City Overview
• Thimphu became a town and capital city in 1961
• Area = 26sq.km,
• Current population= 104,000, growth rate=10-12%
• 12 local area plans & 15 unplanned areas
4. Urban Transportation Policy
• Protect environment and promote the use of
energy efficient and less polluting vehicles
• Provide choice of passenger and freight transport
• a) Explore, plan and develop alternative modes of
passenger and freight transport such as railways
and ropeways;
• b) Explore and implement water transport
5. History of transportation in Thimphu
• The number of vehicles in the country stood at 67,926 in 2013
and 67,449 in 2012
• 53.2% of total vehicle are registered under Thimphu region
(crowed city)
• The average annual growth rate of 11 % was recorded from
2001 to 2011, but with the import of vehicles prohibited since
March 2012, it saw growth rate decreased to 7.6% in 2012
and 0.71% in 2013. The highest recorded growth rate was
reported in 2011 at 17.5%.
