2. E-MAIL
Electronic mail or e-mail is a method of exchanging
digital messages (data, text files, digital photos, audio and
video files) from an author to one or more recipients.
This service is provided by different email service
providers like HOTMAIL, GMAIL, AOL, YAHOO etc.
4. Advantages of E-Mail
1. Cheapest way of communication
2. Fast message transfer
3. Easy to use and operate
4. Multimedia messages can be
transmitted (text files, image, audio,
video files etc)
5. Multiple messages can be sent at a time
6. There is less or no chance of messages
getting misplaced or lost
7. Once user is online, there is no further
cost for message delivery.
5. Disadvantages of E-Mail
1. There must be electricity and telephone system to
use E-Mail.
2. Both receiver and sender must have a computer
and internet access to transfer E-Mail.
3. Confidential information can be easily forwarded
and distributed and if done in error, could easily
end up in the wrong hands.
4. Viruses can be transmitted along with the
message.
5. Long messages can make the reader to lose
interest on it, making the messages useless.
6. Unnecessary messages (SPAM) may trouble the
Email users lot of times.
7. Emails cannot really be used for official business
documents where signatures are need to be done
6. How E-Mail works??
Email system are based on a STORE AND FORWARD
model.
First the sender types the message and sends it to the
mail server or email service providers, the mail server
forwards it to the next server through internet and
satellite. Then the message is finally received by a
receiver.
7. Email Address
An email address identifies an email box to which email
messages are delivered.
It gives unique identity to each user.
It is divided into 2 parts separated by ‘at the rate’ @
a) Username b) Domain Name
For eg:
shrestha . prabesh @ gmail . com
USER NAME DOMAIN NAME
8. USERNAME AND DOMAIN NAME
USERNAME
It is the unique name given
to the e-mail address given
before ‘@’.
It can be changed by the
user.

It is the identification of the
E-mail service providers
given after ‘@’
It cannot be changed by the
user.
For eg:
hotmail.com
gmail.com
9. Mail Server
It is the computer that serves as an electronic post office
for e-mail.
It is also known as Mail Transfer Agent (MTA).
A mail server usually consists of a storage area where e-
mail is stored for local users
10. Web Page
A Webpage is a web document that is suitable for
the World Wide Web and the web browser.
It is the electronic page in internet containing information
on specific topics.
A Website is the collection of related web pages.
It is a related collection of World Wide Web (WWW) files
that includes a beginning file called a home page.

Web browser is a software which helps to navigate
WWW.
It helps th user to surf the net.
Some examples are: Google Chrome, Internet Explorer,
Mozilla Firefox, Thunderbird, Opera, Safari etc.
12. Internet Service Provider (ISP)
ISP means the company which provides user access to
internet.
It charges some amount monthly or yearly for the service.
Some popular ISP in Nepal are:
Nepal Telecom, Ncell, UTL, WorldLink, Broadlink, Subisu,
Classic Tech, Vianet, Merchantile, etc.
13. G-Mail
It is a free, search based webmail service provided by
Google.
It is the combination of email with Google’s search
technology.
It also provides users with a gigabyte of storage for
messages and provides the ability to search for specific
messages
14. Host
A host is a computer or other device connected to
a computer network.
It is a computer system that is accessed by a user working
at a remote location.
