Introduction to Construction Industry Final Project Report
1. Project Introduction
!
!
1.1 Project Background
!!
For this particular project, we were required to work in a group of two and find a specific land
within Taylor’s University Lakeside Campus area to initiate a small construction project. The
requirements was that the size of the land should not be more than 30m x 30m.
!
!
!
1.2 Project Objective
!
The objective of the construction project was to provide an architectural response to the idea of
students and staff seeking rest and serenity amidst the busy university campus. The space is
conceived as a resting space, whose relationship to place is transitory, and who seek privacy in the
openness of spectacular landscapes. The conceptual premise was to transform this transient rapport
with space into a place – or an architecture – that reflects their fluctuation between association and
disassociation, presence and absence, public and private.
!
The following pages is a compilation of data report and design ideas that we would like to propose
for a construction project that serves as a rest area for students and staff of Taylor’s University
Lakeside Campus.

!
2.1 Site Analysis
!
A. Location Plan
The following is the location plan of our 10m*16m site (Site 1) which is located on a balcony
terrace between Block C and Block D of Taylor’s Univesity Lakeside Campus and and the 7m*8m
site (Site 2) which is located in front of Truffles Restaurant. Site 1 is adjacent to the Tourism Centre
and the Legal Aid Centre and is accessible through a flight of stairs from Truffles Restaurant ,it is a
16 by 10 metres slab of concrete balcony, complete with railing. While Site 2 is a secluded timber
deck surrounded by bamboo plantations, in front of Truffles Restaurant.

The right section of the site faces the Legal
Aid Centre while the left section faces the
Tourism Centre. There are glass panels of
the office windows on both sides where the
staff can look through from inside the
office.
Side View
The back section of the site contains two
doors as it is connected to Lecture Theater
Hall 7 & 8. At the side of the back section
of the site also includes several air
conditioner ventilation machines.
Back View
The front section of the site overlooks the
commercial block as well as the lake.
There are several trees plantations that
stood upon the site, making the site slightly
more shady while giving the site its
secluded feeling as the trees obstruct the
view from below.

SITE 2: ORIGINAL CONDITION OF THE SITE
We have chosen this site because it has the potential to become a popular resting spot for students. The area
is covered by trees which help to provide shade and also help to lower surrounding temperature. The site has
existing furniture to let students rest.

Page ! of !5 14
There are two stone slab pathway that
connects the stairs of the amphitheatre to
the timber deck.
On the left side of the deck, there is a
wooden deck walkway connecting Truffles
Restaurant to the timber deck. Surrounding
the walkway was pots of bamboo
plantations.
On the timber deck are a few chairs and
tables for seatings. Considering the size of
the timber deck, the amount of chairs or the
design of the seating can be increased to
maximum the utilisation of space.
The back and right side of the timber deck
is a small hill slope to the waterfront. There
are multiple plantations surrounding the
deck, but at noon hour till early afternoon,
the deck still gets too sunny for the public
to come and rest.

2.3 Design Concept and Rationale
A. Main Concept
After carrying out site analysis and observation, we came up with a concept that supported and
complemented the characteristics of both our site. Both being highly enclosed by a fringe of trees, it
is a protected haven of quiet seclusion. Taylor’s University Lakeside Campus could undoubtedly
maximize potential and empty spaces such as this to the student’s and staff’s benefit, providing a
small spot of simple pleasure to visitors.
Our idea progression originated from the idea of calm and serenity. Inspired further from the
location of our site, which is wedged between two busy buildings, contributed to the idea of
creating a small space of comfort. Easily accessible by the public but not a public display, the site
was perfect for the concept we had in mind. An open yet secluded pocket park with seating and
lounging spaces to unwind and relax was what we were aiming for.
Page ! of !8 14
These are some references for our design concept. Each of these pocket parks features a
lot of greeneries and plantations that gives the place a cool, shady, relaxing ambience. The
usage of plants and its shadows also provides the space the its secludedness but still
remained the refreshing openness and airiness of a resting space.Another idea is that since
there are quite a few bamboo plantations and wooden, stone ornamentation around Truffles
and Thyme, we would like to incorporate those elements into the site, so that there is a
continuity between each places.

B. Design Proposal (SITE 1)
!
Our proposal for Site 1 was to construct a small enclosed resting room surrounded
by a dense layer of greeneries. To “rest in the forest” was the idea that we would
like to express through this construction. The site measures only 10 by 16 meters.
!
!
!
Page ! of !10 14
!

!
A forest, was inserted into
the architectural box, as a
dense green space and
within the dense green
space is another glass
and wooden box
designed for resting and
lounging purposes.

!
The garden acts as both a divider of
space in the building and a
connection device.
!
Openings in the walls are controlled
to direct views of the vegetation: the
room can be opened to reveal the
garden; then, views of the forest are
hidden again.
!
This gives visitors the feeling of
arriving in nature and moving away
from the urban landscape and acts
as a retreat from their hectic lifestyles
and tight work schedules.

B. Design Proposal (SITE 2)
!
Our proposal for site 2 is similar to site 1
to remained its continuity between the two
places. We would like to construct a semi-
enclosed glass and wooden room (As
shown in the figure at side) upon the deck
and add more furnitures within the deck
area to maximize the utilisation of the
space. The semi-wooden and glass room
will prevent the deck from being too
sunny so that the public can go there and
rest often even during the hot noon but
still not completely enclosed to makes
sure that the deck has the sufficient lighting and airiness as well as the perforation of
trees. At night the room is lighted,so that the public can also utilise the room.

The hammock can be tied to the trees beside the
wooden platform. By doing so, tired students can get
rested and be ready for the next class. Also, an
environment with trees and stones, it feels just like
nature and students get to experience nature in the
campus.
By adding a wooden bench, it maximizes the use of
space. More people can be fitted into the selected area
and it also provides more seats for people.
By doing so, more people can enjoy the nice scenery
as well as having a place to hang out with friends.
Students can do reading there or just sit there and rest.
To put a water cooler at the resting area so that
students can refill their water bottles and drink water
without having to walk so far to the nearest water
cooler. By doing so, students will not be as lazy to get
drinking water and they will stay hydrated. This
reduces the risk of getting sick.

  • 2. Introduction to Construction Industry Final Project Report 1. Project Introduction ! ! 1.1 Project Background !! For this particular project, we were required to work in a group of two and find a specific land within Taylor’s University Lakeside Campus area to initiate a small construction project. The requirements was that the size of the land should not be more than 30m x 30m. ! ! ! 1.2 Project Objective ! The objective of the construction project was to provide an architectural response to the idea of students and staff seeking rest and serenity amidst the busy university campus. The space is conceived as a resting space, whose relationship to place is transitory, and who seek privacy in the openness of spectacular landscapes. The conceptual premise was to transform this transient rapport with space into a place – or an architecture – that reflects their fluctuation between association and disassociation, presence and absence, public and private. ! The following pages is a compilation of data report and design ideas that we would like to propose for a construction project that serves as a rest area for students and staff of Taylor’s University Lakeside Campus. ! ! • 3. Introduction to Construction Industry Final Project Report 2. PROJECT PLAN ! 2.1 Site Analysis ! A. Location Plan The following is the location plan of our 10m*16m site (Site 1) which is located on a balcony terrace between Block C and Block D of Taylor’s Univesity Lakeside Campus and and the 7m*8m site (Site 2) which is located in front of Truffles Restaurant. Site 1 is adjacent to the Tourism Centre and the Legal Aid Centre and is accessible through a flight of stairs from Truffles Restaurant ,it is a 16 by 10 metres slab of concrete balcony, complete with railing. While Site 2 is a secluded timber deck surrounded by bamboo plantations, in front of Truffles Restaurant.

Page ! of !4 14 The right section of the site faces the Legal Aid Centre while the left section faces the Tourism Centre. There are glass panels of the office windows on both sides where the staff can look through from inside the office. Side View The back section of the site contains two doors as it is connected to Lecture Theater Hall 7 & 8. At the side of the back section of the site also includes several air conditioner ventilation machines. Back View The front section of the site overlooks the commercial block as well as the lake. There are several trees plantations that stood upon the site, making the site slightly more shady while giving the site its secluded feeling as the trees obstruct the view from below. Front View Fig 2. Panoramic view of the site
  • 5. Introduction to Construction Industry Final Project Report SITE 2: ORIGINAL CONDITION OF THE SITE We have chosen this site because it has the potential to become a popular resting spot for students. The area is covered by trees which help to provide shade and also help to lower surrounding temperature. The site has existing furniture to let students rest.
Page ! of !5 14 There are two stone slab pathway that connects the stairs of the amphitheatre to the timber deck. On the left side of the deck, there is a wooden deck walkway connecting Truffles Restaurant to the timber deck. Surrounding the walkway was pots of bamboo plantations. On the timber deck are a few chairs and tables for seatings. Considering the size of the timber deck, the amount of chairs or the design of the seating can be increased to maximum the utilisation of space. The back and right side of the timber deck is a small hill slope to the waterfront. There are multiple plantations surrounding the deck, but at noon hour till early afternoon, the deck still gets too sunny for the public to come and rest.

  • 8. Introduction to Construction Industry Final Project Report! 2.3 Design Concept and Rationale A. Main Concept After carrying out site analysis and observation, we came up with a concept that supported and complemented the characteristics of both our site. Both being highly enclosed by a fringe of trees, it is a protected haven of quiet seclusion. Taylor’s University Lakeside Campus could undoubtedly maximize potential and empty spaces such as this to the student’s and staff’s benefit, providing a small spot of simple pleasure to visitors. Our idea progression originated from the idea of calm and serenity. Inspired further from the location of our site, which is wedged between two busy buildings, contributed to the idea of creating a small space of comfort. Easily accessible by the public but not a public display, the site was perfect for the concept we had in mind. An open yet secluded pocket park with seating and lounging spaces to unwind and relax was what we were aiming for. Page ! of !8 14 These are some references for our design concept. Each of these pocket parks features a lot of greeneries and plantations that gives the place a cool, shady, relaxing ambience. The usage of plants and its shadows also provides the space the its secludedness but still remained the refreshing openness and airiness of a resting space.Another idea is that since there are quite a few bamboo plantations and wooden, stone ornamentation around Truffles and Thyme, we would like to incorporate those elements into the site, so that there is a continuity between each places.

  • 10. Introduction to Construction Industry Final Project Report! B. Design Proposal (SITE 1) ! Our proposal for Site 1 was to construct a small enclosed resting room surrounded by a dense layer of greeneries. To “rest in the forest” was the idea that we would like to express through this construction. The site measures only 10 by 16 meters. ! ! ! Page ! of !10 14 ! ! ! A forest, was inserted into the architectural box, as a dense green space and within the dense green space is another glass and wooden box designed for resting and lounging purposes. ! ! ! The glass and wooden box room within the dense greeneries which is intended to be created as a resting and lounging space.
  • 11. Introduction to Construction Industry Final Project Report! Page ! of !11 14 ! ! ! The garden acts as both a divider of space in the building and a connection device. ! Openings in the walls are controlled to direct views of the vegetation: the room can be opened to reveal the garden; then, views of the forest are hidden again. ! This gives visitors the feeling of arriving in nature and moving away from the urban landscape and acts as a retreat from their hectic lifestyles and tight work schedules. • 13. Introduction to Construction Industry Final Project Report! ! B. Design Proposal (SITE 2) ! Our proposal for site 2 is similar to site 1 to remained its continuity between the two places. We would like to construct a semi- enclosed glass and wooden room (As shown in the figure at side) upon the deck and add more furnitures within the deck area to maximize the utilisation of the space. The semi-wooden and glass room will prevent the deck from being too sunny so that the public can go there and rest often even during the hot noon but still not completely enclosed to makes sure that the deck has the sufficient lighting and airiness as well as the perforation of trees. At night the room is lighted,so that the public can also utilise the room. ! ! Proposed Design Layout: ! Page ! of !13 14 Water cooler machine Tables and BEnches Hammock CUSHION SEATINGS AREA
  • 14. Introduction to Construction Industry Final Project Report! Benefits of furniture fittings: ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! Page ! of !14 14 The hammock can be tied to the trees beside the wooden platform. By doing so, tired students can get rested and be ready for the next class. Also, an environment with trees and stones, it feels just like nature and students get to experience nature in the campus. By adding a wooden bench, it maximizes the use of space. More people can be fitted into the selected area and it also provides more seats for people. By doing so, more people can enjoy the nice scenery as well as having a place to hang out with friends. Students can do reading there or just sit there and rest. To put a water cooler at the resting area so that students can refill their water bottles and drink water without having to walk so far to the nearest water cooler. By doing so, students will not be as lazy to get drinking water and they will stay hydrated. This reduces the risk of getting sick. !
