Symptom Solving
This is a reactive approach that focuses on addressing the visible
symptoms or immediate problems that present themselves. In the context
of the wastewater industry, a symptom might be a specific issue like pipe
blockages or equipment failure. Symptom solving would involve directly
addressing that issue, such as unclogging the pipe or repairing the
equipment. While symptom solving can quickly address immediate issues
and bring the system back to working condition, it often overlooks the root
causes of the problems. The same issues might repeatedly occur if
underlying causes are not addressed.
Symptom Solving:
Symptom solving and holistic problem solving are
two different approaches to tackling issues, not just
in the wastewater industry, but in any field.

One Water
This is a more proactive and comprehensive approach,
aiming to understand and address the underlying causes of
problems. In this method, the entire system is considered,
including the interrelations and dependencies among its
various components.
Applying this approach to the wastewater industry, a
holistic problem solver wouldn't just fix the immediate
problem (like the blocked pipe). They would look at
the broader system to understand why the blockage
occurred in the first place.
• Is there an issue with waste disposal practices
upstream?
• Is there a design flaw in the wastewater treatment
facility?
• Is the pipe material prone to damage or blockages?
