3. A library is the treasure vault of ideas, the store house of
knowledge.
The library must be accepted as an integral part of the entire
social studies programmer.
The social studies is an area of school curriculum, demands
as lot of reading on the part of both the teachers and the
pupils.
There must be a necessity of book as well as non book
resources for the proper teaching and learning of social
studies.
4. The main objectives in building a social studies library are:
To create interest in the subject
To stimulate the students mind into a fine restlessness
To develop in the student a critical attitude and a capacity
for independent judgment
To cultivate in the student a taste for extra reading
To acquaint the pupils with the various forms in which
social studies materials can be had
5. BOOK RESOURCES:
Books are essential for presenting different points of view, for
providing adequate background for understanding the people. In
book resources we can include:
1. Text books: The library should have variety of most up to
date text books in different sections of social studies.
2. Unit booklets: The booklets on a variety of topics, must be
available in the library.
6. 1. Library materials: Inspirational and Imaginative literature,
particularly tales of adventure, should appear on children’s
hobbies.
REFERENCE MATERIALS:
The library should be fairly well- equipped with reference materials
or conventional reference books and non-conventional reference
books
Conventional reference books include dictionaries encyclopedias,
year books, atlas, maps, charts, pamphlets, handbooks, and manuals,
syllabi of different classes and books of knowledge.
7. The non conventional reference materials consist of all other
library books that may be employed for reference service of
any other kind.
NON-BOOK RESOURCES:
The field of social studies is concerned with happening in the
local community, the state , the nation and the world.
It helps to vitalize the teaching of social studies with the latest
in the field.
8. The following non book resources should be available in social studies
library:
1. Periodicals :some good periodicals and magazines which throw light
on current events and various aspects of Indian life showing art,
literature, music, dance etc., should be available in the library.
2. Pamphlets: pamphlets published by various government agencies and
bureaus for specialized services are also very important sources of
information about different walks of our social, economic and political
life.
3. News papers : It is essential that the social studies teacher pupils keep
well informed of events of national and international importance. a
newspaper is wonderful sources of such information.
9. It is necessary that pupils are taught the techniques of locating
relevant references and resources material quickly.
Assignment should be given in the form of problems.
Thus it will compel the pupils to investigate and examine
multiple sources.
