Terminal Value And Instrumental Value Research Paper
Values are different for each person. While one person might value reputation, another might value inner harmony. In Chapter 5, values are
defined as a collection of guiding principles that an individual consider to be morally right and desirable in life. Furthermore, values are rank in
terms of how important the particular value is to an individual and how intense their feels are about that particular value. To illustrate, a person
can value wealth and flexibility, but not at the same level. A person might lower their value toward flexibility a little in order to increase their
potential for wealth. In addition, according to Milton Rokeach, we also organize values into two categories called terminal values and
instrumental values. Terminal ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
My current goals of becoming a successful artist has been the issue of conflict in terms of finding balance for academic success and artist
freedom. Since the age of eight or nine, I have always had a dream of becoming an artist and having my art work displayed in museums across
the country. This goal started when my fourth grade teacher entered one of my watercolor painting into an art show for the Mobile County public
schools art contest. Much to my surprise, I won second place for the entire fourth grade classes and the school body. This gave me the
motivation to continue to develop my skills and interests in the arts. However, as I was starting college, the reality of finding time and balance to
study for my coursework in radiology and devoting time for artistic leisure had become difficult to obtain. In fact, the intensity of my
coursework for the radiology program denied me the chance to focus my time and attention on my artwork. Therefore, in terms of ranking my
personal values, my goals for academic success surpassed my endeavors as an artist. Having focus on my value for success in my academics has
led me to maintain my desired grade point average (gpa) and also has gave opportunities to a few honor societies, and achieve the qualifications
in terms of gpa to apply for a variety of programs at different colleges and universities. Although I was pleased in meeting my terminal goal in
my academics, I also felt dissatisfied that I often neglected one goal (art) for

College Is An Overwhelming Experience For Some People, And...
College can be an overwhelming experience for some people, and for others not so much. If a student is armed with a powerful work ethic, and a
will to succeed, college may seemingly be quiet straightforward. On the other hand, for the student who is not as fortunate to be equipped with
those skills, the journey through college may not be as successful. This is one reason why the collegiate student athlete may tend to carry a
higher grade point average than that of a non athlete. From a young age most athletes have been trained and disciplined to become the best they
can be at their sport. Along with that training, most of them have developed a desire to outwork the competition, and be successful in everything
that they do. This happens to fit right in with what it takes to be successful in academics as well. Not only are they equipped with a desire to
succeed, they are also held accountable by the athletic department, coaches, and athletic association to maintain their good grades to keep
eligibility. This is why there may be a chance that the collegiate student athlete may do better, on average, in the class room, than that of the
non–student athlete. Becoming a student athlete at the college level means that the athlete has put many hours of hard work and dedication into
their sport. They have been pushed to their limits by trainers and coaches to become the best they can be. However, being a student athlete not
only requires a high level of skill on the field, or in

Introduction: The present research would seek to expand upon the current research base of mentor programs. Having an adult mentor is one of
the greatest predictors of whether as student with finish high school, but more is information is needed. Indeed, mentoring programs are already
associated with improved outcomes such as higher graduation rates, better grades, better jobs, and less drug abuse, but what makes for a
successful program? Obviously, the goal behind these programs is to benefit children, but making sure your program is getting the most from its
funding is imperative when budgets are as tight as they are in educational community.

My Personal Goals
Dr. Martin Luther King Junior once stated, "I have a dream..." Each and every one of us can discover that we all have our own dream. Our
dream can reflect our career, personal, and academic goals. When our dream can fulfill each one of these goals, we can define it as our purpose.
My purpose can be very confusing, and contorts to certain situations. In the past week, I have thought about my true meaning in this world. I
believe my purpose is to teach others and make a difference through influencing other's lives. My life's goal is to teach the uneducated especially
pointed towards the little ones. I want to educate those from the ages of eight months to eight or nine years. Influencing people's lives can make
the difference from a bleak world full of hatred and dismay to a world full of love and charity towards one another. I hope I can influence just
enough of the right people to learn to accept others how they are presented to us. Personal goals of mine include teaching children, making a
difference by influencing, and starting a family of my own. My academic goals for college include graduating with a Bachelor's Degree in Early
Childhood Education. Also, I want to maintain a grade point average of three–point–seven or higher. The career in education can be quite
vigorous and I owe it to my future students to attain the best, most competent education I can receive to be able to teach them well. My career
goal is to teach in a Kindergarten classroom working with special needs

Student Veterans And Traditional Students
As the number of student veterans continues to increase within the university system, it is imperative to examine both the similarities and the
differences between student veterans and traditional students (students without military experience), and what effect those differences may have
on student veterans' ability to succeed. We surveyed thirty undergraduates at the University of Alaska Anchorage, assessing their grade point
average, age, hours spent studying, and various other factors which we deemed our "criteria for success". In doing so, we believed that we would
find a radical difference between the grade point average of student veterans compared to their traditional counterparts. The data collected
suggests that our hypothesis was correct: student veterans were a letter grade behind their peers. This gap in achievement between the two
groups suggests that student veterans' ability to adjust to life within the university system requires further examination. As more veterans
continue to seek higher education, it is essential that those within the university system strive to understand, and alleviate some of the difficulties
burdening this emerging demographic.

Empiricism In Grendel
In Grendel by John Gardner, twelve philosophies are connected to each one of the twelve chapters in the novel. These philosophies are all 'coats'
that the main character, Grendel, "tries on" to see if he truly aligns and believes in the philosophy. Similarly, I, throughout my fifteen years of
living, have "tried on" coats of philosophies and align specifically with parts of two philosophies present in Grendel: Empiricism and the
philosophy of Nietzsche. Empiricism is the philosophy that professes all knowledge comes from sense experience, and the primary aspect of
Nietzsche's philosophy is that tragedy is the affirmation of life. Ultimately, because of the experiences I have had in my life, I have developed
into an Empiricist and believer ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
After opening the document, I scrolled quickly to the bottom of the document. I saw the rubric.
I froze. Time froze.
I closed my eyes in disbelief. I refreshed the page. I thought Ms. Platt had attached another student's rubric to my essay. I wanted the nightmare
to end. Not only did I not receive an "A" or a "B," but a "C–." I earned a seventy percent. My eyes watered, and I began to feel nauseous. I felt
as if I failed myself and my family. This grade was not supposed to be possible. In the words of Grendel, it was an accident. But unfortunately, it
was not. At that moment, I had to accept, even if I did not want to, that I, for once, did not reach my high goals or had to surrender my
unrealistic view of myself. I had erred, like all humans do, and learned that I was not perfect and that I could fail to reach my standards. At that
moment, I realized that I wasn't superhuman but human, and this was something challenging for me to cope with at the time. However, in
discovering my ability to fail, my perception of myself had been revolutionized.
After that moment, I no longer saw myself as an intelligent kid who was unable to fail, but one who was and could be challenged by failure and
challenged to learn from my mistakes. After revising the essay, I received an "A+," yet this was not what made me happy. The fact that I, the
twelve–year–old boy who had previously rejected failure as a possibility, could accept failure (by my standards) and use it as

Athleticism Research Paper
Athleticism: Are Grades Important To play or not to play that is the question. In school you have the choice to take part in a sport. To be able to
participate is a different issue. To be able to participate in a sport you should also be able to maintain a suitable grade point average. So I believe
that students should not be able to take part in sports if their grade point average does not meet the requirements. Believe it or not grades are
crucial in school. For example, you could engage in a sport and not get the grades, although that could cheat you out of a scholarship. Not only
do coaches look at how well you perform, yet they also look at your grades. Most coaches want a player that is well rounded and can be talented

Students vs. The System Essay
Students vs. the System
Education has always been a great factor in determining human survival and success. Whether it is learning to live in a harsh environment or
learning to manage a company, education is and always will be incredibly significant. Education is so important in modern society that a system
of grades has been developed to evaluate students of all ages and levels. In Paul Goodman's essay "A Proposal to Abolish Grading" he argues
that the grading system that is commonly used in our society is ineffective and should be done away with. This idea is wrong since there are
many positive outcomes that result from the current grading system.
Goodman opens up his piece by making his claim that grades have take precedence over ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
"But if the aim is to discover weakness, what is the point of down–grading and punishing it, and thereby inviting the student to conceal his
weakness, by faking and bulling, if not cheating?" (Goodman 208). Why is testing for weakness a bad thing? If a test is returned to a student and
it is heavy with errors, it is the student's responsibility to correct the mistakes for the next test. Once a student has realized this, in Goodman's
eyes, they have become self–aware. "If the student dares to accept himself as he is, a teacher's grade is a crude instrument compared with a
student's self–awareness" (Goodman 208). Throughout the essay, there is a feeling that the author relays that all students are looking to only get
by in school, but in real life, that is certainly not the case. As a matter of fact, very many students in high schools are very determined to achieve
their goals, so they work hard and learn to attain them, rather than taking an easy route to a good grade. Getting high letter grades is a powerful
motivation for students who know what they want. For those with competitive spirits, high grades can be used to measure one's own ranking to
the rest of the class. For other students, it could be a reward saying "excellent work" as opposed "you passed." As stated earlier, there are many
students who are actually hard workers. However, there may not really be a flaw in the system of grades that schools have implemented. It

The No Child Left Behind ( Nclb ) Act Launching America 's...
In 2001, President George W. Bush signed the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act launching America's education system into an era of
standardized testing as a method of holding states and schools accountable for student achievement. With this recent surge of high–stakes
standardized testing, teachers are held to increasingly higher expectations of quality instruction and meeting these standards. However, schools
are unprepared in achieving the goals of NCLB resulting in years of struggle to improve student success in testing due to flaws in the traditional
grading system. Current schools and teachers lack proper grading practices that are inadequate of accurately representing student achievement.
With the increased focus on standards, it is imperative that schools begin to implement an effective grading system so that all students and
parents are provided accurate feedback of students' abilities.
There are myriad unforeseen consequences when schools use the traditional grading system. For the past century, traditional grading practices
and policies that have contributed to much of the failure of student achievement. The use of the traditional grading system has slowly led to the
major issue of grade inflation. Most often students' grade tend to be inflated with the help of non–academic factors such as homework,
participation and student effort. High school teachers tend include effort as part of the grade, giving high grades to students who work in class
despite whether they

(Cheawjindakarn, Suwannatthachote, & Theeraroungchaisri, 2012, p.61). This can be accomplished by hiring online tutors. A case study found
that in order for online–course resources to be used effectively, the CFSs that need to be considered are: human factors pertaining to the
instructors; the instructors' and students' technical competency; the instructors' and students' mindset (about learning); the level of collaboration
intrinsic in the course; and the level of perceived IT infrastructure and technical support (Soong, Chan, Chua, & Loh, 2000, p.102). These same
CFSs align with WSE success factors. The human factors pertaining to the instructors can be found under financial CSF. The instructors and

Strengths And Weaknesses Of Writing
Chapter ten is all about, as a teacher, being able to assess the writing skill of students and knowing different ways to keep the students interested.
Along with talking about the underlying issues when it comes to the different ways writing is taught and evaluating the skills of writing students.
For me, growing up I can't tell you how much I disliked having to write papers in high school because we would talk a little about what the
teacher wanted and then we were set to do it on our own, then given a grade and that was it. I always wanted more feedback than what I got so
with the next writing assignment I could do better than the previous. After reading this chapter three main content areas that stuck out to me
were; what do grades mean, objectivity in assessment, and how to make assessments reliable.
What do grades mean? It seems that many people have a different idea of what a letter grade or percent means, to some it is just one thing that
doesn't define them to others it is everything they work for. For any teacher it is important they have a set standard for what they will be graded
on with each assignment. Grades are particularly important once they get into higher education. One fact listed in the book is, "a high school
student who receives A's on their paper, will finish their first year of college with a C is freshman comp." One of the biggest misconception
about what teachers as looking for with writing they are looking for the writing ability of the students.

Electronic Device : An Object That Is Controlled By A...
I. Introduction
How many people do you know that do not have some sort of electronic device? The definition of electronic device is "an object that is
controlled by a computerized system" ("Merriam–Webster.com", 2015). In the society that we live in today electronics are becoming a necessity
in school and sometimes in the work environment. This raises the question of why are we becoming dependent upon electronics, when they may
end up hurting us academically. Students who spend more time on electronic devices may spend less on homework or other assignments that
require more attention and thought out responses. Schools are starting to make a lot of assignments due through email and or a school sponsored
website (ex. blackboard). There are ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There are also, "reflowable e–textbooks which use a flexible format system that includes dynamic media and allows the user to modify both the
layout and interactive features of the e–textbook to suit the display medium" (Chesser, 2011). With this being said, it is important to have valid
information on this particular topic because if it is not affecting students in a positive way then it should not be continued.
1. Background/Review of the Literature:
This is a very popular study that has been done over the last few years because of the rise in electronic use in the education system. One study
was done by a group of people sponsored by Liberty University (Rockinson–Szapkiw, Courduff, Carter, & Bennett (2013)). These group of
students took a sample size of 538 university students and examined the relationships between textbook format, grades, and perceived learning
scores. The results found were that students who used e–textbooks had higher levels of affective and psychomotor learning, but there were no
notable differences in cognitive learning nor did final grades suggests that e–textbooks may have an effect in their learning.
Another study looked at the relationship between academic performance and the use of computer technology. This was conducted by three
students at Washburn University (Drain, Grier, and Sun (2012)). The three researchers concluded that an increase in computer usage was
correlated with improvements in academic performance overall. Based on

The Controversy Of Evaluating Letter Grades
There has been a lot of debate about the way schools should be evaluating their students. Some say that letter grades measure different levels of
performance in school subjects and that letter grades also motivate most students to do well. Others argue that the letter grade system is affecting
the students' learning progress and their engagement; therefore, affecting those students in a negative way. There are more appropriate ways to
evaluate young students than to grade them. Trials have been done in many schools throughout Canada where students are being assessed
through summaries. These summaries vary from letter grades since they provide information on the specific areas of struggle the student may be
facing and the opportunity for discussion ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Students today spend the majority of their weekdays at schools which can result in stress due to many factors. It is important for students to learn
to cope with pressure because it is an important skill for overall health. Grades can cause stress and anxiety in many ways. For example, a
student that is receiving "bad" grades can have stress because they feel pressured by the teachers or parents to get better grades, and the student
may feel that their peers are judging them because of their grades. On the other hand, a student who is receiving "good" grades may feel stress
due to the pressure of maintaining their grades for the sake of their peer's judgement and parent's expectations. Sources of stress in schools
include: Teacher Interactions, Academic Stress, Peer Interactions, and Academic Self–Concept (Helms and Gable 6). The manifestation of stress
results in emotional, behavioral, or psychological distress (Helms and Gable 6). Grades are a factor in all of the sources mentioned, the student
may feel the teacher disapproves of them, their peers don't respect them, and their self–esteem will be impacted because of poor grades. This can
result in behaviour and emotional issues which further the student's insecurities and can cause psychological problems in the long term. Letter or
percentage grades say nothing about these issues, it is very difficult to spot stress in children and the resulting behaviour due to stress can be
misinterpreted if the parents and teachers are not made aware. Summary assessments can help detect stress in students, where the student can
explain how they are feeling and the teachers and parents can detect high levels of stress. Test anxiety is another manifestation of stress in
students today; unfortunately, many schools and teachers face a huge responsibility in which the students must perform well in order for teachers
to keep their jobs and for schools to

Causes And Effects Of Stress On Teenagers
HEY! Are you a teenager, or interested in the subject of stress for teenagers??? Then this is the paper for you! In this paper I, a teenager, talk
about the causes and effects of stress for teenagers! Or, at least the causes of stress in my life that others agree with! Though the effects will be
generalized. Adults often forget about the stress they felt as teenagers, or don't understand their stress as times have been changing. For that
reason there is often MORE stress in a teen's life. This paper is for everyone, especially those adults, to learn about the stress put on the younger
generation(s). OUR FIRST TOPIC ISSSSSSS: Big presentations. Most adults don't understand why we feel so pressured when we have to do
presentations, well that's why this paper is being created. In this day and age, adults don't get the stress that us teenagers go through nowadays,
because the times change and what was stressful then, may not even be stressful now. For some people it's because their voices are changing,
others don't like the feeling of everyone's eyes on them. "They're probably watching every move I make and silently judging me" is what I think
a lot of teenagers think or feel during a presentation. I hate being in the spotlight, so I hate having everyone's eyes on me. I'd be invisible if I
could be. During this time in our lives, our anxiety is at its current fullest, so of course we'd be nervous showing off something we did, to people
who can judge us so easily. Once a

Grading Is A Standardized System
GRADE CALCULATOR
Grading is a standardized system in an area, region, town or country that is used to rank school going children depending on their efforts and
results at school. The grading system can be expressed in four primary ways. It can either be in terms of letters whereby different letters
represent one's performance and these letters are assigned numeric values. For example, the best letter grade is an A with a numeric value of 4
while the worst grade is F with a numeric value of 0. It can also be represented in terms of a percentage of all the rightly answered questions in a
test; for example a score of 60% in mathematics. It can also be expressed as a value out of the total; for example scoring 7/10 in an English
continuous assessment test or it can be expressed as a range; for example 1 to 6. All the above are ways for ranking students but at the end of the
day, every school has its own preference.
The fact that schools use different grading systems, it also poses some difficulties in the education systems because of the fact that grades keep
inflating. This means that the works that would have received lower grades in the past are now being awarded with higher grades. Grades
inflation causes problems like:
It makes it nearly impossible to compare students who did their exams at different time intervals. This is primarily because as at the moment,
higher grades are being awarded for the same work.
The grades are not uniform among the various disciplines that

The Importance of Homework Essay
Students spend hours doing it, teachers spend hours checking it. Homework is sometimes a burden to teachers and students but still it is
necessary. Some people doubt homework's effectiveness, but teachers and researchers agree homework is essential. Homework helps students
get better grades in school.
Some people don't know exactly what homework is. Homework is defined as an out of class activity assigned to students as an extension or
elaboration of classroom work(KidSource). There are three types of homework teachers generally give out. The first is Practice assignments,
they are assignments that reinforce newly acquired skills or knowledge(KidSource). An example of these assignments is writing definitions

Parents, students, and teachers all sometimes wonder how useful is homework? Though studies examining the relationship between homework
and school achievement have been inclusive(ERIC). Still many teachers and researchers still agree that homework helps students achieve higher
grades in school. Schools that assigned homework frequently showed higher student achievement than schools that assigned little
homework(ERIC). This means that homework is working. Studies have generally found that if teachers carefully plan homework, homework can
be quite helpful(KidSource). Homework has proven its effectiveness and is a very powerful factor in student performance.
Students should only spend enough time on homework so that the subject is reinforced and not just a waste of time. The national PTA suggest
that from K–3 grades there should be no more than 20 minutes a day, for 4–6 grades there should be 20–40 minutes of homework, and from 7–
12 grades time varies do to types of subjects and number of subjects taken(KidSource). Anymore than these recommended amount of times is
seen excessive by the national PTA. Surprisingly U.S. students are working as hard as Asians: 24% of eighth graders do more then two hour of
homework compared to Japans 28% and Germanys 17%(Brimelow108). Are we working to hard, researchers don't think so, U.S. student grades

the ninth grade who do not regularly text, and the other twenty would be twelfth graders who have texted daily for the last three years. In order
to establish a well–rounded answer, I will make sure students are selected from different classrooms and different teachers. I will also make sure
the thirty teens selected have varying grade point averages to keep the group diverse. To assure I have a rapport with the students, I will ask to sit

How The School Is Through A Letter Grading System
Childhood is filled with many things. It is a time of uncharted growth and learning. Experiences that form who we are going to become. It is
when we discover our likes and dislikes free of major consequence. Children learn rapidly and willingly. They learn to walk and talk on their
own, and sometimes they learn more than one language. They are curious and constantly wanting to learn in the early years. People understand
this and want to give them more as well as prepare them the world they will face as adults. Then why do we burden them with grades? Soon they
are off to school. School comes along with lots of new experiences, some good, others bad. Among those things there are a few that are arguably
unneeded. Grades are slowly making their way to the top of the list. The way we currently measure success in school is through a letter grading
system. A is great, B not so much, C and D unacceptable, and F? Forget about it! (Ellis) This is the way we have been grading middle and
elementary schools since the late nineteenth century after it had been tested throughout colleges and high schools beginning in the year 1756. A
standardized grading option was needed to keep the growing number of schools on track with each other. (Lassahn) Just because this is the only
way we have found to measure the growth of children for the past two hundred or so years. That by no means proves it is the best way. The
stress and burden it puts on the children outweighs the purpose of grading.

Essay on Ability Grouping
Ability grouping is a widely spread practice used among many educators today. Between–class grouping is by far one of the most commonly
used types of ability grouping. "The goal of this grouping is for each class to be made up of students who are homogeneous in standardized
intelligence or achievement test scores" (Snowman, Biehler). In this type of grouping, the schools separate their students into different classes or
courses. "Between–class ability grouping is where students spend most of the day in ability groups and use the same or similar curriculum
substantially adjusted to their ability levels" (Ability Grouping 3). "For example, in elementary schools, students from the same grade levels may
be grouped by ability for reading and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This impacts their achievement level and in turn affects their self–esteem. Such consequences cause the students to lose interest in school, and in
the long run, many of these students begin to drop out. Although there are certain benefits to between–class ability grouping, they are
outweighed by the negative effects this type of grouping can produce. Ultimately, the focus should not be on how to label students, but rather, on
the quality of the education the students can receive while working with peers in specific subject areas.
Regrouping is another type of ability grouping. Students of the same age, ability and grade, but from different classrooms, are brought together
for a specific subject such as reading or math. According to their goals, activities, and individual needs, the students are grouped and then
regrouped again. There are two common regrouping strategies: teacher–led groups and student–led groups.
Teacher–led groups are effective in introducing material, summing up the conclusion made by the groups, and meeting the common needs of the
groups. These groups typically include whole class, small group, and individual instruction. Whole class instruction allows the teacher to
introduce new material to the entire class. It also allows students to use their prior knowledge to form new acquisitions. "Small groups can
provide opportunities for working with students who have common needs, such as reinforcement or enrichment" (Valentino, 2000, 1).

Flawed System Vs. Traditional Grading System
Standards–based grading seems to be extremely popular in education with more and more schools beginning to use it because it is able to allow
students to" look forward with their grades create a more accurate display of progress. This is so wrong for a multitude of reasons. Switching to
this flawed system would create far more problems than it would solve because SBG is inferior to traditional grades, SBG is much more
disorganized than the current "traditional" grading system, and SBG is unnoticed by colleges.
The first fatal flaw of SBG is that it is inferior to traditional grades in certain areas. As the name suggests, standards–based grading (SBG) is a
grading system based off of standards rather than points, and uses a 1–4 grading system ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
SBG is unfair and subjective (Cons). The unfairness of SBG has already been discussed. The reason for this is that SBG is heavily dependent on
a teacher's skill and judgement ability. A teacher using SBG has to be a total Wushu Master of grading because they need to know the standards
inside–out. This also would heavily complicate and lengthen the grading process. In contrast, traditional grading has a clear template laid out to
grade with. In traditional grading, the only subjectivity is the point assignment (which is much less dependent on what the teachers think). All
you have to do is turn points into percentages, and turn those percentages into grades. Voila, end of story, good

Academic Decorum Explained : Academic Decorum In The...
Academic Decorum
Academic Decorum Explained: When students walk into a classroom there is a certain expectation they must uphold. Typically students will
walk in the classroom, sit in their assigned seats, find out what is required of them that day, and do the work expected of them. In the simplest
terms, this is academic decorum. Academic decorum is about how the student and the teacher fulfills their respective roles. According to
academic decorum, the role of the student is to be willing to learn and willing to follow the rules the teacher puts in place. Under academic
decorum a good student will do what they see fit to be the best possible learner they could be. The teacher's role according to academic decorum
is to ensure that their students are learning and progressing at an efficient rate. The teacher has the right to have students adhere to whatever
rules they see fit, but when putting academic decorum into the equation, the teacher must change some rules and procedures according to the
needs of the class within reason. In short, academic decorum is put in place so students can be better and teachers can teach them in a way that
fits their (the student's) needs.

were found to have poor grades, versus 23 percent of light users" (Tony Schwartz 2). This is saying that technology doesn't affect others

Spending too much time looking at phones with your head down at a minimal of 20 degrees, which is unhealthy for the spinal cord it can causes

It

skills. I am a member of the general council. I also volunteered in assisting the drama department in last year's musical. Through this job I
painted sets and helped make props for the actors to use. I enjoyed helping this department presenting this play because I see first hand how even
the smallest tasks can elevate a simple school play to a dramatic masterpiece. My contribution brought me great joy. Alongside with assisting the
musical, I have volunteered, to helping my school tech crew. I was also involved in a kindergarten graduation. Although I do not consider myself
"Techy", I felt it was important to get involved in my school, so I made myself available and surprised myself into what a contributed. It was a
great success. In addition, I have volunteered I my school's after school program and helping with events that are held, for example, Grade 9 day.
This was the first day of high school for those coming from junior school. We meet the new freshmen and make myself available to them if they

think it is important, but because it is something I enjoy doing and look forward to. I love bringing joy to others and

Essay On Should Students Get Paid For Grades
According to the NEA (National Education Administration), one of four Americans says students should be paid for good grades. (Flannery)
Paying students for good grades is a topic that has been talked about over a span of multiple years. Should students be paid for good test scores,
doing homework, and completing assignments on time? Students should not be paid for the grades they get at school because when rewards are
given the student loses the interest in learning itself and focuses solely on the reward, a student's character growth can be a better motivator than
money, and at a young age children don't understand the use of the money they would earn for the grades they received which can highly
ineffective.
First, when a student starts ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When a student thinks about the rewards he can get from good grades instead of growing as a person can negatively affect them later in life. "
For example, personal growth is one of the main benefits of learning in a classroom with fellow students, which should be payment enough for
children (Breed). As shown by the example, when a student can grow as an individual when completing school work should be a better reward
than money for the student. Furthermore, an example is shown in Matt Breed's article when he states, "Some "jobs" serve not as money making
opportunities, but as character and experience builders." This is a great example because it shows that personal growth is more important than
money for an internship or volunteer work in the real–world just like in school when someone would get money for good grades. To summarize,
when someone is to give money for grades they are missing the most important thing for the student which is personal growth in themselves
which can lead to far better rewards than money will.
Finally, money for grades should not be given because children at a young age don't fully understand the importance of money. " Children do not
fully understand the importance of earning money and often don't really need their own money," (Breed). Children at a young age can receive
money and not know what to do with it or they wouldn't care about it as much as playing a video game rather than

Where All Grades Are Above Average By Stuart Rojstaczer Essay
In the article, "Where All Grades Are Above Average" written by Stuart Rojstaczer, he discusses how college grades are becoming increasingly
higher and gives several possible reasons for the practice known as grade inflation. As a professor at Duke and Stanford Universities, Rojstaczer
details his personal experiences with grade inflation as well as a brief history of the topic. Although, he believes that grade inflation is wrong he
chooses to participate in the practice because he says giving some students the low grades that they deserve reflects poorly on him as a teacher.
In addition, he believes that changing attitudes are leading people to view education as more of a business/consumer relationship and away from
the more traditional view of a student/teacher relationship. Rojstaczer's argument is weak because while he believes that giving students the
grades they actually earn reflects poorly on him, choosing to participate in the unethical practice of grade inflation is a major blow to his
reputation.
To support his claim that grade inflation is really happening, Rojstaczer states that the letter grades students are receiving today has changed
drastically from the grades students earned a few decades ago. For instance, a C that was given 25% of the time in the 1960's constitutes only
10% of all grades given today to college students at Duke University and 4% of the grades given at Pomona College. In addition, A became the
most popular grade given to students in

Persuasive Essay On Standardized Testing
Have you ever felt the pressure of taking a standardized test and being told its going to determine your future? There are many things students do
not like about school. One thing students do not like is testing, especially standardized testing. Educators are questioning whether standardized
test in high school should be eliminated. First, getting ready for standardized test is big in curriculum especially for the subjects of Math and
English. Standardized testing starts being taken by students as early as kindergarten and being told its will determine getting promoted to the
next grade. Preparing for these tests take about four or five months away from the school years getting ready for the state test. From one of my
sources the book "The Test" the author talked with a sixth grader about the standardized test his reply was "It's like a life–and–death situation. It
decides whether you'll get to another grade. If not, people will be disappointed with you." For a kid having a response like he was maybe
stressed from the preparation all the months to the test week. Kids at young ages might get start to pick up their parents or teachers anxiety and
fake stomachaches because of the pressure of testing. Students having to take test make students hate taking test. During these test, your sitting
in a chair for three hours some don't have breaks. That will have students get stressed and not do well on a test they are taking. Stress that's being

My Memories Of Reading
Some of my earliest memories are those of my mother and grandmother reading stories to me before bed. At three and four years old I loved the
stories they would read. Being introduced to Dr. Seuss and Curious George instilled a love for these fictional worlds where strange and silly
things happened. I read constantly during elementary school on into early high school where I began to fall in love with biographies and
historical nonfiction. During this time I also began my complicated journey of learning to write. Writing was not as easy for me to enjoy, but
eventually, I did find some joy in it. There were many things which happened between the age of 4 and 19 that made me the literate person I am
today. The first time I remember learning to read was when my grandmother was reading "Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?" I had
heard this story dozens of times and new every word by heart. I began pretending to read this book by looking at the pictures and remembering
what words went along with them, trying to impress my grandma, making her think I could read. Soon after this, my grandma bought me the
Hooked on Phonics program that came with books and cassette tapes. I remember how amazing it felt being able to read things for myself and
not have to ask others what a word said. This was the beginning of the excitement and enjoyment I had for reading. Once I learned to read, I
would be finishing book after book, reading at home and during any downtime at school. I loved

Pursuing My Degree In High School
"What did you get on it?" A simple question, a question that I have become very used to hearing, usually after getting back an assignment or test.

The Crucible Reflection
On Friday, November 17th, 2017, Jack, a young man from Choosington, Ohio, would have his life turned forever into a downward spiral. It all
starts that Thursday. On Thursday, Jack came home happy and full of optimism. He had just left his favorite class, AP Lang. Jack loved this class
because of its inspirational and sensible instructor, Mr. Aptist. Mr. Aptist had taught Jack much over the course of the last few months. One of
the main things Mr. Aptist taught Jack was to be diligent and innately motivated to complete his work. Jack took this to heart, this is why after
school on this beautiful Thursday Jack raced home to read his assigned book The Crucible. Jack was to complete the second act of the book by
Friday, having completed the first by Tuesday. Although Jack did not necessarily desire to read this book, he trusted the guidance of his
honorable, yet flexible teacher. After completing his reading Jack goes to bed feeling prepared for the day that lies ahead of him, thanking Mr.
Aptist for teaching him to complete his work. The very next day Jack has a great day at school leading up to the final class of the day, AP Lang.
Jack is saddened when he walks into the class and sees the instructor has left in order to go to the Grammys. Although disappointed, Jack is still
excited to prove to his teacher his responsibility through a test over his assigned reading. Jack anxiously awaits the test, but once he finally
receives the test something is off. Was it just the missing

Identity Is Something We Search Essay
Identity
Identity is something we search for, something we want to find out about ourselves. We want to know what we are here for and what's our
purpose. Identity is the way one sees themselves and our identity is all we have that 's why we protect it and always are trying to make ours
better than the others. I believe college is a time where we find our identity, maybe we have an idea on what it is going to be and sometimes it
takes us many years to figure it out. In Daniel Marks experience his identity is going to take awhile for him to find if he doesn 't change his
ways. Daniels "before" was very rough, he was in trouble a lot. He said he felt like a failure to his father's standards. He enjoys partying very
much, this has lead to him being a poor student with a GPA below a 2.0. His study habits are very poor but he is planning on going to college.
His advisor told him he would fail out if he didn 't change his ways. After hearing all about daniel 's story I would categorize him into the
"Diffusion" area. This is because he is just simply doesn 't care, he lacks motivation and is only doing enough to barely get by. I can avoid all of
these things by sticking to the things I've been doing and to adjust and use the strategies we have learned in U100. In Monica 's story you hear
about a lot of the things she was going through in her first semester so it 's pretty relatable. She tells us about how her parents did not attend

A Short Story Of A Story
It was a cold Thursday in Tennessee when Arden returned home from school to see about three suitcases fully packed and sitting by the door.
She would soon realize that these three suitcases were the start of her life completely changing.
"Mom? Dad?" she said as she looked in the rooms downstairs.
"We're upstairs Arden!" they shouted back. She ran upstairs to find them.
"Why are there suitcases packed downstairs?" "Where are we going?" Arden said. She was curious to know. She was hoping her parents finally
gave in and they were going to tell her they were going on a trip to France, but that was a long shot.
"We thought we told you... about your father's new job... in Sweden."
"Sweden!?!?!" Arden was so shocked she just stood there. She thought of the time they visited Sweden about a year ago. She loved it there, but
she did not want to live there! Arden loved America, despite its flaws, and although Sweden was gorgeous, she didn't want to leave and start all
over. She was happy with where she was right now in her life. Her head felt like it was spinning.
"Um...Okay" she told her parents, trying not to seem too overwhelmed, and she walked to her room to pack up the rest of her things.
How did she not hear about this? She was starting to panic, so she sat down on her bed and tried to collect herself. Maybe it wouldn't be as bad
as she thought it would be. She planned to just take a nap to take her mind off of it, and that's when her mom came in and told her that they were
leaving tomorrow morning.
She woke up the next day and got ready. Arden was definitely the kind of girl that traveled in style, because she didn't want a new country to see
her in what she wears daily. She curled her long dark brunette hair and wore her favorite outfit; her dark red lace ¾ length sleeved shirt, her
favorite grey scarf, her ankle boots and her nicest pair of skinny jeans. She felt ready for the trip, and hopefully the feeling would stretch for
more than one day. Arden is a pretty girl; she is so pretty she could wear a poncho and still look amazing, but that wasn't Arden's goal in life, it
was to be known for more than how she looks. She wanted people to see her in the way she is drawn to others, with intelligence and confidence.

Reflection About English
The year is 2005. The room is calm and silent, but my heart is a symphony. I am glued to a chair and not by choice. A black and white puddle
surrounds me. The symphony gets louder as the minutes go by. The smell of ink fills the air as I am submerged in papers. I begin to drown in a
sea of words I cannot comprehend. It would be years before I would learn to swim.
Prior to entering third grade, I was a victim of bullying. Although these bullies were different from the norm. They did not kick me or call me
names. They did not leave any physical scars, except for a paper cut or two. Reading and writing were my bullies and they made my life a living
hell. Now I cannot place the blame entirely on them, they were just doing what they were told. My father would use them to punish me. I slowly
began to develop a negative mindset to English. I often thought, "If I'm reading, I must be in trouble". Since I decided not to associate myself
with English, my grades started to slip. As my grades dropped, my father's reading assignments increased. I know he was only trying to help, but
it was the root to all my problems. As I entered third grade, my views on English had not changed. My elementary school noticed that there was
a decline in literacy so they created a system that would make kids want to read. If a student read twenty–five books, they would join the red
club. Fifty books earned them a spot in the blue club and seventy–five books earned them a spot in the yellow club. When you

Terminal Value And Instrumental Value Research Paper

  • 1. Terminal Value And Instrumental Value Research Paper Values are different for each person. While one person might value reputation, another might value inner harmony. In Chapter 5, values are defined as a collection of guiding principles that an individual consider to be morally right and desirable in life. Furthermore, values are rank in terms of how important the particular value is to an individual and how intense their feels are about that particular value. To illustrate, a person can value wealth and flexibility, but not at the same level. A person might lower their value toward flexibility a little in order to increase their potential for wealth. In addition, according to Milton Rokeach, we also organize values into two categories called terminal values and instrumental values. Terminal ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... My current goals of becoming a successful artist has been the issue of conflict in terms of finding balance for academic success and artist freedom. Since the age of eight or nine, I have always had a dream of becoming an artist and having my art work displayed in museums across the country. This goal started when my fourth grade teacher entered one of my watercolor painting into an art show for the Mobile County public schools art contest. Much to my surprise, I won second place for the entire fourth grade classes and the school body. This gave me the motivation to continue to develop my skills and interests in the arts. However, as I was starting college, the reality of finding time and balance to study for my coursework in radiology and devoting time for artistic leisure had become difficult to obtain. In fact, the intensity of my coursework for the radiology program denied me the chance to focus my time and attention on my artwork. Therefore, in terms of ranking my personal values, my goals for academic success surpassed my endeavors as an artist. Having focus on my value for success in my academics has led me to maintain my desired grade point average (gpa) and also has gave opportunities to a few honor societies, and achieve the qualifications in terms of gpa to apply for a variety of programs at different colleges and universities. Although I was pleased in meeting my terminal goal in my academics, I also felt dissatisfied that I often neglected one goal (art) for ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. College Is An Overwhelming Experience For Some People, And... College can be an overwhelming experience for some people, and for others not so much. If a student is armed with a powerful work ethic, and a will to succeed, college may seemingly be quiet straightforward. On the other hand, for the student who is not as fortunate to be equipped with those skills, the journey through college may not be as successful. This is one reason why the collegiate student athlete may tend to carry a higher grade point average than that of a non athlete. From a young age most athletes have been trained and disciplined to become the best they can be at their sport. Along with that training, most of them have developed a desire to outwork the competition, and be successful in everything that they do. This happens to fit right in with what it takes to be successful in academics as well. Not only are they equipped with a desire to succeed, they are also held accountable by the athletic department, coaches, and athletic association to maintain their good grades to keep eligibility. This is why there may be a chance that the collegiate student athlete may do better, on average, in the class room, than that of the non–student athlete. Becoming a student athlete at the college level means that the athlete has put many hours of hard work and dedication into their sport. They have been pushed to their limits by trainers and coaches to become the best they can be. However, being a student athlete not only requires a high level of skill on the field, or in ... • 7. My Personal Goals Dr. Martin Luther King Junior once stated, "I have a dream..." Each and every one of us can discover that we all have our own dream. Our dream can reflect our career, personal, and academic goals. When our dream can fulfill each one of these goals, we can define it as our purpose. My purpose can be very confusing, and contorts to certain situations. In the past week, I have thought about my true meaning in this world. I believe my purpose is to teach others and make a difference through influencing other's lives. My life's goal is to teach the uneducated especially pointed towards the little ones. I want to educate those from the ages of eight months to eight or nine years. Influencing people's lives can make the difference from a bleak world full of hatred and dismay to a world full of love and charity towards one another. I hope I can influence just enough of the right people to learn to accept others how they are presented to us. Personal goals of mine include teaching children, making a difference by influencing, and starting a family of my own. My academic goals for college include graduating with a Bachelor's Degree in Early Childhood Education. Also, I want to maintain a grade point average of three–point–seven or higher. The career in education can be quite vigorous and I owe it to my future students to attain the best, most competent education I can receive to be able to teach them well. • 9. Student Veterans And Traditional Students As the number of student veterans continues to increase within the university system, it is imperative to examine both the similarities and the differences between student veterans and traditional students (students without military experience), and what effect those differences may have on student veterans' ability to succeed. We surveyed thirty undergraduates at the University of Alaska Anchorage, assessing their grade point average, age, hours spent studying, and various other factors which we deemed our "criteria for success". In doing so, we believed that we would find a radical difference between the grade point average of student veterans compared to their traditional counterparts. The data collected suggests that our hypothesis was correct: student veterans were a letter grade behind their peers. This gap in achievement between the two groups suggests that student veterans' ability to adjust to life within the university system requires further examination. As more veterans continue to seek higher education, it is essential that those within the university system strive to understand, and alleviate some of the difficulties burdening this emerging demographic. • 11. Empiricism In Grendel In Grendel by John Gardner, twelve philosophies are connected to each one of the twelve chapters in the novel. These philosophies are all 'coats' that the main character, Grendel, "tries on" to see if he truly aligns and believes in the philosophy. Similarly, I, throughout my fifteen years of living, have "tried on" coats of philosophies and align specifically with parts of two philosophies present in Grendel: Empiricism and the philosophy of Nietzsche. Empiricism is the philosophy that professes all knowledge comes from sense experience, and the primary aspect of Nietzsche's philosophy is that tragedy is the affirmation of life. Ultimately, because of the experiences I have had in my life, I have developed into an Empiricist and believer ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I thought Ms. Platt had attached another student's rubric to my essay. I wanted the nightmare to end. Not only did I not receive an "A" or a "B," but a "C–." I earned a seventy percent. My eyes watered, and I began to feel nauseous. I felt as if I failed myself and my family. This grade was not supposed to be possible. In the words of Grendel, it was an accident. But unfortunately, it was not. At that moment, I had to accept, even if I did not want to, that I, for once, did not reach my high goals or had to surrender my unrealistic view of myself. I had erred, like all humans do, and learned that I was not perfect and that I could fail to reach my standards. At that moment, I realized that I wasn't superhuman but human, and this was something challenging for me to cope with at the time. However, in discovering my ability to fail, my perception of myself had been revolutionized. After that moment, I no longer saw myself as an intelligent kid who was unable to fail, but one who was and could be challenged by failure and challenged to learn from my mistakes. After revising the essay, I received an "A+," yet this was not what made me happy. The fact that I, the twelve–year–old boy who had previously rejected failure as a possibility, could accept failure (by my standards) and use it as ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 13. Athleticism Research Paper Athleticism: Are Grades Important To play or not to play that is the question. In school you have the choice to take part in a sport. To be able to participate is a different issue. To be able to participate in a sport you should also be able to maintain a suitable grade point average. So I believe that students should not be able to take part in sports if their grade point average does not meet the requirements. Believe it or not grades are crucial in school. For example, you could engage in a sport and not get the grades, although that could cheat you out of a scholarship. Not only do coaches look at how well you perform, yet they also look at your grades. Most coaches want a player that is well rounded and can be talented on the field ... • 15. Students vs. The System Essay Students vs. the System Education has always been a great factor in determining human survival and success. Whether it is learning to live in a harsh environment or learning to manage a company, education is and always will be incredibly significant. Education is so important in modern society that a system of grades has been developed to evaluate students of all ages and levels. In Paul Goodman's essay "A Proposal to Abolish Grading" he argues that the grading system that is commonly used in our society is ineffective and should be done away with. This idea is wrong since there are many positive outcomes that result from the current grading system. Goodman opens up his piece by making his claim that grades have take precedence over ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... "But if the aim is to discover weakness, what is the point of down–grading and punishing it, and thereby inviting the student to conceal his weakness, by faking and bulling, if not cheating?" (Goodman 208). Why is testing for weakness a bad thing? If a test is returned to a student and it is heavy with errors, it is the student's responsibility to correct the mistakes for the next test. Once a student has realized this, in Goodman's eyes, they have become self–aware. "If the student dares to accept himself as he is, a teacher's grade is a crude instrument compared with a student's self–awareness" (Goodman 208). Throughout the essay, there is a feeling that the author relays that all students are looking to only get by in school, but in real life, that is certainly not the case. As a matter of fact, very many students in high schools are very determined to achieve their goals, so they work hard and learn to attain them, rather than taking an easy route to a good grade. Getting high letter grades is a powerful motivation for students who know what they want. For those with competitive spirits, high grades can be used to measure one's own ranking to the rest of the class. For other students, it could be a reward saying "excellent work" as opposed "you passed." As stated earlier, there are many students who are actually hard workers. However, there may not really be a flaw in the system of grades that schools have implemented. It ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 17. The No Child Left Behind ( Nclb ) Act Launching America 's... In 2001, President George W. Bush signed the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act launching America's education system into an era of standardized testing as a method of holding states and schools accountable for student achievement. With this recent surge of high–stakes standardized testing, teachers are held to increasingly higher expectations of quality instruction and meeting these standards. However, schools are unprepared in achieving the goals of NCLB resulting in years of struggle to improve student success in testing due to flaws in the traditional grading system. Current schools and teachers lack proper grading practices that are inadequate of accurately representing student achievement. With the increased focus on standards, it is imperative that schools begin to implement an effective grading system so that all students and parents are provided accurate feedback of students' abilities. There are myriad unforeseen consequences when schools use the traditional grading system. For the past century, traditional grading practices and policies that have contributed to much of the failure of student achievement. The use of the traditional grading system has slowly led to the major issue of grade inflation. Most often students' grade tend to be inflated with the help of non–academic factors such as homework, participation and student effort. • 23. Strengths And Weaknesses Of Writing Chapter ten is all about, as a teacher, being able to assess the writing skill of students and knowing different ways to keep the students interested. Along with talking about the underlying issues when it comes to the different ways writing is taught and evaluating the skills of writing students. For me, growing up I can't tell you how much I disliked having to write papers in high school because we would talk a little about what the teacher wanted and then we were set to do it on our own, then given a grade and that was it. I always wanted more feedback than what I got so with the next writing assignment I could do better than the previous. After reading this chapter three main content areas that stuck out to me were; what do grades mean, objectivity in assessment, and how to make assessments reliable. What do grades mean? It seems that many people have a different idea of what a letter grade or percent means, to some it is just one thing that doesn't define them to others it is everything they work for. For any teacher it is important they have a set standard for what they will be graded on with each assignment. Grades are particularly important once they get into higher education. One fact listed in the book is, "a high school student who receives A's on their paper, will finish their first year of college with a C is freshman comp." One of the biggest misconception about what teachers as looking for with writing they are looking for the writing ability of the students. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The definition of electronic device is "an object that is controlled by a computerized system" ("Merriam–Webster.com", 2015). In the society that we live in today electronics are becoming a necessity in school and sometimes in the work environment. This raises the question of why are we becoming dependent upon electronics, when they may end up hurting us academically. Students who spend more time on electronic devices may spend less on homework or other assignments that require more attention and thought out responses. Schools are starting to make a lot of assignments due through email and or a school sponsored website (ex. blackboard). There are ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... With this being said, it is important to have valid information on this particular topic because if it is not affecting students in a positive way then it should not be continued. 1. Background/Review of the Literature: This is a very popular study that has been done over the last few years because of the rise in electronic use in the education system. One study was done by a group of people sponsored by Liberty University (Rockinson–Szapkiw, Courduff, Carter, & Bennett (2013)). These group of students took a sample size of 538 university students and examined the relationships between textbook format, grades, and perceived learning scores. The results found were that students who used e–textbooks had higher levels of affective and psychomotor learning, but there were no notable differences in cognitive learning nor did final grades suggests that e–textbooks may have an effect in their learning. Another study looked at the relationship between academic performance and the use of computer technology. This was conducted by three students at Washburn University (Drain, Grier, and Sun (2012)). The three researchers concluded that an increase in computer usage was correlated with improvements in academic performance overall. Based on ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 27. The Controversy Of Evaluating Letter Grades There has been a lot of debate about the way schools should be evaluating their students. Some say that letter grades measure different levels of performance in school subjects and that letter grades also motivate most students to do well. Others argue that the letter grade system is affecting the students' learning progress and their engagement; therefore, affecting those students in a negative way. There are more appropriate ways to evaluate young students than to grade them. Trials have been done in many schools throughout Canada where students are being assessed through summaries. These summaries vary from letter grades since they provide information on the specific areas of struggle the student may be facing and the opportunity for discussion ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Students today spend the majority of their weekdays at schools which can result in stress due to many factors. It is important for students to learn to cope with pressure because it is an important skill for overall health. Grades can cause stress and anxiety in many ways. For example, a student that is receiving "bad" grades can have stress because they feel pressured by the teachers or parents to get better grades, and the student may feel that their peers are judging them because of their grades. On the other hand, a student who is receiving "good" grades may feel stress due to the pressure of maintaining their grades for the sake of their peer's judgement and parent's expectations. Sources of stress in schools include: Teacher Interactions, Academic Stress, Peer Interactions, and Academic Self–Concept (Helms and Gable 6). The manifestation of stress results in emotional, behavioral, or psychological distress (Helms and Gable 6). Grades are a factor in all of the sources mentioned, the student may feel the teacher disapproves of them, their peers don't respect them, and their self–esteem will be impacted because of poor grades. This can result in behaviour and emotional issues which further the student's insecurities and can cause psychological problems in the long term. Letter or percentage grades say nothing about these issues, it is very difficult to spot stress in children and the resulting behaviour due to stress can be misinterpreted if the parents and teachers are not made aware. Summary assessments can help detect stress in students, where the student can explain how they are feeling and the teachers and parents can detect high levels of stress. Test anxiety is another manifestation of stress in students today; unfortunately, many schools and teachers face a huge responsibility in which the students must perform well in order for teachers to keep their jobs and for schools to ... • 29. Causes And Effects Of Stress On Teenagers HEY! Are you a teenager, or interested in the subject of stress for teenagers??? Then this is the paper for you! In this paper I, a teenager, talk about the causes and effects of stress for teenagers! Or, at least the causes of stress in my life that others agree with! Though the effects will be generalized. Adults often forget about the stress they felt as teenagers, or don't understand their stress as times have been changing. For that reason there is often MORE stress in a teen's life. This paper is for everyone, especially those adults, to learn about the stress put on the younger generation(s). OUR FIRST TOPIC ISSSSSSS: Big presentations. Most adults don't understand why we feel so pressured when we have to do presentations, well that's why this paper is being created. In this day and age, adults don't get the stress that us teenagers go through nowadays, because the times change and what was stressful then, may not even be stressful now. For some people it's because their voices are changing, others don't like the feeling of everyone's eyes on them. "They're probably watching every move I make and silently judging me" is what I think a lot of teenagers think or feel during a presentation. I hate being in the spotlight, so I hate having everyone's eyes on me. I'd be invisible if I could be. During this time in our lives, our anxiety is at its current fullest, so of course we'd be nervous showing off something we did, to people who can judge us so easily. Once a ... • 31. Grading Is A Standardized System GRADE CALCULATOR Grading is a standardized system in an area, region, town or country that is used to rank school going children depending on their efforts and results at school. The grading system can be expressed in four primary ways. It can either be in terms of letters whereby different letters represent one's performance and these letters are assigned numeric values. For example, the best letter grade is an A with a numeric value of 4 while the worst grade is F with a numeric value of 0. It can also be represented in terms of a percentage of all the rightly answered questions in a test; for example a score of 60% in mathematics. It can also be expressed as a value out of the total; for example scoring 7/10 in an English continuous assessment test or it can be expressed as a range; for example 1 to 6. All the above are ways for ranking students but at the end of the day, every school has its own preference. The fact that schools use different grading systems, it also poses some difficulties in the education systems because of the fact that grades keep inflating. This means that the works that would have received lower grades in the past are now being awarded with higher grades. Grades inflation causes problems like: It makes it nearly impossible to compare students who did their exams at different time intervals. This is primarily because as at the moment, higher grades are being awarded for the same work. The grades are not uniform among the various disciplines that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Some people doubt homework's effectiveness, but teachers and researchers agree homework is essential. Homework helps students get better grades in school. Some people don't know exactly what homework is. Homework is defined as an out of class activity assigned to students as an extension or elaboration of classroom work(KidSource). Though studies examining the relationship between homework and school achievement have been inclusive(ERIC). Still many teachers and researchers still agree that homework helps students achieve higher grades in school. Schools that assigned homework frequently showed higher student achievement than schools that assigned little homework(ERIC). This means that homework is working. Studies have generally found that if teachers carefully plan homework, homework can be quite helpful(KidSource). Homework has proven its effectiveness and is a very powerful factor in student performance. Students should only spend enough time on homework so that the subject is reinforced and not just a waste of time. The national PTA suggest that from K–3 grades there should be no more than 20 minutes a day, for 4–6 grades there should be 20–40 minutes of homework, and from 7– 12 grades time varies do to types of subjects and number of subjects taken(KidSource). Anymore than these recommended amount of times is seen excessive by the national PTA. Surprisingly U.S. students are working as hard as Asians: 24% of eighth graders do more then two hour of homework compared to Japans 28% and Germanys 17%(Brimelow108). In order to establish a well–rounded answer, I will make sure students are selected from different classrooms and different teachers. • 39. How The School Is Through A Letter Grading System Childhood is filled with many things. It is a time of uncharted growth and learning. Experiences that form who we are going to become. It is when we discover our likes and dislikes free of major consequence. Children learn rapidly and willingly. They learn to walk and talk on their own, and sometimes they learn more than one language. They are curious and constantly wanting to learn in the early years. People understand this and want to give them more as well as prepare them the world they will face as adults. Then why do we burden them with grades? Soon they are off to school. School comes along with lots of new experiences, some good, others bad. Among those things there are a few that are arguably unneeded. Grades are slowly making their way to the top of the list. The way we currently measure success in school is through a letter grading system. A is great, B not so much, C and D unacceptable, and F? Forget about it! (Ellis) This is the way we have been grading middle and elementary schools since the late nineteenth century after it had been tested throughout colleges and high schools beginning in the year 1756. A standardized grading option was needed to keep the growing number of schools on track with each other. (Lassahn) Just because this is the only way we have found to measure the growth of children for the past two hundred or so years. That by no means proves it is the best way. The stress and burden it puts on the children outweighs the purpose of grading. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 43. Essay on Ability Grouping Ability grouping is a widely spread practice used among many educators today. Between–class grouping is by far one of the most commonly used types of ability grouping. "The goal of this grouping is for each class to be made up of students who are homogeneous in standardized intelligence or achievement test scores" (Snowman, Biehler). In this type of grouping, the schools separate their students into different classes or courses. "Between–class ability grouping is where students spend most of the day in ability groups and use the same or similar curriculum substantially adjusted to their ability levels" (Ability Grouping 3). "For example, in elementary schools, students from the same grade levels may be grouped by ability for reading and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This impacts their achievement level and in turn affects their self–esteem. Such consequences cause the students to lose interest in school, and in the long run, many of these students begin to drop out. Although there are certain benefits to between–class ability grouping, they are outweighed by the negative effects this type of grouping can produce. Ultimately, the focus should not be on how to label students, but rather, on the quality of the education the students can receive while working with peers in specific subject areas. Regrouping is another type of ability grouping. Students of the same age, ability and grade, but from different classrooms, are brought together for a specific subject such as reading or math. According to their goals, activities, and individual needs, the students are grouped and then regrouped again. There are two common regrouping strategies: teacher–led groups and student–led groups. Teacher–led groups are effective in introducing material, summing up the conclusion made by the groups, and meeting the common needs of the groups. These groups typically include whole class, small group, and individual instruction. Whole class instruction allows the teacher to introduce new material to the entire class. It also allows students to use their prior knowledge to form new acquisitions. "Small groups can provide opportunities for working with students who have common needs, such as reinforcement or enrichment" (Valentino, 2000, 1). Individual ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Traditional Grading System Standards–based grading seems to be extremely popular in education with more and more schools beginning to use it because it is able to allow students to" look forward with their grades create a more accurate display of progress. This is so wrong for a multitude of reasons. Switching to this flawed system would create far more problems than it would solve because SBG is inferior to traditional grades, SBG is much more disorganized than the current "traditional" grading system, and SBG is unnoticed by colleges. In contrast, traditional grading has a clear template laid out to grade with. • 47. Academic Decorum Explained : Academic Decorum In The... Academic Decorum Academic Decorum Explained: When students walk into a classroom there is a certain expectation they must uphold. Typically students will walk in the classroom, sit in their assigned seats, find out what is required of them that day, and do the work expected of them. In the simplest terms, this is academic decorum. Academic decorum is about how the student and the teacher fulfills their respective roles. According to academic decorum, the role of the student is to be willing to learn and willing to follow the rules the teacher puts in place. Under academic decorum a good student will do what they see fit to be the best possible learner they could be. The teacher's role according to academic decorum is to ensure that their students are learning and progressing at an efficient rate. The teacher has the right to have students adhere to whatever rules they see fit, but when putting academic decorum into the equation, the teacher must change some rules and procedures according to the needs of the class within reason. In short, academic decorum is put in place so students can be better and teachers can teach them in a way that fits their (the student's) needs. • 51. (Flannery) Paying students for good grades is a topic that has been talked about over a span of multiple years. Should students be paid for good test scores, doing homework, and completing assignments on time? Students should not be paid for the grades they get at school because when rewards are given the student loses the interest in learning itself and focuses solely on the reward, a student's character growth can be a better motivator than money, and at a young age children don't understand the use of the money they would earn for the grades they received which can highly ineffective. When a student thinks about the rewards he can get from good grades instead of growing as a person can negatively affect them later in life. " For example, personal growth is one of the main benefits of learning in a classroom with fellow students, which should be payment enough for children (Breed). As shown by the example, when a student can grow as an individual when completing school work should be a better reward than money for the student. Furthermore, an example is shown in Matt Breed's article when he states, "Some "jobs" serve not as money making opportunities, but as character and experience builders." This is a great example because it shows that personal growth is more important than money for an internship or volunteer work in the real–world just like in school when someone would get money for good grades. To summarize, when someone is to give money for grades they are missing the most important thing for the student which is personal growth in themselves which can lead to far better rewards than money will. Finally, money for grades should not be given because children at a young age don't fully understand the importance of money. Where All Grades Are Above Average By Stuart Rojstaczer Essay In the article, "Where All Grades Are Above Average" written by Stuart Rojstaczer, he discusses how college grades are becoming increasingly higher and gives several possible reasons for the practice known as grade inflation. As a professor at Duke and Stanford Universities, Rojstaczer details his personal experiences with grade inflation as well as a brief history of the topic. Although, he believes that grade inflation is wrong he chooses to participate in the practice because he says giving some students the low grades that they deserve reflects poorly on him as a teacher. In addition, he believes that changing attitudes are leading people to view education as more of a business/consumer relationship and away from the more traditional view of a student/teacher relationship. Rojstaczer's argument is weak because while he believes that giving students the grades they actually earn reflects poorly on him, choosing to participate in the unethical practice of grade inflation is a major blow to his reputation. To support his claim that grade inflation is really happening, Rojstaczer states that the letter grades students are receiving today has changed drastically from the grades students earned a few decades ago. For instance, a C that was given 25% of the time in the 1960's constitutes only 10% of all grades given today to college students at Duke University and 4% of the grades given at Pomona College. There are many things students do not like about school. One thing students do not like is testing, especially standardized testing. I believe college is a time where we find our identity, maybe we have an idea on what it is going to be and sometimes it takes us many years to figure it out. In Daniel Marks experience his identity is going to take awhile for him to find if he doesn 't change his ways. Daniels "before" was very rough, he was in trouble a lot. She was hoping her parents finally gave in and they were going to tell her they were going on a trip to France, but that was a long shot. "We thought we told you... about your father's new job... in Sweden." "Sweden!?!?!" Arden was so shocked she just stood there. She thought of the time they visited Sweden about a year ago. She planned to just take a nap to take her mind off of it, and that's when her mom came in and told her that they were leaving tomorrow morning. She woke up the next day and got ready. Arden was definitely the kind of girl that traveled in style, because she didn't want a new country to see her in what she wears daily. She curled her long dark brunette hair and wore her favorite outfit; her dark red lace ¾ length sleeved shirt, her favorite grey scarf, her ankle boots and her nicest pair of skinny jeans. She felt ready for the trip, and hopefully the feeling would stretch for more than one day. Arden is a pretty girl; she is so pretty she could wear a poncho and still look amazing, but that wasn't Arden's goal in life, it was to be known for more than how she looks. She wanted people to see her in the way she is drawn to others, with intelligence and confidence. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 71. Reflecting on English Class 111 Essay Reflecting on English 111 My experience into English 111 not only left me anxious, it became a self–revelation. My learning capabilities were challenged because writing did not come natural and the possibility of becoming a prominent writer were going to take a lot of time, effort and hard work. In spite of not knowing what to expect, I entered into this new semester pumped up carrying an "I can do this" attitude and feeling confident. Oh boy was I scared into complete and utter silence on my first encounter with my new instructor. The demands on us, as a student, seemed to be exceedingly high leaving no room for mistakes. On the contrary, being that this was all pretty much new for me, I began to panic. Meanwhile as I tried to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Then I began writing like never before, so to get an understanding on the inside of me that I too could do this. Attend college at my age and learn to write. I have to admit that when I received a grade of B, on my paper; I was thrilled not to mention exhausted. Needless to say, I was not looking forward to writing any more essays because there was so much work involved in receiving a passing grade. Then all of a sudden I was faced with the next English 111 assignment, which definitely was not going to be any easier. As in my promise to myself, I remained faithful not only to the commitment of college but to the fact that I still believe I was worth every effort that it was going to take to receive a passing grade of confidence which I so desired. After our first essay, we immediately began our second, "oh my God", were my exact words that I remembered myself saying, as I took a deep breathe. In fact, during all of this mind boggling confusion going on in my head, I felt that this next essay was going to be more complicated. Which immediately lead me to recall "What is Academic Writing Myth #4" when Irvin suggested that "Some got it; I don't – the genius fallacy" (5). Myth #4 suggests that when we begin to think of our writing flaws, we tend to blame genetics. We offer up explanations that it's out of our control, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 73. Reflection About English The year is 2005. The room is calm and silent, but my heart is a symphony. I am glued to a chair and not by choice. A black and white puddle surrounds me. The symphony gets louder as the minutes go by. The smell of ink fills the air as I am submerged in papers. I begin to drown in a sea of words I cannot comprehend. It would be years before I would learn to swim. Prior to entering third grade, I was a victim of bullying. Although these bullies were different from the norm. They did not kick me or call me names. They did not leave any physical scars, except for a paper cut or two. Reading and writing were my bullies and they made my life a living hell. Now I cannot place the blame entirely on them, they were just doing what they were told. My father would use them to punish me. I slowly began to develop a negative mindset to English. I often thought, "If I'm reading, I must be in trouble". Since I decided not to associate myself with English, my grades started to slip. As my grades dropped, my father's reading assignments increased. I know he was only trying to help, but it was the root to all my problems. As I entered third grade, my views on English had not changed. My elementary school noticed that there was a decline in literacy so they created a system that would make kids want to read. If a student read twenty–five books, they would join the red club. Fifty books earned them a spot in the blue club and seventy–five books earned them a spot in the yellow club. When you ... • 75. Age-Grade Speech Actions The idea of time, whether it be for over a period, such as 60 hours, or during a season, summer or fall, does not appear to be particularly significant when trying to address the discursive patterns of practicing teachers. Whether this is relevant to teachers using what is an accepted way to describe students' mathematical performance, or just being unaware of their talk, spending more time in professional development did not seem to be an answer. This is by no means to imply that the work of the research team was not meaningful or beneficial. Some progress was definitely made as we saw age–grade speech actions decrease as trajectory marker speech actions increase. Nevertheless, this still leaves me to wonder what would make a significant ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
