The first baining course for social

The first professional institution
that provided baining for a carrer
in social work was established in
1936 in Bombay. The genesis of
social work education in India has
its root in the establishment of Sir
Dorabji Tata graduate School of
social work (later known as Tata
Institution of social science)
It admitted mainly graduate and
awarded diploma in social
service administration after two
year course of beginning. Till
1942 institute admitted students
every alternate year. Because of
the small size of the faculty. This
practice continued from 1936 to
1942.
For almost another decade there was no other
programme of social work education in the
country.
In 1947, both Gujrat And Vidhyapeeth
Ahmedabad and Kaashi Vidhyapeeth Vanaras
established such programme.
In 1948, Delhi School of Social Work came under
auspices of north India with assistance from
foreign division of America YMCA. It is the
pioneer institution offering two year post
graduate course leading to master degree.
In 1949, University of Delhi granted affiliation and
took up m,anagement of school in 1961.
The first school as part if the university was
established in Baroda in 1949-50.
Department of social work, Lucknow University
was established in 1949.
Subsequently madras school of social work (1952)
and others were established across the length and
breath of the country.
In 1959, Association of school of social
work in India. It is national forum on all
method of social work education. It has
played a prominent role in organising
seminars for staff development constant
review of syllabi. And course content,
research pertaining to social work
education, preparing teaching metarial
etc. It has always attempt to establish
teaching standard but has not been
much successful in enforcing due to its
being an association of voluntary nature.
Thus by the end of second decade after the
first institution was established in 1936,
only 7 institution was established .
The university Grant Commission appointed
the first review committee in 1975 for the
promotion, maintenance of standard
education, coordition of social work
education, beginning research and practice.
The sixties experienced the highest state
of growth by 1975, when the second
review committee for the social work
education established by the University
Grant Commission undertook a survey
there were 34 institution for social work
education. The handbook on Social Work
Education facillities in India also also
reported 34 institution in 1976. The third
Review committee for social work
education in 2001.
