X was a large cannon used during the English Civil
War (1642 - 1649) during the Siege of Colchester. The
town of Colchester was a walled city with a castle
and several churches. Standing right next to the city
wall, was St Mary's Church. Placed on the wall of St.
Mary's Church was a huge cannon named X. X's
tragic fall resulted from a shot from a Parliamentary
cannon which damaged the wall beneath the
cannon. The Royalists, or Cavaliers, tried to raise X up
again, and place it on another part of the wall.
However, because the cannon was so heavy they
were unable to raise it. As a result, the town of
Colchester fell to the Parliamentarians. Name X.
