinageing.
 UVArays: thesepenetratethedeepestlevelsofthedermisand aredirectlyresponsibleforphoto-ageingandco-responsibleforskin
cancers.
 UVB rays: thankstothese,theskintansbuttheypenetrateatepidermislevelandarethedirectcauseofskindamage(solarerythema

Factorsinfluencingsolarradiation
There areother factors that directly influence solar radiation. It is important to know all about them, so that we can protect ourselves correctly.
 Altitude:the higher the altitude the greater the solar intensity.
 Climate: clouds and damp weather absorb solar radiation, but do not block its passage.
 Obliquity: Solar intensity varies according to the angle of incidence on the Earth's surface.
 Time of day: between 11.00 am and 3.00 pm solar radiation is at its height.
 Season: the angleof incidence of solar radiation on the ground´s surface is different depending on the time of the yearor season.
 Surface: the reflection of the sun's rays varies according to the ground surface:

The skin andtanning
Tanning is the skin's natural response to exposure to UV rays
(particularlytheUVB type).
It is a cellular mechanism that begins when the UV rays pass through the
epidermis and activate the melanocytes. These go on to produce melanin
in large amounts. This natural protection is not enough to prevent the
sun'sharmfuleffects,asitdoes notstopallUVrays.

Skin phototypes
There aredifferent skin phototypes that define oursun tolerance. The different skin
phototypes aregrouped according to the Fitzpatrick scale criteria.
There are 6 different phototypes

Calmingand moisturisingtheskin
In order to calm and desensitise the skin, we recommend using the
Thermal ConcentrateWaterfromthe Aquathermrange.
This thermal concentrate is rich in concentrated mineral-thermal
source water, and is ideal for daily skin care. It reduces any
discomfort immediately, creating a pleasant feeling of freshness and
softness.
Indications:
Situations where it is necessary to calm the skin, solar erythema,
irritation,aftersport,travelling,dry,sensitiveorverysensitiveskins.
General advice for safe tanning
 Choose the adequate protection index ineach case: initially skinis exposed to the sun'srays for shorter
periods, using higherphoto protectors than usual.
 Usesun protection all year, evenwhen undera parasol or on cloudy days. Rememberthat the rayspass
throughclouds and some surfaces reflect the rays (sand, water, snow glare, grass, etc.).
 For skins that tan and do not usually burn, start with middle to high indices.
 At highaltitudes and intropical areas, and also at midday whensolar radiation is much moreintense, only
use high or veryhigh sun protection.
General advice for usingsun products correctly
 Always apply the photo protector to cleansed skin, before exposure to the sun.
 Spread a verygenerous amountof the photo protector, and rememberto apply to all exposed areas. In
order to calculatethe correctamount, apply at least one large spoonful of the product over each limb and two
over the trunk.Rememberthat if less is applied, protection may besignificantly reduced.
 To maintainprotection, re-apply the product frequently, particularly after perspiring, swimming ordrying
yourself.
 After being exposed to the sun, it is highlyadvisable to use a specific after sun product. It is better to use one
that is the same brand as the photo protectors that have been used, as their action is usually complementary.
Health authority warnings
 Excessive sun exposure is verydangerous to health.
 Do not stay inthe sun for verylong, even if youare using a sun protection product.
 Keep babies and childrenout of direct sunlight.
 If you are takinganymedication, consult your doctor before going out inthe sun.
 Avoid being in the sun at midday (in summerfrom 11.00am to 3.00pm).
 Wear hats to protect your head, and protect youreyeswith approved glasses for filtering UVrays.

  • 2. The sunand its energy Thesunis a life sourcethat aids the correctdevelopment of people, animals and plants, however its radiation can prove harmfulto the skin. For safe protection, it is essential to learn about the different types of solar radiation to which we are exposed. All the energythat reachestheEarth is madeup mainlyof the following:  Infra-redrays(IR): theyprovidethefeelingofheatand areresponsibleforsunstroke.Theyaccelerateskinageing.  Visible light: thismodulatesthehormonefunctionsthankstoitsanti-depressiveeffect,butalsoacceleratesskinageing.  UVArays: thesepenetratethedeepestlevelsofthedermisand aredirectlyresponsibleforphoto-ageingandco-responsibleforskin cancers.  UVB rays: thankstothese, theskintansbuttheypenetrateatepidermislevelandarethedirectcauseofskindamage(solarerythema andskincancer).

  • 4. Factorsinfluencingsolarradiation There areother factors that directly influence solar radiation.  Surface: the reflection of the sun's rays varies according to the ground surface: Snow Sand Water Grass Asphalt 85% 17% 5% 3% 2%
  • 5. The skin andtanning Tanning is the skin's natural response to exposure to UV rays (particularlytheUVB type). It is a cellular mechanism that begins when the UV rays pass through the epidermis and activate the melanocytes. These go on to produce melanin in large amounts. This natural protection is not enough to prevent the sun'sharmfuleffects, asitdoes notstopallUVrays. Epidermis Melanocyte UV

  • 22. General advice for safe tanning  Choose the adequate protection index ineach case: initially skinis exposed to the sun'srays for shorter periods, using higherphoto protectors than usual.  Usesun protection all year, evenwhen undera parasol or on cloudy days. Rememberthat the rayspass throughclouds and some surfaces reflect the rays (sand, water, snow glare, grass, etc.).  For skins that tan and do not usually burn, start with middle to high indices.  At highaltitudes and intropical areas, and also at midday whensolar radiation is much moreintense, only use high or veryhigh sun protection.
  • 23. General advice for usingsun products correctly  Always apply the photo protector to cleansed skin, before exposure to the sun.  Spread a verygenerous amountof the photo protector, and rememberto apply to all exposed areas. In order to calculatethe correctamount, apply at least one large spoonful of the product over each limb and two over the trunk.Rememberthat if less is applied, protection may besignificantly reduced.  To maintainprotection, re-apply the product frequently, particularly after perspiring, swimming ordrying yourself.  After being exposed to the sun, it is highlyadvisable to use a specific after sun product. It is better to use one that is the same brand as the photo protectors that have been used, as their action is usually complementary.
  • 24. Health authority warnings  Excessive sun exposure is verydangerous to health.
