Agile environments can be both challenging and rewarding places for technical writers. Appropriate documentation is essential to the efficient production, testing, and acceptance of software. One way to be Agile with documentation to evolve it in parallel with the system development — delivering user stories, use cases, UI designs, system tests, manuals, and even online help — with just enough detail, and just in time. Come and explore some ways that you can be Agile with your documentation. This presentation isn't intended to provide a silver bullet solution, but it may give you some ideas beyond those famous (infamous?) 3x5 index cards.

In this fast growing and closely connected industry, being Agile is an advantage for vendors providing technical documentation services. This document explains six simple techniques with which you can establish documentation delivery as a practice in Agile. It also includes a comprehensive checklist for Agile Technical Writers. It also answers five prominent questions normally asked by Technical communicators.

Establishing documentation delivery as a practice in Agile

Abandoning any documentation in agile software development is widespread due to a mistaken interpretation of the agile value "working software over comprehensive documentation". Aren't there any forms of documentation in practice which are actually agile?

It has been said that “Microservices is SOA done right”. But really, what’s the difference between SOA and microservices and why is this question fundamental and has implications that could go beyond a potentially amusing twitter debate? Microservices have been around for a few years now. Many organisations with large and complicated systems that would truly benefit from introducing microservices can not do so in a vacuum; they are often operating in a context that has been heavily influenced by the SOA movement - for better or worse. This influence can often be easily discerned by existing technical choices, but what is less obvious but more important is the conceptual and architectural influence that the SOA approach is still exerting on how microservices systems even when technical legacy is not an issue. This talk is based on 4 years and a few microservices project that Tareq has been directly involved in at different stages of maturity. Tareq will share with you some fundamental differences between SOA and microservices, and following that you will learn a number of pragmatic lessons and simple design recommendations that hopefully help bridge the gap between the reality of organisations trying to adopt microservices today and the bleeding edge of theory and technology. Many of these lessons can help you design and build better microservices architectures today.

When identifying microservice boundaries, it is not enough to consider domains only. Other forces like organisational communication structures, and time, strongly suggest that you also should include other criteria in your considerations. Based on real-world experience of numerous projects, this talk takes a pragmatic walk and explores some of these other heuristics which should also be shaping your microservice decomposition thinking. These considerations may not on the surface seem that obvious, but if ignored, can just as easily lead to project failure. So whether you’ve already been through a painful project which tried to decompose boundaries by the book and failed, or you’re looking for some insight into other considerations often not spoken about, this talk is for you.

How do you known you're building the Force.com apps that business values the most? Behaviour Driven Development (BDD) has evolved to help developers create code that is self-documenting, has an automated test suite, and is open to change. This results in apps being much easier to adapt to the changes in your organization. Using features and scenarios, and a little neuro-linguistic programming, BDD also helps developers understand what business really wants the most. Not everything can be high priority! Join us to understand how to apply BDD to your Apex development to create clean code, and communicate effectively with business to build software that matters.

There are lots of misconceptions around what Agile says about documentation. One is that Agile has NO Documentation! That brings a smile to a few folks and drives others (like me) crazy! If you’ve read anything about Agile, you’ll hear that what it really preaches is ‘Just In Time’ or ‘Just Enough’ documentation. So what does that mean? Why aim for ‘Just Enough’ and not ‘Perfect’ Documentation? This seminar was presented at the IIBA group. Want this seminar presented at YOUR organization? just email sally@agiletransformation.com

DNA testing has become the "gold standard" of forensics, but linking an item of evidence to a person of interest isn't always clear cut. New open source tools allow DNA analysts to give statistical weight to evidentiary profiles that were previously unusable, letting juries weigh the evidence for themselves. Agile development can introduce new challenges to the information design process, but in the context of bringing technical writers into the development team and the development work itself, agile can present unique opportunities for technical writers. Earlier and deeper involvement in development projects enables technical writers to attain a rich understanding of a product’s design, operation, and end-users, and invites them to contribute to the engineering design and development process as they develop highly usable information for the product’s target audience. Technical writers have so much more to offer than end-user documentation, and it’s been my experience that working more closely with development teams enables writers to contribute on multiple fronts while they are cultivating the in-depth product knowledge necessary for writing high quality product documentation.

Industries across the globe are burgeoning. Stiff competition has permeated every stratum among enterprises. To sustain themselves in such an environment, companies are seeking new and improved methods by which they can revamp their business and also their existing production processes. With the emphasis firmly resting on the requirement for more robust processes, companies are transforming their project plans drastically. Now, the buzz and objective is to move on to a more adaptive process that ushers in change and provides results. Moreover, businesses need a process that offers enhanced flexibility which can alter the very nature of the process itself.

At the core, the job of a software developer is and has always been the same: writing good, elegant, sustainable and bug-free software that exceeds the expectations of your clients. But the context in which we do our job is changing and with it the skills required to be a great software developer. In this talk, I want to go through a couple of things that I think make the difference between a developer and a great developer. This includes some technical skills and practices, but also non-technical things that you might not consider relevant for a developer at first.

There are dozens of myths about Agile development. But before jumping into specific misconceptions, let’s have a look at some common business challenges: For senior-level execs: do you value revenue growth or cost containment? For project managers: do you value team efficiency or effectiveness? For developers: do you value code quantity or quality? In each scenario, you probably struggled to make a choice given that your two options were not mutually exclusive. Posing the question this way creates a false dilemma since you likely value both options but to varying degrees. So the better question is, of the two options, which do you value more?

In today's digital world, trust is key to customer relationships, but keeping it is a huge challenge. Customers are well-informed and empowered, quick to change brands if their trust is broken, even if it costs them more. This puts a lot of pressure on organizations to handle trust and safety issues with great care and transparency. The challenge, however, is real. Fragmented solutions have left privacy, legal, and security teams in a perpetual cycle of catch-up, struggling to update privacy notices, manage customer data rights, and answer lengthy security questionnaires—all while trying to prove ROI to the business. It's a thankless job, filled with repetition, tedious tasks, and constant interdepartmental coordination. Combine this with fast regulatory changes and the quick evolution of AI, and it becomes overwhelming. Join this webinar to learn more about TrustArc's new innovative solution Trust Center, the only unified, no-code online hub for trust and safety information built for privacy, security, compliance, and legal teams. Trust Center streamlines your path to compliance, shortens the pre-sales cycle, and reduces both legal and regulatory risks, saving time, effort, and cost. This webinar will review: - Why companies are building unified Trust Centers for a robust privacy program. - How unified Trust Centers streamline sales cycles, ensure regulatory compliance, and reduce operational bottlenecks. - How compliance, legal, security, GRC, and privacy teams benefit from a unified Trust Center in terms of needs, pains, and outcomes. - How TrustArc Trust Center saves time and work while reducing legal, reputational, and compliance risk by effectively managing policies, notices, terms, and disclosures, and providing real-time updates on subprocessors.

Join me in this session where I'll share our journey of building a fully serverless application that flawlessly managed check-ins for an event with a staggering 80 thousand registrations. We'll dive into three key strategies that made this possible. Firstly, by harnessing DynamoDB global tables, we ensured global service availability and data replication across regions, boosting performance and disaster recovery. Next, we'll explore how we seamlessly integrated real-time updates into the app using Appsync subscriptions, making the experience dynamic and engaging for users. Finally, I'll discuss how provisioned concurrency not only improved performance but also kept costs in check, highlighting the cost-effectiveness of serverless architectures. Through these strategies and the inherent scalability of serverless technology, our application effortlessly handled massive user loads without manual intervention. This session is a real world example to the power and efficiency of modern cloud-based solutions in enabling seamless scalability and robust performance with Serverless

This our Twelfth semiannual report on the global Cryptocurrency mining industry. Bitcoin is the world’s largest special purpose supercomputer. And it is globally decentralized. Millions of nodes all run the same open-source code to secure the Bitcoin network, create value, and put new transactions onto the distributed ledger. The latest Top500 list has just been announced at the ISC 2024 conference in Hamburg, and once again the Frontier supercomputer with 1.2 Exaflops peak performance is number one on the list. If assigned to SHA-256 hashing, Frontier would provide only the equivalent hash rate of about three cabinets of the latest high-end Bitcoin mining systems, costing less than 0.1% of Frontier’s cost. Michael Saylor, Chairman of MicroStrategy, has pointed out that GPUs are two orders of magnitude slower than the 5-nanometer technology of custom ASICs used for Bitcoin mining today. He makes the point that the Bitcoin network is unassailable by all of the hyperscale computing resources combined in AWS, Google, and Microsoft Azure cloud data centers today.

Syngulon’s technology expands the capacity for selection of microorganisms. The ability to select individual microbes with a behavior of interest is essential, whether for simple cloning at the bench, or for industry-scale production. Synthetic biology uses the concept of “bioengineering” to improve or modify existing genetic systems to create microbes with desired behaviors, and Syngulon uses this approach to develop its selection technologies. This selection technology is based on bacteriocins, ribosomally-produced peptides naturally made by most bacteria to kill competitive microbial species. These bacteriocins can have a limited or wide target range against other microbial species. This technology offers advantageous over antibiotic selection for several reasons: it avoids the use of antibiotics in the first place, helping to reduce the spread of antibiotic resistant microbes. The technology also increases product yield; as bacteriocins are generally smaller peptides, they do not impose a heavy metabolic burden on the producing cell. They can have a wide target specificity, helping to avoid genetic drift. Finally, our system is 100% plasmid-based (e.g. without chromosomal mutations), making it applicable for use in any E. coli strains.

Ruby has a lot of standard libraries from Ruby 1.8. I promote them democratically with GitHub today via default and bundled gems. So, I'm working to extract them for Ruby 3.4 continuously and future versions. It's long journey for me. After that, some versions may suddenly happen LoadError at require when running bundle exec or bin/rails, for example matrix or net-smtp. We need to learn what's difference default/bundled gems with standard libraries. In this presentation, I will introduce what's the difficult to extract bundled gems from default gems and the details of the functionality that Ruby's require and bundle exec with default/bundled gems. You can learn how handle your issue about standard libraries.
