4. INTRODUCTION: COVID-19
A Corona virus is a kind of common virus that
causes an infection in your nose, sinuses, or
upper throat. Most Corona viruses aren't
dangerous.
In early 2020, after a December 2019 outbreak in
China, the World Health Organization identified
SARS-CoV-2 as a new type of Corona virus. The
outbreak quickly spread around the world.

5. SARS-CoV-2 is one of seven types of corona virus, including the ones that cause severe
diseases like Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS) and sudden acute respiratory
syndrome (SARS). The other corona viruses cause most of the colds that affect us
during the year but arenāt a serious threat for otherwise healthy people.

6. HISTORY OF COVID-19
The name corona virus was coined in 1968
from latin word ācoronaā meaning CROWN like.
ā¢ The outbreak was first identified in Wuhan,
China, in December 2019. When a pneumonia
cluster of unknown cause was observed. ā¢ The
WHO declared the outbreak a Public Health
Emergency of International Concern on 30
January, 2020 & Pandemic on 11 March, 2020.

7. By the end of Jan, virus found to be originated from bats
& come to the conclusion that this virus also belongs to
the group that caused SARS, so was named SARS CoV-
On Feb 11th 2020 WHO names the virus COVID-19
(Coronavirus disease 19). In India first case was
reported from Thrissur, Kerala in the month of Jan, 2020.

8. Incubation period for novel coronavirus is b/w 2 to 14
days. Some infected people have no symptom. ā¢ As
at April, estimated asymptomatic ratio range widely
from 5% to 80%. ā¢ Reproductive ratio of this virus and
degree of spread ability. It means that one person
can spread infection to about 3 persons. ā¢ Novel
corona virus ā incubation period ā is b/w 2 to 14
days even up to 28 days in some persons after
exposure, but recently in Japan by mid march they
have found it takes 14- 27 days for the symptoms to
appear. Mortality rate- 1-3%

10. Mode of transmission
Person to person through:
ā¢ Droplet transmission: droplet of infected
fluid from the nose and mouth of infected
person lands on objects and surfaces when
the person cough or talk.
ā¢ People touch contaminated surfaces or
objects and then touch eyes or mouth
ā¢ Transmission can take place through
physical contact with the infected person

11. ā¢ RT āPCR ( Real- time reverse transcription polymerase chain
reaction) of Respiratory Tissue samples - in early phase of illness.
(Nasopharyngeal swab / oropharyngeal swab)
ā¢ Rapid Diagnostic Tests(RDT) ā result in 10 to 30 minutes ,
sensitivityā 90% specificity ā 95% , tests IgG / IgM antibodies.
ā¢ ELISA / IFAT ā Immunofluoresence Antibody Tests ā antibodies
detectable within one month.
ā¢ (Enzyme linked immunosorbent Assay) ā 1-5 hrs
