1. EVALUATION
QUESTION 1
In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and
conventions of real media products?
2. Dispersion
■ My media product works closely
with the conventions of many
other products in the same
genre.It does this in many ways;
camera, editing, sounds and
lighting,however varies on
meeting conventions on mise en
scene.
3. Structure
■ The first way which my product would follow the
convention would be through its structure in terms of
editing. There is a clear beginning and middle and as
the product is a trailer the ending is not made clear,
this is order to leave the audience in suspense. The
structure of my product also follows conventions in
editing as the trailer is made up of many different
aspects. The first being the transitions used. The
transitions used were carefully thought about and
heavily inspired by those in similar media products to
mine. The product also uses superimposed images
which contain text and titles which are informative to
the audience and follow the theme .In my product I
also tried to develop on the conventions and use more
complex techniques than those seen in products like
mine in the industry. An example of this would be that
at the end of my product there is a screen which
divides over and over into split screens of many
peoples faces.
4. Filming
■ Aside from structure my product also follows conventions by the process
which my product was filmed .My product was filmed in a way which is
similar to many independent film trailers are.It did not use any new
innovative ways of filming but instead consisted of a filming crew of four
people ,using a combination of handheld camera and a camera based on
dolly or crab dolly. The camera used would not fit into the conventions of
a major film company ,but the lower budget we filmed on worked well
with independent conventions.
Crab dolly
5. Sound and Lighting
Sound
■ The sound in my trailer also followed
many of the conventions also such as
when filming the sound I used most
commonly was sync dialog and.When
editing different FX sounds were used
and, segued. In a shot in the middle of
my product I used perspective
asynchronous sounds in conjunction
with each other ,such as a breathing at
the forefront and sirens in the
background to show how far away
help was.
Lighting
■ The lighting followed conventions as
well .The product used a variety of
lighting styles.My trailer used
graduated tonality and high-contrast
picture for the most part but also used
high- key picture in day time scenes in
which mainly natural light was used.
My product also used a combination of
hard light and soft light.
6. Character choice
■ However my media project goes
against the typical convention and the
cast of our product is mainly
female. This is very rare and by doing
this my project challenges but at the
same time develops the conventions.
This occurred by chance but worked
well because I wanted to break down
the negative stereotypes used in
relation to women.The main character
is a female who will go on to be the
key to curing the pandemic, and in
almost all other media like ours the
male is always the main character who
is strong and inspiring.
