4. Building should be planned in such a way that it uses maximum
daylight and not artificial lighting.
Daylight may come from above or from the side-skylights will be provided, more walls pierced by windows
Lighting from above
Advantage-A free supply of light, less liable to be
affected by the different aspects of various
rooms in the building and by lateral obstacles
Disadvantage-excess of radiating light
Lateral lighting
Provided by ordinary windows
of various shapes and sizes
placed at suitable intervals or
by continuous opening.
Windows at usual level are
sometimes useless because the
opposite walls seems to be useless
because of light.
Lateral opening on the sides above
allows pleasant views resisting the
visitor’s eye and refreshing his
mind
It is advisable to have a door between the
two windows since it is a dark corner which
breaks the attention of the viewer
It is advisable to not have an opening directly opposite the entrance since it would break the interest of painting
due to lateral lighting
High placed windows-leaves all four walls free of exhibits.
Instead of lighting the whole room-frosted
glass, artificial lighting
Basic Lighting Principles of museum:
A – LIGHT ARTIFACTS, NOT AREAS
B – BACKGROUNDS MUST BE SUBDUED
C – CONTROL GLARE and CASE REFLECTIONS

While the sun presents a huge challenge for designers working in the Middle East, it can also provide
great benefits, including plenty of natural light . “Throughout, the treatment of light and shade draws
on a tradition of discreet, carefully positioned openings, which capture and direct the region’s intense
sunlight to illuminate and animate these interior spaces,”
